    Re: Montana Game

I was happy with the effort tonight, I thought our team raised its level to match the competition. That being said, turnovers and poor 3-point % were the killers for the Jacks tonight. Montana is a very quality opponent, maybe the best we will see in frost Arena. Our team showed the athleticism necessary to compete tonight. It was definite improvement so I am satisfied.

Would like to see Kai in areas other than three feet behind the arc. He is a mismatch wherever he goes. He needs to have plays run for him that get him the ball with the opportunity to drive to the basket or take 10-12 foot jumpers.

Callahan looked a lot better tonight which is great because his last game was really rough. Ben made some uncharacteristicly bad plays which he will correct.

#2 for Montana was a very solid, smooth player.

These guys are making progress but we need to start getting the W's in these games.

    That's my $.02!

The one thing I have to say about this team compared to last year is its there. This team has legit D-I talent from more then just 1 or 2 guys....

Last year the game was at Montana and SDSU lost 87 to 47.

We did much better this year. Still have a way to go, but making progress.

          Go State!!!

Something to think about, Montana beat Tim Miles' new team, Colorado State, pretty bad to open their season.

Anyone have any word on why Nagy pulled Dale's redshirt.

Nagy said he was short on guards and Moss has been doing some good things. Wants to get him more minutes.
                Holy nutmeg!

                  Re: Montana Game

I guess they had no intentions of red-shirting Dale and it appeared last night that it was a mid game decision when actually it was more of an experience issue. They had been playing Dale at the 3 all season and when they realized they needed more guard help they have moved him more to a 1 or 2 but he hasn't been in that position long enough to play him there in game situations. Expect him to see more minutes as the season wears on. I commented a few weeks ago that Clint Sergent needs to be a 2 if they expect consistent scoring. If they play him at the 1 it will cut down on his opportunities. He does appear to be the best option at the 1 right now.

I am glad to see Dale playing from the little I have seen he plays very good defence and he is one of the more athletic players on the team.....

I wouldn't look too much into that score CSU has something like 8 scholarship players.

This is what Coach Nagy said in the post game show. I think he made a good decision. Trying to compact a Big Dance team by redshirting will make more problems down the road. I think he learned from those last years in D2 that those medical redshirts eventually left the cupboard bare, and we still did not make it out of the Regional at the D2 level.

Dale Moss is an excellent player and we might be better off to let him cut his teeth this year instead of next year. I think we do need Moss for depth.

I think Tim Miles inherited a mess at CSU, so its going to take a while for his Rams to start doing good things like winning. Some of the players from last year got into some trouble. I dont recall the details, so having only 8 on scholorship might be a fact. If our guys were to give an effort like last night against Montana, we too could probably take CSU at this point in time.

I heard so much about Matt Martin, and he is a solid guard, no doubt about that. He also can shoot. I can't believe he is a senior, as it seems just weeks ago that he signed a letter of intent to Montana.

I believe Terry mentioned the tall guy from Williston ND, is one that the Bison were recruiting very heavily last year and lost out to Montana. I think he is a still kind of a project for Montana though, he did not do much in the game. I was impressed with the Montana coach. The program says he played pro ball in Europe and USA for 12 years. He seemed to really understand the game, and he called his one player out for taking more than a hand check I think against Dale Moss or was it Garrett, dont recall. towards the end of the game. I respect coaches for doing those things.

Maybe Kai needs to relax a little and have fun, and yes we probably are expecting too much from him in terms of performance. I think sooner or later he will get back in the swing and flow and will have some great games. The thing we have to remember is all our oppenents have him on video. I was a little surprised to see Clint two teamed to start the game, could this have been learned from the DWU video? Montana seemed to know all about Clint Sargent.

Kai still lacks intensity and was a non-factor tonight. Don't mean to be critical of his play this season but I expected more from him. I'll lower my expectations and maybe will be impressed the next game.

Sargent playing the 1 takes away from his scoring. He's by far the best perimeter shooter and tonight showed they don't have many that can consistently shoot from beyond the arch. 0-11 from 3-pt line until they finally hit one.

Way too many turnovers again and just silly ones....can't make a post entry pass, dribble off the leg, grab a great rebound then a soft pass for a turnover. It's frustrating to watch and at no point did I get the impression that the SDSU athletes felt they were in control of the game and were going to win. The first half was impressive in that the score was tied at the half but it was sluggish and neither team got it going.

Impressed with Cordova the first half. He made a few second half mistakes and rode the pine the rest of the way. I think Coach Nagy is getting frustrated with the lack of intensity and trying to figure out which kids he can rely on to play hard all the time. So far only Clint Sargent has shown consistency from the first three games I've seen.

Matt Martin wasn't a huge factor the first half but he hit some big threes the second half and really didn't shoot too much. Montana has a solid team and should contend for the Big Sky title and most likely be the conference bid for the big dance come March.

Improvement over the Mary and DWU games, but not enough to win. Play harder and more consistent, cut down on the 20+ turnovers and a win is within their reach.
Pretty much my thoughts too. There were times in the second half where the game was almost unbearable to watch because of the apathy and carelessness with the ball. Don't know how many times outlet passes to the guards were thrown away or soft tosses were taken by the Grizz.

I think we have the talent to compete, there's just no continuity and little team-work on offense. Too much dribbling and trying to create own shots. We had 24 TO's and 12 assists for the game, we just need to take care of the ball.

I took a little consolation knowing that if we played like we did last night last year we would have lost by 30+. With our team this year it was 11. I think the potential is there, but its going to be frustrating watching the team this year.

Finally, someone please explain to me Nagy's thoughts on benching Cordova most of the second half. He was the only reason we were in the game at half-time. The kid's a beast, fun to watch him crash the boards. A physical presence we've sorely missed on the inside the last couple seasons.

Bassett also looked pretty good in the first half and then sat most of the second.

Enough rambling from me, hopefully by conference games the team gets stuff straightened out.
