    Re: Nate Wolters

Maybe we should wonder why Nate Wolters would want to come to SDSU...instead of why SDSU might want Nate Wolters.

Thank you! This should end all the things about who offered who.

There is talk that Cal-Poly and other DI Schools offered him. Is there a chance that he turned them down because they are too far away? That could be why they aren't recruiting him anymore.
Some players want to stay home, some want to get as far away home as possible, some want to go DI(for travel or to play at the highest level), some want to be an instant starter, some want to be a "big fish in a little pond", some want to play with friends, etc... My point is we have no idea who he turned down and what his reasons are for who he has left on his list.

I don't really agree about the recruiting over the last few years. I guess you are right if you count the players that left as misses. One broke the freshman scoring record and 2 of them played at Illinois and Kansas State. The problem is that those players didn't end their careers here. I think it looks like now that transition is over, we won't lose players like that anymore.

Next year we lose Mack and Wipf.
We have Fiegen, White and Wolters(maybe) coming in. I think at least 2 of the players coming in will help the team. I know that Cassaday has been injured both years and Davis isn't off to a good start but I'm hoping 1 or both of them will help some time soon. I'm not giving up on Cassaday and Davis for this year(yet) but that would be 5 players added to next years team. I don't know who we're adding the year after that but that's when Kai and Garrett will finally be gone.

I'm not saying our team is great or anything like that but it should be able to be 7th or 8th in the Summit this year and around 4th or so next. Kai and Garrett sticking around 4 years will help this team with players coming and staying. That is something that hasn't happened since our last year of DII.

        Re: Nate Wolters

For what it's worth, I attended a "Full Court Club" luncheon for UWMilwaukee basketball yesterday with my boss who is a member/booster. The luncheon was for all the big boosters to get an opportunity to ask Coach Jeter some questions, each lunch and be asked to give more money. UWM was the hottest mid-major team out there a couple years ago. Now they're struggling and people are grumbling about the recruiting they've done in the last 3 years. They are really grumbling about this year's recruits. If not for a couple of transfers, their recruiting class is pretty weak. And they have Chicago and Milwaukee to draw from.

...I still think anytime the choice is down to _____ DII school and SDSU, it should never be a choice. Then again, kids choose colleges based on a number of factors. Not all want to go D1 just for the sake of going D1.

It's only fitting that on this day I write post full of waffling statements.

What does it say about our DI program that a recruit doesn't want to choose a DI scholarship opportunity when it is the only one available? I know what I think it means. If the excuse is that he wants to stay close to home, accept the St. Cloud offer and be done with it.

I really hope Nate won't pick SDSU just because they're D1. Im very impressed that he isn't taking the Division I offer and is mulling his choices for his acedemic and playing future. I caught an offer from New Mexico a long time ago and took it right away because it was the biggest D1 team offerin me. I hated it. Quit basketball after 2 years, didnt even transfer. I could have gone to William and Mary(my little brother ended up choosin them and loved it) out of high school... wish I would've taken that choice, but New Mexico was bigger and better and I thought thats what I wanted.

I guess I just talk about the "elephant in the room" that has been hinted at in several posts and let every really discuss it. Has the men's program gotten the reputation as a "loser" program?

My thoughts is that we are close to having the reputation as a bad program. I don't think anybody looks back to our success at D2 in relation to support or recruiting. We do not have any transition tag anymore, we are viewed as D1 program and have had serious losing years in succession. At this point, talking about why people have left sounds like excuses. It is unfortunate, but about the only reputation gets changed is by changing the coaches. I know many people have said that Coach Nagy has this year and next to right the ship. But think about any other coaches you have heard about that had two years left on a contract (I know we only have one year contracts), VERY few get to the last year of the deal. Either an extension is signed or the coach is fired. I truly, truly hope that Coach Nagy will be at SDSU for another 15 years.

SDSU coaching staff has ended their pursuit of Nate Wolters and are moving on....he will not be in an SDSU uniform during his collegiate career.

Am I correct in assuming Nate told the staff to move on?

Probably not. My guess is SDSU can't wait around and was looking at someone else just in case Nate didn't accept.

Nope SDSU staff cut ties....nothing to do with verbal from Carlson as the verbal came last night a day after staff moved forward. I believe it was quite tiresome to wait around for a commitment from an athlete that had no other offers from schools at the same level. Scholarship might go to athlete on board already or be held for future use. All depends on development at the PG position of athletes currently on roster.

Would it be safe to say they could still land a 2009 kid this year as well? While most basketball recruits sign early, it's possible there will be some out there that we could get to committ before the signing period in April.

EDIT: From Terry's Tuesday Blog Post

Landing Brookings guard Brayden Carlson does not change the recruiting situation for the SDSU men's basketball team. The Jacks are still looking to add one scholarship player in this recruiting class, and that could still happen in the early signing period - which starts Wednesday - or in the spring.

I saw a reference to this message board on Minnesota Preps, so thought I would pass along the following post that I put on Minnesota Preps this morning.

                            *************************

Just a couple of things regarding my son, Nate Wolters.

First, the earlier posting about Nate having narrowed his choices to two colleges was not true.

Also, it is true that Nate will not be going to South Dakota State. Basically, SDSU wanted Nate to sign early, but we had some concerns that could not be addressed until after the basketball season. SDSU was aware of our concerns, but continued to push for Nate to sign early and even sent the National Letter of Intent to him last week. Finally, this past weekend, it became clear that there was no reason to continue the recruiting process with them. As far as we were concerned, it ended Saturday evening with an email to the SDSU coach.

                            Roger Wolters

                            *************************

It looks like SDSU is going to sign a very good player from Brookings. Best of luck to Brayden. Nate's AAU team played the Schoolers two times this past spring. They were a great team. I don't remember Brayden specifically, but I'm sure he must be a quality player.

It's very important that a high schooler picks a college for the right reasons for him. I don't care if there an athlete or not.
Good luck to Nate in the rest of the process. I for one hope he finds what he is looking for.

If Nate was not certain that SDSU was the right place then he shouldn't be expected to choose. I understand why our coaches wanted a commitment and I respect that Nate was not able to sign the dotted line. Best of luck to both sides as they move forward.
