It's hardly a defense at all, really. Any team, as has been proven game after game, can get WIDE open 3's every possession. Every single possession. NDSU, a bad shooting team besides Jacobson, made 13 3's tonight. Three off their school record. UNI, Murray State, and Wichita State all broke their school 3 point records.

I'm just at a pure loss. The boys can play as hard as they possibly can on defense, but it doesn't really matter. The zone is not a winning formula. There is a reason only one team in the nation runs full time zone (Syracuse). It doesn't work effectively. I'm just seriously not exaggerating when I say that literally EVERY possession, NDSU could've/did get a wide open look. The zone is 90% dependent on how the other team is shooting.

In regards to the bad display of man-to-man defense to start the season, that can actually be corrected. There are things to fix and ways to improve man-to-man. If Otz doesn't think he can get them to play better man D than they were, then he either, 1) Is doubting his players' athleticism or 2) Doesn't think he can coach them up effectively, which is quite concerning.

And yes, the offense went into a huge lull in the second half. But they shouldn't have to be perfect every game to make up for a horrific defense. The offense flows WAY better than the beginning of the year, and they are absolutely talented enough on offense to win the Summit League.

Finally, I'd love to stand behind Otz (I really do like the offense right now and think he's a good guy) and believe in them like he asked the fans to do in the postgame. But I'm really struggling to do that when a very, very obvious deficiency is not being corrected. Especially when GA tickets are $25 freakin dollars (Crazy, stupid expensive). Not playing even a little bit of man-to-man defense is asinine. Especially when UNI has made 473 threes against you in one game. Also, Tevin was shadowing Jacobson to start the game and I don't think they did that at all in the second half. Weird.

    Rant over.
A very good post. You know more about the game then most of us. This is not first loss to NDSU, nor the last one.

Good first post, welcome to the board!

Our weakness has been exposed. Teams are going to shoot threes until they make enough to beat us. Once in awhile a team will have a bad shooting night, but inability to stop 3 point shooting is a recipe for a bad season in the modern game of basketball. The coaches need to get our defense figured out pronto.

You are barking up the wrong tree complaining about ticket prices. As many here will tell you, spending over a hundred dollars to take your family to a basketball game is no big deal. Brace yourself for $40 GA tickets in a renovated Frost.

199 3-pointers given up in 16 games...that would be almost 38 points per game.

A 27 point swing in a little over 14 minutes is just absurd...to our rival nonetheless. I'm still at a loss the next morning. Wins in conference are hard, especially on the road. If this team can't protect home court this year, it will get out of hand in a hurry. A chance to right the ship against our other big rival on Sat. at home. Lose that one and...

It's one game. We got spanked by UND at home and then we went there and won by 17. It's one game...lots of season to figure things out. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we pulled out the win, but we'll see how the two teams are doing come tournament time. Could be completely different teams out there.

Kind of apples to oranges. UND led the entire way when they beat you at home...NDSU didn't have an epic collapse. Also, you guys play that thing called defense.

Yes, there were shortcomings on defense, but the Jacks' offense didn't do much the second half. I think that should be the real concern. Telly and Hess, in particular, need to be more consistent scoring threats. Daum can't carry the scoring load all the time. King is scrappy and is great at driving to the hoop, but he doesn't command much respect as an outside shooter. I'd like to see Flatten get more minutes. It was just one game, but the 27-point turnaround made it a very painful loss.

Bison make any of their WIDE OPEN 3's in the first half they would have won by 30. Defense has to get better or this team will be battling to make the SLT.

You haven't followed us at all have you? It's not one game. Our defense is literally one of the worst in the country.

It's a mentality. When you play zone all the time as a defender you become lazy. Coach seems committed to it. I guess we just need to get used to giving up 30 points or more per game from the 3 point line.

Meh, I don't get too worked up about what happens at the beginning of the season. The only thing that matters is what happens in the tournament. I'm not terribly excited about the product NDSU has out on the court right now...but I'm hoping they improve and have a chance in the tournament.

But they didn't. I understand the defense is terrible most of the time but if the offense shows up even a little bit for that 10 min stretch in the second half where they didn't think they needed to play this conversation would have a very different tone. You can't go scoreless for 5 min and score 7 or whatever it was the next 5 min and expect to win regardless of the defense.

If telly and Hess make half the 3 they missed we probably would've won the game.

Amazing how I flew right over the comment about price of tickets. It is sticker shock for those casual fans. None-the-less I did appreciate the other comments.

Looks like we are still paying for that October upset in football. That's what I noticed about this game. Having down 15 at half and then losing is not a good sign of things to come. Oh well, I suspect Otz will be given enough rope to land his own recruits, who will win against NDSU.

Werner can be a beast out there. He was not to be pushed around by Daum. I know this will upset some of my fellow Jack fans, but the guy did stand his ground.
