I should add. It's really important Doug stays on the court and doesn't pick up some stupid fouls.

And in the For What It's Worth department:

Providence is #49 in the KenPom rankings, SDSU is 71.
Providence is #35 in the Sagarin rankings, SDSU is 75.

As a partial explanation for that:

The Big East was jam-packed with teams from 30-50 in the Sagarin ratings (6 of the 11 teams). The worst Big East team according to Sagarin was Georgetown (#145); NDSU was 150, ORU was 152.

There are 358 D-I basketball teams. The Summit was overloaded (if that's the right term) with sub-300 Sagarin rating teams (4 of 10). The bottom of the Summit (as I'm sure many have noticed) is B-A-D BAD. The top is anywhere from pretty good (SDSU) to middlin' (NDSU, ORU, USD, KC, WIU).

probably the NUMBER ONE key to the game!

Doug may have some trouble guarding a big with some heft. but he has generally guarded just fine. he just cannot pick up fouls gambling for steals, etc..

but i think it is going to be at least equally difficult for their bulky big to handle Doug and if they have to help too much..... well that usually works pretty good

If Doug plays 30ish minutes and does his normalish thing including drawing fouls as well as anyone in the country, our chances go up a LOT

The Vegas line is still -2. Those tend to be pretty close more often than not.

I'm not expecting a win, but I expect us to be competitive with a chance to win. We will need to shoot well from 3 and Luke Appel playing is also going to be crucial for our depth down low.
The friars are playing the Rodney Dangerfield card more lately. How could there be such a close line(-2) with the 4 seed against the 13 seed as they continue to look toward Iowa. There are a fair amount of the posts highlighting the size and athleticism of the friars. The friars did miss 3 games(Creighton, Seton Hall, & UConn) during Covid protocol during the conference. The SDSU coaching staff ought to approach for a game next year in Brookings since they must not like to spend nights on the road. They played home games only OOC outside of a tournament early. They lost 2 games OOC on neutral court and 3 games lost in conference(1 home and 2 away & 1 Big East tourney game neutral). This is the P5 entitlement to host home games OOC. The last NCAA victory for the friars was against USC in 2016. They lost in 2017 & 2018 in more recent trips. This team for the friars is loaded with experience and transfers. They have some basis for confidence as they sport 5 grad students, 2 seniors, & 1 R-Jr. matched against some smaller skinny Midwestern kids. Go Jacks!!
Best to remember these are kids and they are doing everything they can to entertain us, be scholars, and all in all be great humans. Jackedforlife

Recall that Arians guarded the 4 as a freshman starter.

Easiest explanation is that SDSU was under-seeded and/or Providence was over-seeded. Personally, I'm not complaining much, as the 12-13 seeds are optimal from our point of view, as that puts us against the 4 and 5 seeds (in whatever order) rather than the probability of a second round game running into a #1, 2, or 3 in the other quads of the bracket if a) we get seeded 14-15-16 or b) we somehow enter an alternate universe where an 11 or better seed is possible to attain for a Summit League team.

there is just NOT a whole lot we can do about our SOS. i really hope somehow we can start to get home and home with Big Sky, MVC and HORIZON teams, but it just seems that other mid majors want NOTHING to do with Frost arena. maybe they should look and see that montana has come in twice and won

all a team can do is play the teams in front of them and i think we have done that obviously very well this year with probably 2 exceptions. i am going to guess that almost every other team in the tournament had more than two games this year where they were OFF their game. the jacks have been remarkably consistent

i think this is a case where things like our SOS have caused the rankings to be WRONG. i am not saying we beat them 7 outta 10 or something. i have been feeling like somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.5 outta 10

but you know the folks in Vegas are absolute experts at picking these things so that they do NOT lose money and they are looking at a team playing pretty close to home against a team coming half way across the country and picking the home team as 2 point favorites

i still feel like 3.5 out of 10 feels correct to me, but vegas knows a LOT LOT LOT more about these things than i do and they are saying these two teams are basically even

YES started at the 4 all year AND the following year he was the point guard for this team the whole year!

he is SO underrated as an all around player and definitely underrated as a defender. last week after the NDSU game almost every player interviewed and Hendo talked about charley being overlooked. AA cannot even get mentioned for being overlooked)) haha he might be the BEST player we have ever had who gets absolutely no attention

What you're saying is that AA is POY on the All-Incognito Team?

i am not saying this to be cocky about the upcoming game

i am commenting strictly on the scheduling challenge. NO WAY they would come to brookings next year or any year. and i understand that. i understand that a P5 has ZERO upside for coming to brookings!! i just wish we could get other GOOD mid majors to come and do home and home contracts with us

but as far as the Friars i will go a step further, not only would they not come to Frost next year, i venture there is ALMOST ZERO chance they would give us a game at their place. BIG schools do NOT want to lose OOC games to anyone, let alone a little school from south dakota.

we are stuck in the middle, at this juncture. we are TOO GOOD for teams to want to take a chance to lose to us! BUT we are not yet good enough where a big team can count losing to us as a GOOD ENOUGH loss

                        • I'll probably regret saying this, but Providence's size might actually help us. Because they have to match up with us too.

Going against someone like Texas, who is basically our size...would be tough.

Doug is very hard for BIG dudes to cover, and all our guards can penetrate and finish. and they can all shoot.

Thats not good. The experts never pick the correct cinderalla team. Id rather go in under the radar. Dont need to give The friars more motivation.

That does not make me happy. I'd rather sneak up on people--to the extent we can, any way.
