The team I saw play last night won't beat any DI teams. That doesn't mean we won't win any DI games, it just means the effort last night was not good enough to win at the DI level. We need to find some consistency and I hope that comes with time.

Cadwell is trying to carry this team on his own. He is one heck of a good player but he is not able to do that. His jumpshot just isn't quite there. Without Casey going nuts we wouldn't have stayed in the game last night.

The lack of urgency, effort and intensity in the 2nd half was very discouraging. Even Nagy noted that. With about 8 minutes to play in the first half Idaho was waiting for us to put them away and we couldn't/didn't want to do it.

It comes down to a lack of real game experience both for the individual players on the team and more importantly the team as a whole. There is never, I mean never, a time when all 5 players on the court have played together in a previous year. This becomes apparent when you watch this team under pressure. They just don't know how to respond......yet.

I'm worried about this year, but thats my problem. This team has to keep playing the games and dealing with whatever result comes. I keep reminding myself to be patient.

Nice student and GA crowd. The reserved seats were maybe 1/2 to 2/3 full. Gotta give it up for the students that attended. Sound system wasn't quite right. Couldn't hear the school song on the GA side. The rabbit was great, my girls loved him. Looking forward to a return trip.

One of the things/mistakes we kept doing/making was to foul jump shooters. Although I think the Idaho players should receive academy award nominations for falling down every time we touched them/breathed on them as they came down on their shot. As people have stated too many missed FT's and also too many missed opportunities around the basket. We didn't rebound near as well in the second half as we did in the first.

Other than that it wasn't real pretty. Frias had a trainwreck but has been showing some promise as of late. Kai was very quiet. Did Kleinjan even play? Not good when a senior essentially plays the whole game and gets the bagel in the point column. I keep waiting for him to step up!

The offense was changed this week. To me, this would explain Cadwell's improved scoring, as well the poor play of Kai, Bassett, Kleinjan and Frias. State basically ran 3-4 different set plays the entire game to get shots for Cadwell with an occasional back door to Loney. Unfortunately it resulted in the other players standing around a lot.

I have a hard time believing Kleinjan scored 20 ppg at the BCA while standing in the corner all night like he did last night. Is he doing that because of a change in game plan, change in attitude, both, or what?

That's why I asked this question.

Why practice an offense for the entire preseason only to change it after 3 games? Especially when we have a young team that doesn't even get the stuff they've been practicing for a month?

I'm not mad at this point, please don't read into my posts too much, I'm just a little confused and frustrated. There will probably be more confusion and frustration before this season is over. I really wish I could have heard the post game, maybe that would have cleared things up a bit.

I'm not particularly worried about this year, mainly because I'm resigned to the fact that the W-L record is going to be utterly unacceptable for an SDSU basketball team. That's a given. No sense in beating ourselves up about it--we just take that as the starting point of the discussion and move forward.

What I'm interested in is how soon and how well the youngsters figure out what they need to do, and what they can't do, on a D-I basketball court.

There's a lot of figuring out yet to do, as evidenced by last night. This may be the mother of all rebuilding years.

But there are occasional signs of hope, balanced by jaw-grinding frustration. As JackMD notes, Casey's performance last night kept us in the game. Our front line play is a mess right now. I thought Bassett and Engen both showed occasional glimpses but Williams simply disappeared. Loney was steady as usual, but he needs more help from the rest of the front line (the other front-liners went 7-17 from the field, Loney was 5-7).

Cadwell is still struggling with his shot this year (4-7 free throws and fouling out?!?), but still managed to score 20 points (mainly because he, Casey, and Loney seemed to be the only guys really willing to put up shots). I think moving him to the off-guard will pay off down the line, even if you have to live with Jose Frias spelling Casey for short periods at the 1 guard spot until Callahan can play.

The Jackrabbits need to worry about winning possessions, not winning games, until they get their feet underneath them--Nagy said something similar last night, but not in those words.

If the guys start winning some possessions, the games will eventually come. It's gonna be a hard road, though.

So, stay positive, and stay together, Rabbits, loosen up a bit and have some fun watching these guys grow as a team! It WILL get better!

Nearly exactly as I see things. I am having such a hard time accepting the struggles that have come with the move to DI. I know for a fact that the DII teams Nagy coached at SDSU would have put a hurting on Idaho last night, I am 100% confident of that.

I expected to be impressed by the play of the freshman and last night I didn't see that, in fact, I felt the opposite. That my friend is why I am worried. That said, freshmen will be inconsistent and my hope is that last night was just a bad night amongst a bunch of good nights to come.

Its funny, I don't worry about much but when it comes to Jackrabbit athletics and SDSU I have this passion that prevents me from always remaining rational. I suppose its a character flaw, oh well. I love SDSU and SDSU basketball in particular.

Your best bets to end that little problem are to get to Brookings and cheer the ladies on in their game with USC, head to Skinner's downtown to celebrate  [smiley=beer.gif], and then head to Fargo tomorrow and cheer the football team on in there bid to win the GWFC title!

Then make copies of the articles and plaster them everywhere.  While your at it, wish the Augie people well in D-II mediocrity in the NSIC and the USD people well in there upcoming struggles in D-I!

By the way, Crow is a dish best served cold!



The Jacks will has had the last laugh and will continue to do so over our in-state brothers!

Don't be afraid to remind them of the Nagy DII era.  Plenty of wins over USD and Augie in there. Lots of playoff appearances. The Augie guys might want to shut-up quickly. If not, remember you're not a yote or a doggie and thats good for you.

I have complete faith in Nagy and am just waiting for it to happen. In the meantime, makes lots of copies, too, of the story about SDSU's women beating the USC Women of Troy. USC has never heard of Augustana (okay, perhaps the one in the Quad Cities) and they think USD is in San Diego. They're fully aware of the SDSU Jackrabbits and the Frost Arena crowd.

That same crowd you saw in Frost Arena tonight vs. Southern Cal is waiting to be unleashed on the men's side, too.

If the team gives the crowd something to work with, the crowd will give it back to the team.

Just remind your Coyote buddies how both schools have beaten USC this week but that their win was against U of South Carolin at Aiken and ours was against THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA who was ranked #19 in D-1!!!!!
