74-66 We had a chance to win this. Tonite our free throws and lack of leadership is killed us(amongst other things). Only 61% from the line for us tonite. We seem to be getting better though. Good to see Casey doing well.

2124 in attendence student section looked full. The result wasn't pretty as it looked like the guys started to give up a little in the 2nd half after Idaho's 3 point percentage sky rocketed. Thomas and Kai had off games as Casey and Cadwell shined. Now it's time to get pumped for tomorrow.

I thought Loney, Yackley, and Engen played decent also. Credit Idaho's defense. They took Kai, Andy, and Jose completely out of their game. This was a game that we probably should have won, but let it slip away.
We should have won this game. I think our raw talent is equal or superior to Idaho's, but we were unable to play the kind of team game that would have blown the Vandals completely out of Frost Arena. (Geez, I probably sound like Nagy!)
Our outside game could not compensate for the failure of our inside game to score consistently or get the rebounds from our own or Idaho's missed shots. Loney got away for a few lay-ups in the second half, but for the most part we were pushed around pretty severely by Idaho's inside game. Our inside guys need to get better at putting butts on their men and getting position for rebounds. Just generally, Idaho looked like they wanted the rebounds more than the Jackrabbits did.
Once again we were hurt badly by a couple of three-point shooters getting hot from the outside.
Jose Frias needs to stop turning the ball over, and stop visibly complaining to his teammates when he's benched for turning the ball over. It's as simple as that. You need to be a senior leader on this team, Jose, not a senior whiner.
The good:
Mackenzie Casey, if he played consistently like he did tonight, would give Callahan a run for the starting point position, IMHO. He was effective both offensively and defensively. He's a junior, he needs to give this team solid minutes like tonight, even when Callahan comes back, because you don't want your point guard to play all 40 minutes. Casey staked a claim tonight to be the main relief point guard when Callahan comes back--I hope he can keep his level of play up and consistent and gain Nagy's trust.
Loney knew what he was doing on the inside, getting good position for his layups in the second half. Bassett is a horse, and just needs some additional seasoning and coaching to be a real force inside.
Engen really needs to figure out how to put on at least 20 more pounds. He's got a nice outside shot, but that's a waste of his 6-11 height.
Cadwell needs to be the off-guard. He MUST be the #2 guard. He's wasted at the point.
The rest of the team needs to match Cadwell's intensity on the court. Well, maybe not quite--Caddie had at least one dumb foul tonight, but an overall increase in intensity from top to bottom is needed.
I think we've got a lot of talent on the court, it's a matter of getting all of the players to find their roles and then consistently executing those roles to the best of their abilities.
That's enough of a rant for the night. Tomorrow: The Women of Troy!
Why practice an offense for the entire preseason only to change it after 3 games? Especially when whe have a young team that doesn't even get the stuff they've been practicing for a month?
Mac played a great game scoring a career high 21 points. We should probably have him stand in the corner of the court for the whole game next time they play. :
None of the freshman were as productive as they were the first 3 games. Typically I would chalk this up to freshman inconsistency, but when all three play as poorly as they did tonight, there might be something else going on.
Anyone got post game comments? Maybe that could shed some light on things for me. I forgot to turn on the radio when I got in the car, I know, rookie mistake.
Here's to looking forward to the women's game tomorrow night.

BROOKINGS - Four games into this season that won't be judged by results, the South Dakota State men's basketball team is 0-4, and the frustration is beginning to mount.
Jackrabbits coach Scott Nagy was disappointed with his team's lack of execution during crunch time in Thursday's 74-66 loss to Idaho at Frost Arena.
But he was more concerned with the way the team reacted to its physical failures.
"I'm a little concerned about the attitudes late in the game," Nagy said. "When we turned it over and we should have been picking it up, we had guys hanging their heads. We can't do that, because losers do that - and we don't want to act like that."
The game was as close late - the Vandals (1-1) led by two points with 2:41 left - as it was on paper. Yet it will go down as another contest that SDSU, no matter how few results it's expecting this season, could have won. . . . (read more)
I dont know if there is much I can add. I do think the talent is much better than what we have had the past two years. I think our guys need some more time to develope. Engen could be a great asset with more body weight. We seemed to run a back door play with Loney putting the ball in the hoop. That was one play that Idaho seem to have problems with.
The Idaho coach and I have one thing in common --a 46 plus waist line.
Seriously though, Idaho Coach Pfieffer seemed to coach his new guys pretty good. He has a ton of years of coaching experience at Lewis-Clark Jr College so he must have a pretty good network amongst the JUCO people across the country, and that explains the 11 new people with most of them JUCO players. We face them again I believe so it might be harder to win on their floor. But who is say we will not improve, I am not going to make that statement..
It's not an excuse -- but a fact -- that Idaho had leadership that this year's team cannot and will not match this year.
The Vandals started two seniors and three juniors, and had three more juniors come in for relief. Only one non-junior/senior player scored points (2). IMHO that contributes to a melt-down under pressure late in the game.
One other interesting point, which I'm sure you all noted, is that the bench outscored the starters. What does it mean? I'm not sure, but it was nice to get points from the bench, and it's not so great to get inconsistent points from the starters. However, it would seem that Jose got the start because of his performance in the last game in Ohio. And Casey, who noted on his radio interview that he played very poorly in Ohio (felt he was letting the team down), came in off the bench. Switch those two around and the starters would have outscored the bench. :'(
Casey was awesome, Caddy was his usual self but had a couple of miscues late, and it was good to have Loney back in there!
Other than that it wasn't real pretty. Frias had a trainwreck but has been showing some promise as of late. Kai was very quiet. Did Kleinjan even play? Not good when a senior essentially plays the whole game and gets the bagel in the point column. I keep waiting for him to step up!
I still believe this team is going to come around and suprise us in the long run but we didn't have it in the last five minutes last night!

SUPERBUNNY
Did you miss the first 3 games of the season? He led us in points all 3 games. He came up pretty big in every one of those, don't you think?
Maybe you meant I "kept" waiting for him to step up. If that's the case, I totally agree with you.
