  • Re: Idaho

    82-77 Idaho. Final.

Idaho throws up 2 threes in the final minute and they go in, however the Jacks lost the game in the first half.

This is a bad loss to an inferior team, IMO.

Game over. We are what we are...at least until later in the season...I hope.

This. Idaho isn't likely to win 10 games this year. Hope this isn't an indication of what's to come.

It plagues the basketball team as much as the football team, I'm afraid.

Frustrating loss. Should have won this one, even with the poor start.

Still a young team. 4 freshman played a lot of minutes in this game. While disappointed with the outcome, still a long ways from hitting the panic button.

The Jacks can't start off in the hole every game and then have to claw back. This team has some studs. They need to play with more confidence from the start.

Have to remember Nagy said this season is going to be played in 3 portions.

                1. Without Marshall
                2. OOC with Marshall
                3. Conference

The team is 2 games in. They have bad lapses but there also been some bright spots (Flatten for example). The goal is to be playing solid by the time the conference portion of the season starts up because that is the only thing that matters. All the ooc games are used for seeding which going into this season it was looking like a 13/14 seed for anyone in the conference imo. To much talent was lost last year in the league. I still don't know what to expect out of ORU right now but IPFW, Denver, WIU, NDSU, and USD have not been impressive. I think SDSU is still in great shape. No reason to overreact. Yes, this is a bad loss but this isn't the whole SDSU team. Marshall will make a HUGE difference. Bring on UND!

I think that's why it's so frustrating. There aren't any bad players in the deep rotation and several very good looking young players. Obviously, this is going to take some time to gel. There is a ton of potential there and maybe they'll take a step forward vs. UND. It's hard to watch a Nagy team fail to play D and rebound, though.

Wake me up when our PG can play. Until then, it looks like ANY win we can get is a bonus.

While that's an issue our offense is basically a motion offense 100% of the time. I'd like to see some more sets to get some easier looks. It just seems everything is so difficult due to a lack of guard who can penetrate and dish. Doesn't have to be the PG who penetrates so this can't all fall on one person. Additionally, the picks set by our bigs on the perimeter are nearly 100% of the time pointless. No pick and pop or rolls just picks so the guy dribbling the ball can dribble some more. Hard to watch.

Excellent point. Our screens never lead to anything, just more passing and dribbling on the perimeter. The offense looked disjointed.

                          Disappointing loss? sure.

                          Surprising? nope.

Lots and lots of new moving pieces out there.

I think we'll see the team take some lumps early this year, and it's all going to be about how they respond to it.

I'll go out on a limb here and say, it may actually end up being better for this team in the long run, to have lost these first two games rather than start 2-0.

Things to learn, rotations to figure out, etc, etc... All I hope is that they are playing tough at the end of the season. Win the conference tournament, and you're in the dance.

It sounded like Parks had a good game against Idaho in terms of driving to the hoop, creating shots for himself and playing defense. Don't know about his passing or creating shots for others. The Jacks problems, to this point, seem more widespread and fundamental than point guard play. They're bound to get better.

Not a comment on Parks per se, but our on ball defense from the guard position is a big growth area. A lot of "ole" defense last night. Some could have benefited from a red cape.

Reminded me of watching NDSU a few years ago. TONS of dribbling. Timing was never quite right on the offensive side to consistently win games, but the talent was obvious.

It looks to me like we have some nice pieces. Just a matter of figuring out how to play together. I really hope we can keep the longer rotation of players, it will pay big dividends down the road with all the young players we have. Flatten looks, runs, shoots, etc like a basketball player. He could have a very special career if given the right opportunities, IMO.
