True freshman nears return to help Jackrabbit men
    By Terry Vandrovec

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Garrett Callahan hasn't played a game for the South Dakota State men's basketball team, yet the true freshman point guard has become a regular part of coach Scott Nagy's postgame report.

"He would have changed completely how the game looked in terms of pressure," Nagy said - unabated - after a 55-point loss against Kent State.

"When we get Garrett back, you're just not going to believe how much better we're going to be," Nagy said following a four-point defeat to Alabama A&M.

"I'm not saying Garrett's the savior, but what's happened to us, our head's been ripped off and it's hard for us to function," Nagy said when his team lost to VMI and dropped to 0-3 for the first time in 27 years.

Fortunately, Callahan's actual injury was short of decapitation.

He broke a bone in his right hand when his pinkie and index fingers got stuck in the jersey of a teammate during practice Oct. 27. The cast was removed Tuesday - but not for good, as had been hoped. Nagy said that Callahan's hand was re-casted, meaning he'll miss Thursday's home opener against Idaho (0-1). Pending the results of an X-ray next Monday, the earliest he could play would be Nov. 22 at at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
    . . .
He ran the point from Day 1 of preseason practice, so his debut will restore positional order to a club that features seven freshmen. He'll bolster SDSU's depth and, more than likely, help it cut down on turnovers (25.3 per game). He should take some of the focus off Cadwell, who led the team in scoring last season at 15.6 points per game and has totaled 21 in three games this season.

    Re: Callahan

I'm not sure how many on the board saw Butler beat Indiana last night? Butler's AJ Graves exemplifies how valuable a good point guard can be to a team if he can break a press, dish the ball and score. He probably shoots more than a lot of point guards (4-18) but he was able to penetrate and get to the foul line (10-10). Indiana was predictably bigger and more athletic, but Butler did the little things they had to do to win and I don't see why the Jacks can't play a similiar game. I'm very anxious to see Callahan because I have never seen Nagy tout a freshman and predict an immediate impact from a player. I think the main reason is we don't really have anyone else on the team with a similiar skill set. A part of me would like to see Callahan redshirted so we can have him at the point for four years in the Mid-Cont. I think Frias is coming on and I was really impressed with his interview and maturity level following a recent game.

I saw it, Butler impressed me at Frost and continues to impress me this year. They have a well-balanced team but they really need the 3-point shot to fall. Graves struggled big time but figured out a way to get is done. If you think back to our best teams at SDSU there is always a guy similar to graves leading the backcourt. I hope Callahan is that guy.

I was at the game and sitting right next to a Butler student section, it was fun.

          Re: Callahan

Frias admitted in the post-game that the VMI game was "his kind of game" i.e. New York street ball. I think he struggles a bit with the kind of disciplined play that Nagy demands.

At the risk of topic drift (which I rationalize by saying it's about point guards in general), what's the 2006-07 take on why Mackenzie Casey doesn't play more? Is it just that he's not quite quick enough to play the D-I game? Does he turn it over too much, or shoot too much or too little? The few times Snookums and I have seen him play, he's looked pretty good, so he's a favorite around the Palatial Abode, and we wonder why he isn't on the court a bit more, especially with the current point guard situation (there! brought it back to Callahan!)

From what I understand he's not quite big enough and not quite quick enough.

And not quite disciplined enough.  I think he just isn't quite talented enough for the DI level.  I think Frias has the talent but also lacks the discipline necessary to excel at this level.  Mackenzie could probably fill in just as well as Frias but Nagy seems to be leaning Jose's way early this year.

                Re: Callahan

The Jacks did not get good news Tuesday. Garrett had to have his hand recasted and will not be available Thursday for the game against Idaho. He will have his hand reexamined next Monday. Good luck Garrett. This info was in Terry's blog on the Argus website.

It was also in Terry's article in my version of the Argus (yes I re-subscribed thanks to Terry). Still a chance he will be back for the UW-M game.

Nagy had quite the smile this afternoon at practice8-). Garrett's got his cast off and could be playing against UW-Milwaukee and UNI this week.

Great News if he can play. Maybe he can be the boost they need right now. I will be down in Cedar Falls for the UNI game on Friday. Hope to see Callahan there too.

This is certainly good news for the team. I'm not so sure it wouldn't be better for Callahan and the future to have him redshirt.

I couldn't disagree more--I think redshirting Callahan would be exactly the wrong message to send to the team and to the fans. This program needs to start showing progress immediately. So far, in two D-I seasons and change, it has shown the opposite of progress.

That's gotta change. If Callahan's the impact player that Nagy thinks he is, then he's got to be on the court with the rest of the youngsters as much as possible and as soon as it's medically reasonable for him to play.

Well, he's only missed 4 games, its not like the season is half over, there are still something like 25 games left. If he is a starter and will contribute to the team I don't see the harm in getting him in there now. Even if he plays this year he will be just a junior in our first year of postseason eligibility. Personally I'd rather he play this year and next and have two years experience playing with the rest of the team going into 2008 rather than holding him out just because he's missed a few games.
