Re: U of Mary Game Thread

I have to admit this game was really boring to watch as a fan. And that's saying a lot when I'm bored. Nothing really stood out in the game more than the massive amounts of turnovers each team had. Only positive is that no one got hurt and thats a plus so far in the young season.
It's good to have big Ben back, he makes the team more physical. Kai had a mixed game, needs to step it up night in and night out. We have young guards but they look fearless to get in on the action and play physical. The bench will need to step up big this year, no more playing like they did last night. It could be a long year or it could be a good year. The team has the power to decide. It would be nice to see some set plays for Kai, Ben, and Garret this year.
On the lighter side, we are on a pace to go undefeated this season

I was able to make it to the game as well...

It may be time for everyone to take a deep breath!!!

What were you really expecting out of the first group of games? We start two freshman and two sophs. Growing pains, mistakes, and a minimal amount of continuity is to be expected! Isn't it?

Cadsev, "The guard play sucked again." What are you talking about? I am fairly sure the guard play was more than solid against Dakota Weslyan, with Sargent and Pallarca both playing extremely well. If you want to use the term "sucked," which should not be used anyway, it would apply more to the 3-5 man positions who accounted for more than half our turnovers (13) and who were unable to grab rebounds, outside of AC and Beran at times.

As for setting up "set plays" for Callahan, why? If we are going to rely on Callahan as our second or third scorer, I can tell you now, calling this season a "long" one, is an understatement. Callahan is a good roll player, who needs to knock down shots when he is left open, and continue to make good passes as he has up to this point. I think the key to how successful the season will be, is how Sargent develops as a scorer. If Sargent isn't the 2nd or 3rd option and leading scorer, the Jacks will struggle all year, not just at the beginning. The development of Cordova and Cassady will also play large dividens to this year's success. I am also hoping to see Kai be more consistent as the year goes on. He has played two great first halves, and then is almost nonexistent in the second. It is early though, and will improve I am sure.

As I had stated in my post back when we were all predicting our end of year record. We are going to struggle at the beginning of the year, no doubt about that. What I am looking forward to is the middle to end of the year when the young players have more experience. I think we will all be pleased with the strides we have made before it is all said and done.

Patience is the key here, as many have already said. With a few additions in the years to come we will be just fine.

        We don't know that.

I don't disagree with anything else you have said but that doesn't change the fact that nothing promising has really come out of these first two games. If anything, we have struggle more than we expected. At least I hope we expected more than we have demonstrated thus far. I'm all for the positive attitude and preaching patience but don't scold people for expressing their displeasure. Disappointment can lead you down several roads. Complacency and acceptance, fatigue and resentment, or introspection, examination and improvement. Criticism is sometimes just and certainly can be productive.

Enough said, on to the Montana game. They certainly aren't world beaters themselves. I would think, if this team has it in them, the Jacks could win this game. As I said before, it appears every game is losable for this team right now, I'd like to see that change.

People better get used to "expressing their displeasure" than. Because this team isn't going to wow anyone night in and night out to start the season. They are young and inexperienced up to this point, it is wishful thinking to assume they weren't going to have growing pains with such a young backcourt.

"Nothing promising has really come out?" Sargent's play his first two games as a Jack is more than promising. Getting him more aggressive on the offensive end is another key. Cassady back in the lineup is promising. Anthony Cordova's play last night was promising as well.

There are quite a few things to build on. Of course there is going to be negativity, but give the team a break, they are one game into the year, and are 1-0. Good or bad play, it's a lot better than 0-1.

Agreed, MD, on to the Montana game.

Again, can't disagree. Thanks for the perspective and for understanding mine.

Here is the way I look at it
Kai played ok he didn't quite have it but still played good, Garret turned it on for a little bit then he slowed down towards the end but played pretty good, Sargent and Palarca played well considering they are TRUE freshman they weren't quite there but what do you expect, Cassady you could tell wasn't 100% yet I go to school with a kid that played against him and he said he is for real a very physical guy that can shoot when needed to. Cordova looked good on the boards is still a little raw but a great athlete.

Cadsev you need to quit hyping up Jordan Miller, he is what SDSU doesn't need.... I have talked to numerous AA players and they say he isn't D-I; I watched him play at North Carolina on webcast and he looked lost... I respect most of your opinions and views but sometimes you need to throw out your schooler bias and look at the picture. This team didn't play bad because of guard play it played bad because it couldn't rebound worth a crap I would much rather see that scholarship go to a big guy with good hands then an average combo guard. when we got 2 true freshman guards a true sophomore guard a true sophomore g/f a senior that will return next year at a guard and a junior in hs that is a guard that we have signed. O ya a 6-7 perimeter guy that is going to sign on wednesday also. its time we get a BIG with good hands...

Again, I see some of you using the "we are young" line of reasoning. Inexperience is only a valid defense when playing a veteran team, in my opinion.

Mary started 2 Juniors, a sophomore, and 2 freshmen. Off the bench the kids with the most minutes were 4 freshmen and a sophomore. Yes, we are young, but it is not like we were playing against a team with hundreds of games under their belts!

I couldn't agree with this more.

It sounds like Bassett is down. He isn't playing well and he knows it. Now might be a good time to build him back up.

I also think a coaching change would be one of the worst things we could do to the program at this point. I haven't always thought that way, but 8 months of cooling off, and I have had a change of thinking. Nothing good would come of it.

Yeah, I'm frustrated, but we have taken the court two times, and we won both games. We're not Kentucky, people. Heck, Kentucky isn't even Kentucky these days. At this point, we don't have the luxury of expecting blowouts, no matter who the opponent. If you look back to our DII days, there might be one opponent per year we would blow out by 30+, and it was with teams with an assortment of Seniors and Juniors on the team.

                    Mary started:

3 Juniors: Dosch, West, and Engelhardt.
1 Soph; Erdmann (looked like a very solid player)
                    1 Frosh: Wilhelm

You are correct though, the majority of their subs were Frosh.

Joeboo, just out of curiosity when is the last time you have been to a Jacks game in person? When have you seen Jordan Miller play? You seem to throw out a lot of hearsay and try to come across as an expert when I doubt you even get out of the Black Hills much!

                        I don't consider it hearsay....
I havn't been able to see Jordan Miller play because last spring was the first time the kid saw varsity time..... believe it or not I do know a thing about basketball.... I'm not even from the Hills so I get out a fair amount.

I don't want to get into this bs because I don't make it to to many games that i don't know anything..... because that is what it is bs.... I know just as much as the next guy if not more.... I can look at the roster and I can see what we need we have one 4 year scholarship that will be availble next year none the year after. So knowing what I know I would expect and I personally believe we need a big guy with good hands that has an offensive game.

I do because that is all you ever have to offer this board.

                                The facts are this....
There is 1 4 year scholarship that is available this year they may hold it over I DNK.
The facts are this. We have good YOUNG guards compared to post that other then Cordova are average at best or going to graduate.
The facts are this I DID watch the webcast game of Jordan Miller in North Carolina with Colton Iverson... HE looked lost... Fact I talk to numerous AA players they all say he isn't D-I (call that hearsay I call it asking somebody that has an expert opinion a little bit better then mine because I don't play AA basketball nor do I watch a lot of it)... Fact Jordan Miller was a JV player until the spring of last year
I don't want to knock Jordan Miller by any means because I think he is a good player and may even be a boarderline D-I player but he is not what we need.... He is a combo guard. and we only have Callahan and Sargent there....
Fact we have 3 hs verballs none are post.
