    Re: Future of Nagy

I'll toss this into this thread, as it may be (barely) on-topic:

KU's Self is lowest paid of Final Four coaches
    (Kansas City Star)

Self's base salary is a measly $2.5M a year. Dude needs a raise.

LOL at Calipari's $50K academic progress bonus...

Man, he barely makes more than Big Charlie and Weis hasn't even coached a game yet.

However, if Coach Self brings another title back to Lawrence, KU will name a street after him, pay him whatever he wants, and The Wheel will name a burger in his honor.

Just because the general population hasn't heard of Ohio U's head coach doesn't mean he's not a name within the coaching ranks. Read his bio. His pedigree is pretty stout. He's only been a head coach for four years, but his tenure as an assistant is pretty impressive and makes a guy like Nagy pretty easy to look past.
I just wanted to respond to this as well CEA... Groce is a very, very well known name in the coaching ranks and his name is now on par with Shaka Smart or Brad Stevens as far as people knowing it (yes, their run didn't go quite as deep, but it was still impressive). His assistant days @ OSU were going to pay dividends as he is known for a being a tremendous recruiter - the guy who was largely given credit for getting Mike Conley Jr and Greg Oden to OSU.

I'm also not saying Nagy is like Miles in his apparent need to look for the step upward, but you have to believe he would be interested in the challenge right? Nagy is only 45? Many years of coaching left in front of him. A big part of his success is related to Nate Wolters similar to Miles being credited with getting Ben Woodside to NDSU. Both of these recruits helped put their respective schools on the national map and probably open up new recruiting avenues, but that doesn't guarantee long-term success or dancing every year. So far NDSU hasn't been able to get back to the success of 2009 and there is no guarantee SDSU will have the success they did this although next year does look promising again. If you pay attention to NDSU (and the forbidden Bisonville), you would have noticed many fans were/are unhappy with Saul and many were calling for him to be fired only 3 years after the tourney run. Once fans taste success, it becomes somewhat of an expectation. Because of the limitations of the Summit and basically only getting 1 team in each year (we all know an at-large is highly improbable), maybe Nagy would be willing to look at a CSU, where you can have a moderately successful season but still have the opportunity to make the dance. Something tells me though, Nagy enjoys that blue blazer too much to look elsewhere!

Lets hope so. I think Saul is a very good coach and he has got some talent that needs some time to develop. If you caught the press conference after the loss to WIU, he point blank told those guys sitting beside him that they had work to do in the off season. As much as I like Tim Miles, after all he is a SD boy, I think all the stepping stones have worked for him. I dont think he is a better coach then Nagy or Saul Phillips for that matter. If Miles can turn Nebraska around, I will concede he is a better coach than Phillips and Nagy put together. I see the Peter Principle about to yank another guy in Lincoln Ne.

Reading that list brings back bad memories. Mike Dunlap kicked butt when he was at Metro St. He strikes me as a very good candidate for the job.

I'm on record as saying Nagy isn't leaving and that isn't just a hunch.

It's official: Southern Illinois has removed themselves from the Scott Nagy Sweepstakes by hiring no-name coach Barry Hinson.

/really couldn't resist the sarcasm . . . of course, you have to remember that I live in Kansas City, a third of which is in mourning with all the purple flags at half-mast because Frank Martin went to South Carolina, so coaching carousel talk is pretty much par for the course around here . . .

Saw a tweet from Fran Fraschilla, I think, regarding Barry Hinson. Said his team Missouri State team in 2006 was the highest ever RPI team left out of the Big Dance. They were 21 and were left to the NIT. That is nuts.

                  KU will miss him.

Craig Smith the interim coach at CSU has been Miles's right hand man ever since he coached at Mayville. Its hard to believe he will not follow Miles to Lincoln. If Nagy goes to CSU, I think Smith would be an excellent candidate for SDSU.
What about Austin Hansen? I think he would be packing his bags for Ft Collins. Every HC seems to have their assistants and they generally follow the boss.

Like I said, SDSU needs to figure out a way to at least double Nagy's salary in the very near future . . . that is, if the school is serious about being competitive in D-I.

If he's going to leave this year would be a good year to head out. CSU job is open and is one that he'd have a legitimate chance of getting. Especially since it's rumored that Big Sky Conf Montana's Coach Wayne Tinkle is a leading candidate. As much as people would like to say Scott will remain in Brookings due to lifestyle and small town...money talks in college athletics. There is no guarantee that SDSU will make the dance next year and if the opportunity to advance up the ladder to a school and conferece that puts more than one team in the dance presents itself Nagy would bolt. CSU is rumored to be paying 1 Mil+ for new coach. SDSU and USD offer one year contracts and no long term guarantee. Job security and guaranteed money is hard to beat....one can get use to living anywhere when all factors are considered and the salary is trippled. He interviewed for jobs before and had the same athletes on the roster....don't be shocked if he throws his name in the ring this spring.

BTW John Groce is far from a "No-body" coach. He was on staff at NC State under Herb Sendenk along with fellow assistant coaches Sean Miller (Arizona) & Mark Phelps (Drake). He left NC State to join Thad Matta at Xavier and tagged along with Matta to tOSU. Miller was promoted to head coach at Xavier when Matta left. Groce has ties to the Big 10 and was considered one of the top assistant coaches in the country for many years. He turned a non-named Ohio program into a Sweet 16 team. If Illiniois hires him its a great pick. Big time Head Coaches have to start somewhere...ala Billy Donovan (Marshall), Bill Self (Tulsa), Tubby Smith (Tulsa) etc. If Groce gets the Illinois job it's far from someone cashing in on one good season. He's paid his dues and worked hard to earn that challenge.

My impression is that Colorado State may be after bigger game than Nagy. I've been wrong before, though.

And, I think I heard an interview with . . . Scott Drew at Baylor, maybe . . . where he was mentioning that he was on 1-year contracts as well. Surprised the hell out of me at the time.

There are ways to work around the single-year state contract issue, if you're creative enough (such as a subsidiary contract with the Foundation for things like TV show fees, performance bonuses, and early-contract-termination payout clauses; that contract with the Foundation being dependent on the coach being retained by the State from year to year; that kind of thing). And the reality is that all coaches are essentially on single-year contracts--all it takes is one bad year and your coach who just signed that 5-year contract last year might be out on his ear.
