I think the other teams are more talented than ours. They hit bigger shots, get more rebounds, get more loose balls, play better defense and consistently defeat our team. Experience plays a part but if each player on the floor is a little better than what we can put out there, it takes an elevated level of intensity and team work to win. We don't have that in this group right now and there isn't a lot of time to develop it.

Discouraging to say the least. We have 4 DI wins so I know this team can compete but for some reason they don't seem to compete each time they step on the court. UVSC is in their 4th year of transition to DI, they are an independent team like we are. This is a team I expect us to beat, especially on our home court. A lot of improvement is what we need, not excuses, not second guessing, just improvement.

Like all young teams they just have to learn how to win. The first and last 4 min. of halfs are where a good team plays some of its best basketball.

The Jacks, though improving, are still just a little too thin in talent and depth, it seems. They can't sustain top effort for a whole game without the help of some breaks. Another year and a couple more players should make a big difference.

You guys got to keep your heads up. Utah Valley State is actually a pretty decent team. I think their RPI is 150ish or so.

Nagy expects more out of this team than he is getting, that is what frustrates me. Coach consistently states that he expects things to be better than they are. Lack of execution, lack of performance, we should be better right now. Its on the players and they need to accept that and increase their level of play. Coach expects the same, you can hear it in his voice.

Over to the women's game. Coming off the U of M and the UMD victories (BTW USD lost to UMD tonight).

classic. I wonder what the USD coach has to say now.

this teams just needs to have some confidence, it seems that as soon as the other team starts their run the jacks just hang thier heads and say "here we go again"  .....we need a leader, and someone who can put the team on thier back for a few positions. Last year it was Cadwell, but he doesn't seem to be having as good of a year this year to me. Not as clutch as he was last year.

BROOKINGS - There's a pattern forming here, and it's getting old for the South Dakota State men's basketball team.

Once again, the young Jackrabbits hung with a more successful, more experienced and possibly more talented team for 30 minutes only to get hung with a loss.

This time, Utah Valley State - with four starting seniors and more victories than any other NCAA Division I Independent - rallied from a four-point deficit with a 16-2 run midway through the second half. Tough game last night, it has got to be so frustrating for the players and coaches.

Lately, I've been going by the mantra "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

But I did have a little bit to say on the game. I'll try to keep it in the constructive criticism category.

While Cadwell and Callahan are very talented players, often it seems that we don't even run an offense because they try to penetrate and everyone else stands around. Kind of the old Michael Jordan syndrome in his early years with the Bulls.

Many of the posters think we do not have talented enough players to play on the DI level. However, from what I've seen, all our players are athletic enough to set screens and run.

It is very easy to play defense when 1 guy is moving with the ball in his hand and 4 guys are standing still. We played right with Utah Valley last night until the 13-2 run in the second half. If I remember correctly, the run happened when Garrett, Matt, and Jose started trying to take people off the dribble. There were a lot of sets where we had 1 or fewer passes before throwing up an 8 foot shot with 3 defenders on the shooter.

IMO, this is why we give up so many easy baskets to our opponents. Because they are constantly moving bodies, moving the basketball, and 4-5 passes later they have an open shot.

I think with so many true and red shirt freshman playing, we might be doing about as much as we can expect. I am amazed the games have been close. I think by the time Williams Bassett and Callhan are seniors, we will have a completely different team. Kai keeps getting rebounds right and left and thats is surprising in some ways considering his lower size and often up against bigger people. I do wonder about the offense they are trying to run. They most likely are not on the same page all the time, and again, practice makes perfect. I think its going to be tough to get 10 wins, but with the youth maybe we can't expect much more. I going to make most of the game even though we may not be on the winning end.

It seems to me that some of the posters in regards to this time need to be a little more rational...or at least consider some facts...Utah Valley has a very good program, has 16 wins in each of the last two seasons while moving into Division I, started four seniors and a junior, and a junior reserve who lit up the 3-point light last night...and has a strong rpi rating.

They were deeper, and I thought much fresher at the end. We played basically eight players, four of whom are freshmen. Anybody who watched Cadwell closely had to know that his hip pointer was killing him...but he still gutted it out. Despite all this we hang tough except for one stretch.

It is disappointing to keep losing and especially on our home court, but the teams are getting any easier. Texas Pan American beat NDSU last night, and we know we're going to have our hands full with the Bison. As Nagy said, the team is playing hard.
