Re: GDT: Jackrabbits vs Bison
Here's my thought process on this. On the game alone last night as a stand alone game, I'm viciously disappointed in the loss. The last team I wanted to end our home streak was NDSU, especially after all the times they have ended our seasons in football in the playoffs. Makes this game an extremely bitter pill to swallow. The defense was bad, absolutely. I remember worrying at halftime about it not being a matter of if NDSU would start making shots, but when. That sucked. The other thing that shocked me was deep into the second half we didn't have a single player in double digits for points besides Daum. That's not a winning formula, and to me shows that we probably don't have as good of a team as we thought to start the year from a talent perspective.
Overall I think some people need to seriously pump the brakes on throwing Otz under the bus as a bad hire already. The reality is we had to replace our entire front court with some juco guys we got late due to when Otz was hired. When you get late additions like that you aren't going to be getting a bunch of studs. The second place prediction was way over what we should have been predicted at and everyone came in with high expectations, which is a good thing when it comes to where SDSU has come as a program. However it's also a bad thing when it comes to getting our first new coach in one of the big 3 sports in 15-20 years. Personally after the first couple of games I let go of any high expectations and really want to see improvement to see if Otz can develop guys and get them to buy in. Next year and the year after are the seasons that I will use to judge whether or not it was a bad hire. It's very possible Otz was the wrong guy to pick, but if you look at most any level of sports the program's that aren't successful are the ones with a quick trigger on firing coaches. NDSU doesn't have their run of 5 straight if they fired Bohl after his 3-8 season. This year looks to be a mediocre at best year, and if we manage to become a team that makes a run at the NCAA tourney at the end of the year it's gravy. The team has improved, and even though the team isn't becoming the type of team many here want it to look like, it is getting better.
As far as the zone goes, if Otz caves and runs it due to fan pressure I think that's a bad sign instead of a good one. A coach needs to do what he believes is right for the team and weather the storm of whatever comes while he tries to get to what he envisions. If he starts to work man to man in cause he feels it is best for the team then great. I am worried he is sticking entirely to zone because he's being stubborn though. One thing missed I think in our zone isn't so much the direct affect of points allowed, but a little deeper. When we have made more free throws than our opponents have attempted, it's pretty fair to say we have won a lot of our games due to our free throws. The zone is a big part of the discrepancy in that I feel, even not being a basketball mind in the slightest. It could be that Otz looks at that and sees what we are capable of on offense and has decided that we give up about the same number of points per game in zone as man, but get a huge swing in points off of free throws and sees that as our best way to get wins. Kind of goes back to having nobody but Daum have any offensive production. If he doesn't see the offensive talent necessary to match up man to man and have even free throw attempts, he could be using the zone to manufacture a built in offensive advantage to give us a lift against some teams. Hell I could be way off on that, but it's something to ponder perhaps.
Anyways, I think my general attitude is different because I'm much more of an intense football fan compared to basketball, and many on here are reversed. It's what leads to people telling me to chill out during football season and then the roles being reversed in basketball season. Mix in the way football ended, the injuries to the women's team severely hampering their outlook, and you end up with a frustrated fanbase who is unleashing that frustration on something new and underperforming their expectations. The only part that bothers me is the rush to throw in the towel on a coach reeks of the NDSU fan mentality on bisonville.
Oh, and if this is TLR my bad.
