  • Re: IPFW Game 2

    My thoughts:

    1) It was quite frustrating to watch us play defense.
    2) Why on Earth is Cadwell playing 28 minutes when his production is zilch and his confidence is below that? I'm at a loss here what to say........
    3) Bassett has come along nicely. He helped fill the void with Loney playing only 6 minutes.
    4) Engen had some good plays in 13 minutes of action, even taking a charge. If he can bulk up a bit and stay healthy, he should be a solid contributor for the next three years.
    5) Kai needs some help because teams are starting to key on him.
5a) With tonight's game, Kai is now the team's leading scorer.

Noticing Loney only played 6 minutes. For those that were at the game, why was that? Was he struggling or not giving any effort? He doesn't seem like a guy who would give up, so wondering what peoples take on that is.

        Jackrabbit men come up short

        By Staff Reports
        Argus Leader
        Published: March 2, 2007

The South Dakota State University men's basketball team freshmen led the way, but it wasn't enough as the Jackrabbits fell 83-72 against Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne on Thursday at Frost Arena.

Only 1,010 fans braved the blizzard to watch the game. The SDSU-IPFW game was one of the few athletic events to take place Thursday as weather canceled pretty much everything else in the eastern part of the state.

Garrett Callahan led the Jacks with 17 points to go along with his career-high eight rebounds. Thomas Bassett scored a career-high 14 points for SDSU and Kai Williams also had 14 points.

        All three are freshmen.

Jose Frias rounded out the Jacks' double-digit scorers with 10 points and eight rebounds.  .  .  .  (read more)

We have to keep these players for all 4 years. That is the bottom line.

I didn't realize his minutes were so low.  I wonder if he's not injured.  We could have used his defensive effort on the inside.  I thought Engen was getting dominated, and Frias was often mismatched.  Maybe Nagy is trying to get more minutes for Engen and Bassett, but Cadwell should have been the one sitting on the bench.

I was told they wanted to get the younger big men more experience because they were playing better last night.

Indeed, Bassett had 7 rebounds (his high is 8) to go with his 14 points while Engen had season highs for both scoring and rebounding (7 points, 5 boards).

I would have thought letting them get game time with our most experinced post would have been good for learning. Plus Cadwell i agree if is struggling that bad should be the one sitting down.

Nice to see everyone turning their back on Cadwell after 3-4 bad games. If he is in a slump, encouragement is what he needs, not bench time. Keep in mind he is a SOPHOMORE.

This seems to be the trend of many of the posters on this board: if you are not having career nights every time you take the floor, you are unproductive and should be riding pine.

Also, just because someone doesn't score doesn't mean they are being unproductive.

I think the IPFW team and Dane Fife is my new favorite team to come in to Frost and be harassed by the students. Nice guy, look forward to playing them in the Mid-Con next year.

Cadwell is, along with Williams, Callahan, Bassett, and Engen, one of the foundations of our future success. It's painful to watch (or hear) him struggle night in and night out.

But it's a one-game season now. Close this year out on a winning note, then then we all can go away, lick our wounds, and plan our eventual revenge on all of Division I in the coming years.

I'm not turning my back on Cadwell. I'm just concerned that his swagger-which is a huge part of his game- is gone. I know he's just a sophomore, but he was the leader of this team at the end of last season. His production is down significantly this season. His scoring average has gone from 15.6 to 11.6 ppg. His 3-point shooting percentage has gone from 39% to 31%.

If we're going to expect this team to bounce back next year and contend for a spot in the Big Dance in two years, we need the Cadwell of last season, not the Cadwell of the last couple months.

BTW-Thursday night was the first game in which Cadwell did not score for SDSU.
