    Re: Montana Game

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't we have trouble taking care of the ball the early part of last year? I seem to remember we did and then that seemed to get better. Hopefully that will take place this year which will keep us in a lot more games.

I think part of the reason Cordova was benched was because he was out sized pretty bad even though Loney was out sized more.... Also Cordova isn't quite there on the offensive end, he needs to become that back to the basket type scorer....

Cordova had 8 boards and 5 points in 17 minutes.

Bassett had 3 boards, 2 pts, and an assist in 5 minutes.

Loney had 0 pts, 0 boards, and 4 fouls in 15 minutes.

I understand Nagy is feeling out his players and trying to get his rotations figured out, but it was night and day the difference that Cordova made on the boards. I don't care if he scores a point all night, we need his physicality on the inside.

Loney is a great guy and a hard worker, he just isn't as big or athletic a player as we need to have out there.

I agree.... I want to see Kai, Moss and Cordova on the court at the same time....

i like moss as an energy/defensive player but he is not a 1. i see him as a quality back up to sarge and kai. cordova was not played i heard because he was having a hard time guarding hasquet in the second half. he will be at least a solid player.

              Re: Montana Game

Jordan Hasquet is a heck of player for Montana. Matt Martin seemed whiney. Having Mo Berte available probably would have helped the Jacks offset some of Montana's size advantage, but turnovers were the real killer. Palarca didn't play much, so guard options were limited. The speed of the game and fouls were problems for most of our big guys. But all in the all, the Jacks looked much better than in earlier games against weaker opponents. There's hope.

I like how this team never quit even when they were down big they stayed in there and fought back to a single digit loss.... didn't see to much of that last year...

Cordova did do well, but was getting eaten up on the defensive side. Hasquet scored like 12 straight points on him in the second half -- I wish he would have gotten back in, but I believe that could have been the reason.

I think Kai will get on track, and Mo will certainly help when he gets back. UWM lost to UNI tonight by 7 - those are our next two opponents this Tuesday and Friday. Let's come out of this week 3-1! UNI lost thier starting point gaurd for the year, and should struggle a little this year. UWM is for surea winnable game - they are a bit down this year again.

                    Re: Montana Game

I was there, I agree with whats been said. 19-2 run early in the second half. Keyed by a lack of intensity from our defenders and #2 being "in the zone". The turnovers were ridiculous. No one wanted to take the team on their back. Beran showed some flashes but had 7 turnovers and missed a bunch of open shots. Still, he is solid and will be needed as the frontcourt leader. Kai wasn't really looking to score as part of the offense. That needs to change. Engen did okay. Bassett and Loney just aren't athletic enough. Cordova could play a big role. Callahan and Sargent showed some flashes but didn't look like on court captains, hope one can step up. Palarca is an interesting addition. I think he could be the 1. Moss can help by locking down a 2 or 3 on defense, not sure he has a DI offensive game. Cassidy took the ball to the hole a couple of time and drew fouls. Shot FTs like the rest of the team, 50/50.

Definitely more talented and holding more potential than last year. However, no real sign of the intensity or desire that a team needs to be successful. I suspect thats largely an issue of confidence and experience. I hope that grows, it has to or this year is going to linger on. The turnovers will go down, they have to. I hope we find someone who can shoot the ball. This team needs to have a perimeter game in order to be successful.

Lastly, we can't play a zone defense at all and we can't score against a zone defense. Nagy must not have much experience with zones. I don't either. When we play zone the other teams get lay-ups and wide open 3's as well as every offensive rebound. When other teams play zone we don't get a sniff at the hoop and rarely rebound misses. I'm not sure I understand that.

These guys just need to play with confidence! Act like you belong on a Division 1 basketball team. Not sure why Nagy has such a problem attacking zones, they look like a soccer team passing the ball around mid-field. They need to dribble penetrate the zones or run some more sets against it. Nagy has plenty of sets to run, i did notice they ran a couple saturday night

I think one reason we had attacking the Montana zone is that our entry passes were somewhere between sloppy and horrible. That was a problem all night. And if we can't get the ball inside on a zone, I'm not sure who we have to slash/penetrate. That's just a general thought one Saturay's game.

General thoughts on the Montana game:

Hasquet from Montana ... easily the best player on the court. He's a home-grown Missoula kid. He started going of and we did little to stop him. He's only a freshman? My God, he's going to be good.

Our entry passes were a disaster and led to many of the turnovers. Our being lazy at couple of times led to a couple more. What I mean is we would get a D rebound and stand there and a Montana player would tip to ball out and have an easy steal because we weren't paying attention. That happened two times, I think, but should never happen and if it happens once a night, that should be a wake-up call.

Williams has to score more. I was not impressed with his effort at all. That's not something said very often.

Cordova was the MVP of the night. He had some nice steals and was working hard.

On the whole, it wasn't a horrible showing. Last year, we would have (and did) lost by a lot more. The turnovers were rediculous, but it's not like we didn't belong in the same gym as Montana. Even so, we need to start measuring progress by wins, not by losses by fewer points.

He's actually a junior and is picked to be the Big Sky Player of the Year this year.

Kai was not happy either with his performance, and NO it has never been said because last year as a freshman he Carried the team!!!!!!

Nagy was running the right plays against the zone the shots just weren't falling... The shot in the corner that the guards missed time after time is the shot you want against a zone, they make that shot and its a different story.... I look for the team to play better tonight, should be a good game....
