The athlete knows this full well when enrolling in a school knowing that they are being paid to go to school for their ATHLETIC ABILITY.

This happens ALL THE TIME in Division 1 athletics. Because of how bad not renewing a scholarship sounds, it is rarely called that or needed. Typically, for a player that is not good enough to remain on the roster, the coach will sit them down and essentially tell them that there are no minutes to be had for said player moving forward. That player will continue to be isolated from the rest of the team in practices, etc., until said player finally decides it is a waste of time (and their career) for them to remain on the team. Then comes the transfer, which saves face for both the university and the player.

I understand the premise behind committing to a student for 4 years, but that is not how the real world works. Some schools will keep a player under scholarship if a career-ending injury occurs while playing the sport, but not always.

You can't complain about how our coaches are divvying up scholarships, and then turn around and complain about the lack of talent on our roster. It's like complaining what the cook makes when the cook is not allowed to choose the ingredients. Ya'll complain about our programs not taking the next step, but then turn around and criticize the coaches for doing what it takes to help take that next step.

This is also a good tie-in to oversigning recruits in football. If you think "pulling a scholarship" is bad, just Google "SEC football oversigning" and you'll really learn how it works in big-boy D1 athletics.
I don't disagree with what you're saying here, but it does seem interesting that it's just expected a coach should be able to assess and adjust rosters on a yearly basis, yet if a player decided to leave a team in the middle of his career at a certain school, it can end up being a major issue (depending on the player, obviously, but particularly if the player is a key part of the lineup).

So, if I am following your comments, you don't see a problem w/ "not renewing a scholarship"? Or did I misinterpret what you said?

I remember awhile back (can't find the posts) there was some discussion about James Rader's scholarship not being renewed and some fans not being happy w/ Coach Nagy.

"Pulling a scholarship..."; "Not renewing a scholarship..."; "Sitting down with a player to discuss next years minutes (or lack thereof)..." are just different ways to word the same damn thing. As of now, Marshall has to pay his own way next year. I wonder if a scholarship will open up

Edit: Probably what happened with Prince, honestly.[/QUOTE]

Bingo! And wasn't it nice that Prince deciding to transfer coincidentally freed up a scholarship for Cody Larsen.
Message for the youth: “Set your goals high and work for them, because if you set your goals where they should be, it’s going to require a lot of hard work. And even if you don’t achieve them, it shows longevity, and it shows commitment. And those are both things you need for the rest of your life,” Tony Fiegen

No, I do not see a problem with it - in most cases. I'm a little more sympathetic to the career-ending injury scenario, but universities typically find a way to move that scholarship to a non-athletic scholarship.

I'm becoming more and more of a win at all costs type of person (within NCAA regulations and the law, of course). As I've stated before, I'd gladly sacrifice some GPA points for more wins. We complain about not beating NDSU in football, but then clap and cheer when Stig refuses to offer players who immediately turn around and go play for the Bison.

I fully admit to looking at this from the point of a fan, not taking into account the feelings/situations of our athletes. I probably treat the athletes more like pieces of meat than actual people. That's on me, but that's the truth.

Can you tell I'm a jaded Notre Dame football fan? That's a discussion for another day. I don't want to turn this into an Academics vs. Athletics discussion. In fact, this discussion could go down so many avenues it is darn near limitless - especially in regards to the obligations of players and coaches.

Edit: And since I believe you are a former player (for which I have admitted to calling a piece of meat), I will at least classify you as "Wagyu Steak".

However, I do not believe that the Jackrabbits are playing the recruits the same way unless there is some behavior problems.
Best to remember these are kids and they are doing everything they can to entertain us, be scholars, and all in all be great humans. Jackedforlife

lol Same. Thats why I think its so important to go see games in person so they are not just figures on a television screen or numbers in a box score etc..

You mean they recruit them on different "grounds" ? For sure. Larson/Marshall are power plays. Jacobson and others of that circumstance are more what was said in SF_Rabbit_Fans post earlier about getting players that are good recruits not necessarily the best players. Both are important.

Complete guess, but I would go with Severyn or Flatten.

Just post his name? I'm not sure what your point is of posting the original statement, knowing that someone would inquire who it is, and then not say who it is.
