Good story. Holdren seems like a nice kid. He had nothing but positive things to say about SDSU. You can't blame him for wanting to see if he could contribute at Illinois, particularly after the way things went here. Sounds like he wanted to get back home.
    Holy nutmeg!

      Re: TV's Article on Holdren

Yeah, it was a nice article about Steve but the timing for me is a little troubling. I have to say that the second I opened the Argus this morning and saw the headline I said to myself, "Oh, here we go! Why now?" I'm happy that things have worked out for Steve but have always been troubled by his decision to bail out.

I guess you wouldn't write a "what if" article like that if our record was 10-5 right now but does it need to be written. What if Steve honored his commitment? What if? What if? What if?

What if we just move on and support the players and coaches that are currently committed to SDSU Basketball?

Nagy's quotes couldn't have been more appropriate. "You talk to those kids, they'd all have nothing but good things to say," Nagy said of Holdren, Gilbert and Cadwell, who all came to SDSU in the fall of 2004. "When we recruited those guys, we talked about commitment and sticking through it when times got tough.

"They all look at you and go, 'Yeah, I'm committed, Coach.' And then when things got tough, they weren't. In Andre's situation, I don't blame him at all. But in the other two, it would have been nice to see those kids stay committed to us."

Terry Vandrovec has done a phenominal job in reporting on SDSU Athletics. He has been fair in both praise and criticism. This is the first article of his that I have taken exception with.

Well written, but a poor topic in my opinion. What is next? Articles titled "What If SDSU waited till now to go DI" or "What if Matt Jones did not get sick" or "What if Creighton had stayed in the NCC"? All of them are topics from the past, and the past cannot be changed. "What if.." is the start of a discussion that really leads nowhere.

Terry's article is a good one and he asked the questions many have thought about since Holdren left.

I think that 's a great idea let's try to stay positive, this week has been trying for many of us

            especially some of the players.

              JackJD,

I didn't say it wasn't a good article. The timing of it is what bothers me. Why now? Maybe after the season. I've wondered some of the same things. I just think doing it now is disrespectful to those that are here and are committed to SDSU.

Hopefully this article will serve as a motivation for the team to turn it around but if I was on the team and saw that article I would say, "You have got to be kidding me". Probably with a couple of colorful metaphors thrown in for emphasis.

I'm glad to see Nagy's comments regarding those players who bailed on the program. Yes they are young men, but they made a committment to the program and then turned their back on it and there fellow teamates. Some on this forum seem to think that's okay don't count me as one of them. Where was Illinois when Holdren graduated from High School?

I agree Mrs. Williams. It is now up to the coaches to learn from past mistakes and keep the players we have now focused on year 2 or 3 of these guys sticking together. I think the focus has to be on keeping the Frosh and Sophs seeing the big picture that if they work hard now and learn to compete every night that in 2 years this will pay off big time.

One thing I am beginning to wonder. Was the re-addition of Beren a good thing for this team? Could there be a leadership split and that be causing problems?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Ben Beran is the epitome of what a student-athlete at SDSU represents. If there are guys on the team that don't agree with that then they are the ones we don't want on the team. I'm actually surprised such a question would be posed by any fan on this board. Borderline ridiculous.

Agreed 100%. Loved Nagy's comments on this matter.

Why would there be a leadership problem..... The only thing I had against Beran and Mo coming back was I thought maybe a young team that needs to learn would become to reliable on seniors and not grow like they would without them but I haven't seen that this year..... I will agree that Terry did ask the right questions and Holdren answered them...... Nagy said what I think he had to say but I don't blame any of them for leaving, I listened to them against Kentucky that year and I thought they were back and they started hot and then they dropped like flies either because of injury or suspension and SDSU had to rebuild, when you are rebuilding the distance problem becomes bigger, when you are winning or at least competing you are willing to put up with a bit more but when you are getting blown out of the gym its a little different.....

Personally I don't blame anybody for what has happened it wasn't anybodies fault, can't blame Nagy because he recruited the kids and they performed, can't blame the kids because do you blame guys for wanting to leave after not competing in the majority of there games, for injury plagued seasons and most important they weren't post season eligible..... Its tough to look back

I am with you 100%. Let's support those that are there now and let them know we are behind them. Good story, but let's look forward...

I suspect the timing of the article was due to Terry driving through Champaign on the way between Macomb and Indianapolis. No conspiracy there.

I like the article mainly because of Nagy's quote, which I'll repeat again here:
"They all look at you and go, 'Yeah, I'm committed, Coach.' And then when things got tough, they weren't. In Andre's situation, I don't blame him at all. But in the other two, it would have been nice to see those kids stay committed to us."
That pretty much says everything that really needs to be said.
                            "I think we'll be OK"

These young men knew they weren't post season eliegible when they accepted the scholarship. I don't agree with anything you posted, but what's new.
