True freshman nears return to help Jackrabbit men

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Garrett Callahan hasn't played a game for the South Dakota State men's basketball team, yet the true freshman point guard has become a regular part of coach Scott Nagy's postgame report.
"He would have changed completely how the game looked in terms of pressure," Nagy said - unabated - after a 55-point loss against Kent State.
"When we get Garrett back, you're just not going to believe how much better we're going to be," Nagy said following a four-point defeat to Alabama A&M.
"I'm not saying Garrett's the savior, but what's happened to us, our head's been ripped off and it's hard for us to function," Nagy said when his team lost to VMI and dropped to 0-3 for the first time in 27 years.
Fortunately, Callahan's actual injury was short of decapitation.
He broke a bone in his right hand when his pinkie and index fingers got stuck in the jersey of a teammate during practice Oct. 27. The cast was removed Tuesday - but not for good, as had been hoped. Nagy said that Callahan's hand was re-casted, meaning he'll miss Thursday's home opener against Idaho (0-1). Pending the results of an X-ray next Monday, the earliest he could play would be Nov. 22 at at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

He ran the point from Day 1 of preseason practice, so his debut will restore positional order to a club that features seven freshmen. He'll bolster SDSU's depth and, more than likely, help it cut down on turnovers (25.3 per game). He should take some of the focus off Cadwell, who led the team in scoring last season at 15.6 points per game and has totaled 21 in three games this season.
