Re: U of Mary Game Thread

Joeboos comments are right re the circumstance of our team. We need to jettison Engen and Bassett or free up a couple of scholarships and bring in 2-3 JC posts for next year.

Hearsay - (street definition) I heard it, then I say it.

My Criminal Procedure prof in law school used the Marvin Gaye version of the song to introduce the concept, don't know the official title to Grapevine, but the key lyrics were, "I heard it from a friend of mine ..."

I havn't been able to see Jordan Miller play because last spring was the first time the kid saw varsity time..... believe it or not I do know a thing about basketball.... I'm not even from the Hills so I get out a fair amount.

I don't want to get into this bs because I don't make it to to many games that i don't know anything..... because that is what it is bs.... I know just as much as the next guy if not more.... I can look at the roster and I can see what we need we have one 4 year scholarship that will be availble next year none the year after. So knowing what I know I would expect and I personally believe we need a big guy with good hands that has an offensive game.

The problem with your comments are that you say things like "here is the way I look at it" and then go on a tangent which implies you have actually physically watched the team play. I feel pretty comfortable with my ability to talk basketball. My family is comprised almost entirely of ex and current coaches and/or college basketball players (present company excluded). However, I could be Coach K and I still wouldn't be able to intelligently make any assumptions about players on SDSU's roster unless I had an opportunity to actually watch them play. Having "people in the know" or listening to an occasional game on WNAX does not count as a close alternative. If you've watched the players play, you can comment. If not, I don't see how you have any basis for your opinions. This isn't a knock against you, except for the fact that you're the only guy who continually makes assumptions about players without ever even seeing them play. Until then, it just makes you sound arrogant and uninformed.

One sure way to further hurt any recruiting good will/momentum that we've built (or have remaining after our last 4 seasons) would be completely shattered if we told current scholarship players to take a hike simply because they aren't playing well. That sort of story gets out and is used by every team recruiting against us. Next thing you know, players aren't coming to SDSU because they heard you could lose your scholarship if you didn't play well.

Well, then what is an appropriate course of action? HOPE for the best? We've been doing that for YEARS now.

Only real option is to change the coaching staff if the current staff can't get it done. I'm not implementing that, but booting a couple players that didn't pan out is not the answer. And I'm not arguing they haven't been big disappointments. It's just that if you give a kid a scholarship, you're pretty much tied to him unless he can't cut the grades, or something similar that allows you to save face or have a reason (legit or not) when you cut him.

I'm not advocating changing coaches right now either, but as they say, you sleep in the bed you make. Finding the right guy to mold into what you need or building your team around an established guy seems to be the best model. Of course, if you can get the best talent then you just try to make the click. Our coaches haven't done either thus far and that is where the majority of the blame should be placed, not on a few players who have disappointed.

I thought I was done with this thread.

I don't blame you for the frustration. I think any SDSU fan, beit casual or die-hard, has to be frustrated with the men's basketball team in the past 4 seasons. We are all in agreement that we're longing for the days where the Frost was packed and the Jacks were on their game. I'm 100% on board with you there.

If the players we have are not getting it done it's either A)They were not capable of playing at this level and shouldn't have been recruited in the first place or B)The coaching staff is not helping them get better. I know its not that simplistic, but either way it falls back to the coaching staff. Since we are so young I don't know we can draw too many conclusions quite yet.

Seriously, can anybody really argue with that? Cadsev is one of my favorite members here (rep points your way) and always tells it like it is. I appreciate his candor.

The good news is there's nothing there that can't be fixed. I want to see this team go all out for 40 minutes (like the women's team does every time they take the floor.)

I always felt Nagy coached team came out with a great deal of intensity, hustle and poise. I realize the last few years have not produced many wins, but you don't have to have talent to do the above.

Its hard to ask for intensity when its on a holiday monday night.... I know its an excuse but it really is. Turnovers I think were for a numerous reasons one was just this is a young team that is starting 2 freshman and a guy that didn't play last year so they aren't quite into game mode settings yet.

Cadsev makes very good points but he has a tendency to say things that just befundle (if thats a word) my mind.... He says the guard play is bad and that we need to get a kid like Jordan Miller to sign (A kid he has hyped up all summer).... The guard play was shaky but it wasn't bad its not like the kids can't shoot or they can't handle the ball they just were making freshman mistakes. Palarca is a peer point guard a great ball handler, Sargent can shoot lights out, Callahan is a great combo guard, Kai is a good perimeter player, Cassidy is good at the wings, from the sounds of it the recruit coming in next year is a perimeter offensive player (pretty good on the boards from what I here) the 2 guys from Madison are wing players... We have wings we have combo guards, we need a post we have Cordova who is great on the boards is a little raw on the offensive end but I think that will come, they have Bassett who is more of a wing they have Engan who just needs to play physical he showed signs of it last year... I wouldn't care if the guy fouled out as long as he did it playing hard instead of this ticky tack type stuff. So we have 3 including the JuCo guy that will sign tomorrow post coming into next year. I am sick of going into games undersized Kai is a great player but he is not a 4.... I would much rather see him at the 2 rather then the 4.

                            GOD.....

I stopped reading your post after your first sentence. That sentence is completely wrong! You HAVE TO HAVE intensity to play this game and they just didn't play with it. THEY SHOULD HAVE INTENSITY FOR PRACTICE, let alone games. After their first game they needed to show the public something and it wasn't accomplished.

joeboo, unlike a lot of posters on this forum, I have no problem with you expressing your opinions. However, most midmajors do not achieve that status by recruiting big men.

The most current crop of mid majors typically put 2-3 shooters on the floor, a slasher, and a couple of hardworking post player types. Most of the posts are 6'8". Newsflash: 6'9" highschool players who can move, shoot, rebound, and pass probably do not have SDSU on their radar unless their home ZIP code is 57007 (and even that might be a stretch).

For the foreseeable future our bigs are going to have to be hard working overachievers. We have that right now, they just aren't necessarily playing like it.

One thing that does irk me is when people suggest booting players because of lackluster performance 2 games into a season. Right now Sargeant is looking pretty good and it seems like a lot of posters on here think he is all conference. 3 games from now when he is averaging 3 a game, the same posters will be calling him garbage and a recruiting mistake. That's just dumb. But I can guarantee that if he is averaging 3 a game some on here will say that.

It seems to happen a lot with our fans. The starting QB throws a couple of interceptions? Bury him on the bench. Basketball team is struggling? Cut players scholarships. Thank God our coaches are more level headed than this bunch.

Is that how you guys run your personal or business lives? Wife really made a stinker of a dinner tonight. She's gone. Employee had a bad day and cost the business some money...they're gone. Dog didn't scare up any birds...he's going the way of Old Yeller.

We're not DII anymore. We have stepped into a pond with bigger fish. It does take time to develop into a winner, how long that is I don't know. I'm content to trust the administration to do what is right for the school, its students, and its athletic department.
