Re: SDSU forward playing against the world (Kai)

NOVI SAD (FIBA U19 World Championship) - Spain enjoyed an 83-69 triumph over Canada in their first match of the eighth-finals at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Novi Sad.

Xavi Forcada led the way for the victors with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Javier Vega contributed a valuable 16 points and eight rebounds and Victor Claver 15 points.

The North Americans had the game's top two scorers in Kai Williams and Devoe Joseph, who managed 21 points apiece, but to no avail.

Scott Brittain's early jump-shot gave Canada a 2-0 lead in the opening seconds but soon after that Forcada's three-pointer put Spain in the ascendancy and they never relinquished the lead.

The Spaniards stretched away to lead 21-16 at the end of the first quarter and then again to hold a 41-34 advantage at half-time.

Canada, despite the best efforts of Williams, Joseph and Jon House who poured in 10 points, could not find a way back into the game.

Spain pulled further away in the remainder of the match, and ended up comfortable winners.

    SO ONTO THE NEXT GAME..........

It's encouraging to see Kai shooting well (FG = 14/30 47%) (3PT 6/12 = 50%), hopefully that will convince the coach to play him more.

I'm guessing that since Kai will probably be playing the 3 this year at state we will get to see more of his outside game. Looking forward to it.

Canada loses to Spain in Round of 12

                Jul 16th, 2007

(Novi Sad, Serbia) Canada was defeated for the third straight game at the U19 FIBA World Championships as they lost today to Spain by a score of 83-69. Spain came into the game with a 3-0 record, winning convincingly in all of their previous games against Korea, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. Kai Williams (Regina, SK) exploded on offence in the game with 21 points and adding 5 rebounds, doing his best to help the Canadian squad gain a victory. Devoe Joseph (Pickering, ON), who came into the game ranked second in tournament scoring, chipped in 21 points while adding five rebounds and two assists. Spain was led by Xavi Forcada with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

Scott Brittain (Oakville, ON) opened up the scoring in the first quarter, but Spain quickly responded with a three-pointer and gave them a lead that they would never relinquish. Spain took a 21-16 lead into the second quarter, and stretched their lead to 41-34 at halftime.

Williams and Joseph continued to score the ball to begin the second half, but to no avail. They were unable to chip away at Spain’s lead, as their accurate shooting kept them in front.

Canada started to climb back in the game in the fourth quarter, and reduced the Spaniards lead to seven at one point. However, Spain continued their strong shooting until the end of the game, shooting an overall team percentage of 58.8% and won the game by a score of 83-69.

6’9” forward Victor Calver, the tournaments leading scorer contributed 15 points in the win. This was his lowest scoring game of the tournament thus far, showing the dedication that the Canadian defence had to make to slow him down. Javier Vega and Antonio Pantin also scored in double figures for the Spaniards with 16 and 10 points respectively.

Jon House (Guelph, ON) was the final Canadian player to score in double figures with 10 points. Brittain led the Canadian side with 8 rebounds, who were out-rebounded by a margin of 40-31.

The Canadians will continue the round of 12 again tomorrow, July 17 against Korea at 3:45 pm local time. They will take the court again on July 18 against Argentina at 8:30 pm local time to end the round of 12 action. If Canada fares well in these games, they have a chance to move on to the quarter final round which will begin on July 20. They are currently guaranteed a top 12 finish, and will be looking to move up these rankings in their final games.

Re: SDSU forward playing against the world (Kai)

Canada Handles Korea; Needs win over Argentina tomorrow to advance

6'6" Kai Williams (Regina, SK) keyed a game-deciding 13-1 run midway through the 3rd quarter with a dunk and an "and 1", part of his game high efforts of 27 points and 12 rebounds, as Canada kept their quarter-final hopes alive with a solid 99-83 victory over the three-point happy Koreans. Williams, who had 23 of his 27 points after halftime, continually got free inside and on the offensive glass to energize Canada after Korea had extended a 3 point lead to 9 at 57-48 with 3 minutes gone in the third quarter. Canada then outscored the Koreans 51-26 the rest of the way with Williams, 6'2" Devoe Joseph (16 points/7 rebounds/3 assists) and bigs 6'11" Max Zuyderhoff-Craig (9 points/6 rebounds) and 6'9" Maurice Walker (9 points/3 rebounds) providing support. Canada outrebounded the Koreans 56-37 including 25 offensive rebounds and shot 52.6% from the field. The Koreans let it fly from beyond the 3 point line, going 13-42 from downtown.

Canada jumped out to an early 17-8 as Walker scored 4 straight points inside on a tip-in and layup and later 6'5" Alwayne Bigby had 4 consecutive points with the Canadians dominating inside and it appeared the route was on. However Korea went on a 7-0 run of their own and the teams basically traded baskets until a late 3 gave the Koreans a 45-42 halftime lead. Korea then began the second half on an 8-3 run but then Williams led the game-turning sequence with a dunk and a layup. Still, Canada led only 70-67 after 3 when a late Korea three got them back. But Canada scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter and 6'7" Boris Bakovic (8 points, 7 rebounds) slammed home a feed from 6'1" Corey Joseph (8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) to cap another 13-2 run to give Canada a 14 point lead with 3 minutes remaining.

Canada now needs some help just to get themselves into a do-or-die situation tomorrow against Argentina. Canada needs an Australia victory later today over Argentina and then must knock off the Argentinians themselves to qualify for the quarter-final round. One other scenario in which Canada would qualify would be to defeat Argentina and then hope that Turkey loses to Spain today and then Korea tomorrow. If both Turkey and Argentina win later today, Canada would be eliminated from contention for a spot in the quarter-finals and be relegated to play for positions 9 through 12.

Time to market Kai Williams to the casual jackrabbit fan. This kid is going to be even more impressive this year than last. I hope he is ready to take on a leadership role with this team.

I think Kai will be a leader next year, I have seen such a difference in him since he came home...not that I have seen too much of him, he has been gone most of the time working out or training I have seen him eating quite a bit

anyway here is the latest update from the cis blog i visit.

CANADA UPDATE: The coaching staff inserted 6'6" Kai Williams (Regina, SK) into the starting lineup for the past 2 games and Williams has flourished scoring 48 points and grabbing 17 rebounds including several big baskets down the stretch vs. Korea. 6'2" Devoe Joseph remains among the leading scorers at the tournament with 21.8 ppg, currently sitting second behind Australia's Andrew Ogilvy. 6'7" Boris Bakovic (Ryerson University), the OUA Rookie-of-the-Year this past season, has started all 5 games for Canada and has averaged 9.4 ppg and 6.8 rpg in 25 mpg.
