will the Jackrabbits be the VCU or George Mason of the tourney?QUOTE]

I would like to think that SDSU will be the Jackrabbits of this tourney. We can go on a run, and next year ask who will be the next SDSU......and they can respond with another SDSU run........and not san diego state either. The good guys in jackrabbit logos.

Those things were HIDEOUS! Last time I checked 1980's lime green was not one of their school colors. MC Hammer loved them though.

              Re: March Madness SDSU Articles

As an Augie fan, it just about broke my heart reading this section:

A native of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Wolters didn't receive a Division I scholarship offer until SDSU approached him just before his senior year. Although he later picked up an offer from Colorado State, Wolters nearly chose to play at Division II Augustana College. "I always thought I was a D-II guy," he says now. "I just didn't see myself as a Division I player." Now a junior, Wolters is eighth in the nation in scoring, with 21.3 points per game. He's also 16th in the country in assists and second in the conference in steals. Nagy says he regularly fields calls from "NBA people" about his star, and another Summit League coach told reporters he'd recently discussed Wolters with Celtics general manager Danny Ainge.
On the one hand, it was nice getting a shout out ourselves. On the other hand, having it reiterated in a major news outlet like Grantland that we were were that close to getting Nate is just gut-wrenching.

Then, reading this section about Coach Hansen was almost as much of a killer:

As a coach, he's responsible for luring the best player the school has ever had. When Wolters was a senior in high school, Nagy stopped recruiting him after Wolters refused to sign during the early signing period. Unbeknownst to Nagy, Hansen kept in touch with Wolters, pretending to scout other players but talking to Wolters instead. Nagy didn't talk to Wolters from October to March of that year, but by the time the spring signing period arrived, Hansen had convinced the future star to come to Brookings.
To think Nagy had given up on Wolters so completely just makes the fact that SDSU still snagged him even harder to digest.

This has been discussed to death over on the probably-never-read-anymore-by-Jackrabbit-fans D2 Message Board, but, like I said, it kills me as an Augie fan every time I see yet ANOTHER D1 analyst talking about how complete a player Nate is and how bright his future is. Obviously I wish him no ill will or anything at ALL like that, as he seems like a great kid and has earned every ounce of praise he receives. It's just hard not to imagine what life would've been like as an Augie fan with him and Cody Schilling side-by-side for three years.

I couldn't find this posted elsewhere, apologize if it is, but this is pure poetry. Access, writing, analysis - unbelievable. Shows why March Madness is about dreams and not expectations. Probably the best thing I've read on Cindarellas, and it's about the Jacks. You'll respect a lot of people a lot more after this one...

Yeah, I guess not. More than anything, I just thought it was interesting seeing how it has all been talked about being an Augie fan. Probably shouldn't have expected much as far as a response goes.

I thought it was an interesting perspective. I can't imagine the things he would have done in an Augie uniform. He would have wreaked havoc in D2.

I thought the exact same thing. It adds to the mystique of Nate Wolters and makes his success in D1 all the more interesting/exciting. And to think he didn't think of himself as a D1 player makes it even better as a Jacks fan to watch his current success in D1 fun to watch. Also, yes he would have absolutely destroyed D2. If I was an Augie fan, I would have thought the exact same thing as MrAugustana.

Much obliged, fellas. That's sort of what I was going for but was afraid I didn't convey that message as a result of my whining/sorrow. Either way, as I mentioned, it was nice to see Augie get a shout-out in the story.

It's also interesting that so much of the SDSU message board recruiting talk here focuses on "We need to be getting every D1-caliber kid from the area no matter what." Meanwhile there are guys like Wolters (who didn't even think he'd be going D1 as of 3+ years ago) who can end up coming in and completely changing the face of the Jackrabbit program.

Obviously to build and then maintain success, SDSU will need to start consistently getting those D1 caliber players as the program continues to develop, but I do find it interesting when I read through the recruiting threads to think about what people would've thought/said about a player like Wolters at this stage in the program's success (where the only other teams recruiting him were D2 Augie and St. Cloud and a late, late offer from Colorado State). I'd imagine a lot of fans on here would've talked about needing to get better recruits rather than competing against the D2s for players, but it seemed to have worked out in the case of Wolters.

Then again, Nate's a pretty special player.

Anyway, sorry for getting a little off-topic on this thread. Probably not the place to be discussing recruiting. At least this post started in relation to the Grantland article...
