    Re: Jared Vlastuin

See the Cross County and Track and Field Thread...today (12/06/08) Vlastuin entered the long jump in the first indoor meet for the Jackrabbits held at Mankato...24 feet 2 inches, a new school indoor record (the old record was 23 feet, 11.5 inches). That's real springs, sports fans. First meet of the season, too. The guy's the real deal.

Is he going to be playing in Frost in the future or not?

          Only Jared knows.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

            Re: Jared Vlastuin

Coach addressed this situation a little bit at the Sioux Empire Staters luncheon on Tuesday (he can talk about it now because Jared is an enrolled student at SDSU) and acknowledged that Jared did indeed express an interest in playing basketball but long story short he has decided to concentrate on track at this time because there was a scholarship available there and not in basketball.

Coach explained breifly that the NCAA has a hierarchy system for scholarships. Football is at the top of the list and although the details weren't explained basketball ranks somewhere in between football and track. The point is that a scholarship for any student athlete who participates in two sports will count toward the sport highest in the hierarchy.

In this case if Jared wanted to participate in both basketball and track, the scholarship would have to count toward basketball. Since the Jacks do not at this time have a scholarship to offer, he cannot participate in basketball as a scholarship athlete.

Put another way, if he were to compete in basketball at this time, he would have to forfeit his track scholarship.

Although I know he is a very good basketball player...I also know he has a chance to be a national track champion. If he can be in only one sport, I hope he has his chance to make an impact on the national scene in track.

Jared would really energize Frost with some high flying Matt Jones type dunks! I'm hoping we see him on the team at some point.

Maybe after his first 2 years dominating the track sence he will switch over and try a new challenge. After a Basketball Scollie opens up, I wouldnt be surprised to see him atleast consider the idea. Ethier way, as long as he is a student athlete at SDSU I think we should be happy, no matter which sport he is playing for.

If I read your post correctly, you cant be a scholarship athlete in track and a walk on in basketball. So since we have no open basketball scholarships at the moment he cant play basketball, period. Thanks for the clarification.

Exactly. It was kind of a funny moment at the luncheon. After Nagy explained the situation he asked, "Does that make sense?" which was followed with a resounding silence throughout the room. Then about 10 full seconds later the whole room including coach errupted into laughter.

I guess the end result is, it doesn't really make sense, but coach did explain the situation well enough.

After he asked if that made sense, the guy flatly said no. thats what i think got people laughing.

                          Re: Jared Vlastuin

The rule is intended to keep schools from loading up on athletes for their football program, for instance, by giving them track scholarships, or even rowing scholarships for that matter. It is a tough break for Jared but it is one of the rules that I think makes sense. There are not a lot of rules from the NCAA that I can say that about!

To bad it doesn't count against which ever sport your better at. In his case it might really be track. Would be impossible to determine though. Which ever sport he does, track, or if he goes to basketball latter in his career if there is a chance. Im sure he will make sdsu fans and such proud either way. he very easily could have gone elsewhere for a basketball scholarship instead of track, but his choice was SDSU. I wouldn't take that lightly either.

                              Re: Jared Vlastuin

TV made a good point about missing seasons.

Basketball overlaps all of the indoor season.

BTW: This kid could help the Jacks draw in quality recruits vs. NDSU and USD in track and field (and before this devolves into a USD/SDSU thing: USD has a good track program and they've fast tracked it for post season eligibility--as SDSU did with wrestling and volleyball).

Actually new track facilities would do =more=, but work with what you got, I guess.
