          Re: March Madness SDSU Articles

No article to link, but I was listening to Dan Barreiro on KFAN in Minneapolis via web streaming yesterday and he talked about the Jackrabbits. He actually said that he thinks the Jackrabbits are getting so much upset love in this game that it may work against them. No real analysis, but still a minute of talk on Minneapolis radio doesn't hurt.

Barreiro has a little history, as he interviewed coach Stiegelmeier a couple years back before the Jacks at Gophers football game, and I think still includes the Steve Imming "Touchdown Jackrabbits" soundbyte in his show opening montage.
The Zen philosopher Basha once wrote, 'A flute with no holes, is not a flute. A donut with no hole, is a Danish.'

              Re: March Madness SDSU Articles

Conn's story in Grantland is excellent sportswriting. The unfiltered pep-talk by Griff and the reference to the backup forward taking a leak in the shower makes the reader almost part of the team.

                              Re: March Madness SDSU Articles

Thanks to all posters finding and posting those links. There's no amount of money that could buy the kind of attention the Jackrabbits are receiving right now!

The more I read about our team, the more I think about comments made by NDSU's Saul Phillips a week or two ago. He warned the hoopla and media attention can be a challenge and distraction. The sports-media darlings of the hour (week?) right now are the Jackrabbits. It has to be difficult to stay focused. And if we beat Baylor, the attention will only get worse. Fortunately, our guys are smart -- academic smart -- and that helps a lot in avoiding the lure of the bright lights and microphones. Ever since the Washington win when the national press pulled out the bandwagon and started climbing aboard, our guys have had a season-long and gradual introduction to the national spotlight. But now the spotlight is narrowly focused on the denizens of Frost Arena like its never been focused for the men, at least in recent memory.

Baylor's been there, done that. Advantage Baylor. The media attention for Baylor's great athletes is taken in stride.

This year the chatter is about SDSU: will the Jackrabbits be the VCU or George Mason of the tourney? There was a time when Gonzaga held that spot, Butler too. Gonzaga's been there too much -- no Cinderella story there. Butler: a great story but no longer Cinderella. The media wants Cinderella.

Grantland is ESPN's Bill Simmons' website that is going to be a year old. Simmons is probably the most read sports writer on the internet and he created the site to be about pop culture and sports. Our feature is the main story up on the site now. Freaking awesome.
Saw and posted the article this morning before class without reading it. I finally read it. Wow. That was really, really, really good. I did not expect something that detailed or of that length. Loved the whole thing, but my favorite was probably this description of Wolters. Probably the best description of Wolters that I have ever read.

Because he is white and doe-eyed with few defined muscles, Wolters gets tagged with labels like "sneaky quick" and "deceptively athletic." And because he is quiet and reserved, he is often called "humble." He may not boast or preen, but there is little humility in Wolters' game. He plays with a confidence that borders on reckless, approaching each possession with the knowledge that he can blow by you or shoot over you. He is both bulldozing and balletic, running directly at defenders until they stumble, freeze, or simply move out of his way. When a team spreads its defense to defend shooters, like IUPUI does tonight, Wolters darts through the gaps and assumes total control.
