  • Jacks Getting Some Respect

We are all hoping the Jacks run the table in Sioux Falls and make the Big Dance. But if they don't,they are getting some love at nitology.com. They predict the Jacks to be a #2 seed, playing #7 Pitt in the first round. That's one way to get a Big East team into Frost !

If you click through to the bracket, you find the highly entertaining possibility that Minnesota may have to come to Frost Arena, too. Wouldn't that be something?

With Mbakwe out,and the Gophers playing the way they have been recently, the outcome would be way different in the rematch.

Pitt at a sold out Frost Arena. Potential matchup with Tubby and the Gophs or New Mexico St. at a sold out Frost Arena. Wow.

I know these are just projections, so this may not be the case, but hypothetical question: Would this scenario be potentailly better for the program, player experience, and fan experience than a 1 and done showing in the NCAA's in a regional out west or out east?

I was thinking the same thing, but I would much rather win the Summit tournament.

Nope. But a great consolation prize. It is better for the program to make the Big Dance. Way more exposure with the Big Tourney, that is why it is the Big Dance

Program wise it's no contest- the Big Dance gives national exposure and credibility that can't be matched. I would also bet that the players would take a one-and-done NCAA appearance over anything else. Fan wise , I remember being in Frost for those sold out WNIT games, and it was a great experience that gained the Jacks a lot of new fans. But watching the Jacks in the NCAA's,even if only on TV,would be great.

Would the Gophers drop out the the NIT instead of coming to South Dakota?

                    Re: Jacks Getting Some Respect

Best case scenario for this year (for SDSU and the Summit League, anyway; not necessarily for Oral Roberts):

SDSU wins the automatic bid, ORU sneaks in with an at-large somehow (yeah, yeah, I know, slim-to-none) and one or both pull off a first-round upset. That gives three or four NCAA tournament "units" to the Summit (instead of just the one the Summit gets for the single automatic qualifier) for the next six years. (And, adding further insult to injury, ORU would have to leave its unit(s) with the Summit since the units are paid to the conference, not the school).

Since an NCAA men's tournament unit is worth around $220,000 (or, in a nine-team league, about $24,400 per school per unit) that would represent a nice little going away present for the Summit from ORU, I think.

(According to this NYT article, an NIT unit is $14,000).

But the prospect of an extra home game or two for SDSU in the NIT isn't too bad, as consolation prizes go, I guess. But why not dream big?

I would guess that would be a distinct possibility.

Not to be a party-pooper, but since ORU won the regular season title, wouldn't that make us ineligible for the NIT? I thought the rules were that the NIT would only take regular-season champions that don't make the Big Dance. Or am I mistaken?

They are the only ones that get automatic selection. The NIT chooses to fill the remaining slots in whatever way they want/choose.

That is the "I" in NIT - Invitation.

Nope, that's WNIT. Men's NIT takes the 32 "next best" teams after the 31 conference champions and the 37 at-large teams go to the NCAA--so between the NIT and the NCAA, in theory, the best 69 non-conference-tournament winners go to one of the two NCAA-sponsored post-season tournaments.

SDSU's RPI as of today is 61 so the Jacks are definitely in the mix for the NIT they don't win the Summit League tournament (if they don't stub their toes, that is).
