    Re: Overview and Random Thoughts

It's obvious the over-riding consensus here is to repeal and replace the zone defense. But just as in that other thing people want to do this with, the devil is in the details. So you are on the coaching staff - what starting lineup is best equipped to play man to man, and at what positions ? Who is in the rotation coming off the bench ? What concerns do you have, if any, with playing man defense ? My biggest concern, especially if Theisen is out for an extended period, is who is going to defense big post players when Daum takes his normal rests, or if he has to sit for an extended period because of foul trouble. I agree the zone leaves much to be desired, and I'm not posting this to be a smart a**. I'm just interested in what people see as solutions, beyond simply "quit playing zone".

I think we need to depend on Severyn, Dykman, Hess, or Telly to step up and fill that role. They are undersized but Tony Fiegan was also undersized and he was able to defend down low. Gotta be tough. Undoubtedly we will have to help by running double teams at times, but man to man is still a team defense.

We are currently rated #331 (out of 351) in defensive efficiency. Over the last 3 games, we are the 3rd worst in the country (ORU is actually 2nd worst). We are also the 3rd worst team in the country in points allowed per game over the last 3 games. We are #318 in points allowed in the 2nd half. We are #351 (out of 351) in points from 3 allowed per game. We are also #351 in percentage of points scored from 3 (by nearly 4% over #350).

So you think really ANY solution to this is worse than what we are seeing now? We quite frankly have a number of stats that we couldn't possibly be any worse at! I would honestly take anybody on this team guarding anybody on the other team, because that isn't happening right now.

I would like to see what Dykman can do. He was Mr. Basketball in Nebraska. He might not have the down low post moves of Theisen(not the same body type) or the offensive game of Daum(who does) but can he score some, play defense and rebound? I guess they have been in every game so you don't want to clear the bench but give him a few meaningful minutes to see what he can do. If Dykman played against Oral Roberts, Severyn wouldn't have got in. I like to see him get some playing time, too. He doesn't have the skills of most of the players soon the team but he seems to "want it more".
I would like to know out of the 4 transfers who didn't play man to man where they were last season? You know that all the players that were here played a lot of it. Of course, that doesn't include Flatten because he didn't play. I think El Darwich might be only player on the team that hasn't played much man to man.

Go to man and make each player earn his spot. You don't defend and rebound you don't play. Wait, where have I heard that before??

A new line of thought for the observation of new coaches in Brookings. Please do not assume I am against the new staff. If you do that , I will call you a fool and stupid. Take a look around the league. Smith comes into Vermillion and takes 3 years to bring the yotes to a decent situation in 2016-17. Of course the season for the league is young, that could change some. Also remember that Smith had something that might be considered a bare cupboard for D1 talent. Richman comes to the head job in Fargo and the Bison continue to reach the final game of the SLT and finish as low as 4th place regular season. Jon Coffman takes over Ft Wayne and goes 16-15 and then 24-10. The most relevant test is Denver who changed the most as they left the Princeton offense to play "regular" basketball. Last year Denver was 8-5 OOC and this year was 8-5 without weighting SOS. That is using the same old players that were available from Joe Scott. Some of these coaches were elevated and knew that players. Some are not in that category. It is still my contention that the coaches need to coach outside their comfort "zone" to adapt their preconceived notion of a game plan and combine the current ingredients to a more successful level. When the record is 2-10 in conference, it might be too late to make the adjustments. The premise of the current decision is beginning to look futile. However, 3-5 wins in a row will prove me incorrect. Please.

Awfully familiar has a season record of 11-7. Got blew out at Wisconsin Green Bay. They lost by nearly 20 pts. So who do you suppose on Wright State is not rebounding? Winning on the road?? Not so easy in the Horizon League.

Will Severyn ever see playing time again?
When you put on that jersey, the name on the front is more important than the name on the back.

He played a fair bit last night including important minutes down the stretch.

Shocked that there are still some defending Otz. What has happened to my fellow South Dakotans?
We never tolerated losing or mediocrity. Even at the high school level we expected coaches to win. Now we've got people preaching patience?
Hard to understand when the team has fallen this far this fast.

Not that this season is over, but next year is still quite concerning. We are graduating our point guard and our main three point shooter at the guard position. While we do have a JUCO transfer coming, he can't play 48 minutes every game. With the amount of freshmen coming in we will be very young next year or TJ we play have to rely on people he hasn't looked much this year. I wonder if some of the playing decisions aren't designed to encourage attrition so we can reload with JUCO talent?

Some dont want jucos but if tj can get the right ones I think that's the route you have to go to give your incoming class time to get experience without jeopardizing record etc. deondre was a great juco and hopefully we can land one or two more like him.

I guess what you are saying is Ryan Miller for HC. I for one offer I dont think so.

Actually, losing and less-than-mediocrity was tolerated for several years with Nagy during the conversion to D-1, when the women were lighting the court on fire and the men were borrowing football players to fill out the roster and losing to teams like NJIT. You may not have been on the board at that time.
