    Re: USD Week

I thing that will bug me is, I don't get how inconsistant the student support is. I am not talking about just now, and I understand the transition hurt. When I was in college starting in 2000, I was at every basketball game mens or womens regardless who we were playing. Most student only showed up for the USD game which if they would come to every game could realize it could be a fun thing every week. As many students live on campus, there is no reason the student section shouldn't be mostly packed everygame. I know there are a handfull that are there pretty consistantly, but that always bugged me when I was a student. I am glad they will be there tonight, but when they have a chance to make most every game....That said I don't make every game either but try to make a few a year and have attended every session of every summit league game since it has been in SF.

Trying to figure out student support is a tough topic and literally a crap shoot. Back in my student days, it was so different. There were maybe six males to every female. The games on Saturday night, a bunch of guys would dress fit to kill in business suits, neckties, over coats and come to the game. The BB game was the literally the only game in town, and what else would there be to do other than soak up a few 3.2 beers at Horts, or Jims Place. Why the fancy dress?

Why because they thought their chances of getting a dance at the aftergame dance was better if they dressed like a gentleman. Student after game dances at the Union Ballroom were well attended in my day. If you see some of the photos from the early 1960's you will see what I mean.

Now fast forward to 2012, the male female ratio has improved greatly. You dont date anymore, you kind of hook up or go do something other than watch a bb game. Watching BB IS SO BORING in some minds, but thats not what they are on campus for. They are there to go deeply in debt in order to prepare for a better economic life than what their parents might have. Some how I am glad I am 70 going on 71 and not 19 and a student trying to make up my mind on a major in something and getting a something job somewhere. I done that once. Its a good idea to have goals in life. Now thats the big picture, and attending BB games can be fun but its a small function of attending SDSU. End of sermon.

Does the Brookings Register keep copies of old papers from say 10 years ago. The last few years we played 605, my friends and I were in the front of the student section for those home games in body paint and we made the front page of the paper I think 2 years in a row the games after we played USD. I have a copy of one pic at home but is very poor condition.

I can't believe that I am actually going to say this about a SDSU team, but I think the fact that we have some depth will be the difference. Westbrook, Gruis, and Krogman are good players but when they get a rest will their back-ups be able to maintain the level of play? This is especially important on the road. It took SDSU a couple years to develop that 6th, 7th, and even 8th man that could be counted on...

I think the Jacks will have control of a good portion of the game and, aside from the first few minutes of the first half, will never really let the Yotes get anything going.

Because of that, you would expect USD to try to slow down the pace, and make the game as low-scoring as possible. And the Jacks should push the ball and keep the flow as fast as they can. It will be interesting to see if the Yotes have anyone who can keep up with Nate.

The way I look at it is college, is sports are part of the whole experience of college. The degree with what you go for, but so many I think miss out on the college experience because they only know going to a party and wasting their weekends away. Being envolved in clubs and activities, going to sporting events, that is just as important to me going to SDSU as getting my degree was. I feel like so many student really miss out on a lot of positive things because they either party to much or sit in their rooms playing video games etc. I was in the marching band, a fraternity, went to almost every basketball game, school play etc but still felt like I missed out on a lot. But I hear what you are saying. My parents went to state in the late 60s so I have a vague idea from their stories to how it is different now.

We had party animals in my day to so that part has not changed. Yes sports fandom is anexperience that you should be part of. I don't disagree with anything you have said. I never was part of a faternity as they were just getting started at SDSU. When I was speaking of indefiniteness and lack of goals, I was telling my story. Doing it all over again, I would have talked my parents into cosigning on a loan to get the funds to attend USD and major in accounting. If I had pulled that one off, I might be on the other side of the gym tonight.

                    Re: USD Week

Having raised two recent college graduates, I can tell you the biggest difference is that kids just have a hell of a lot more choices in everything now. They can be instant spectators on almost anything to entertain them - music, humor, sports, etc. Think of it, the world is literally at their fingertips as part of the I-revolution (why do you think all communications innovations are I-Pads, or I-Pods, etc.?) So why not I-Fan?
This whole concept of institutional loyalty, i.e. you become upon enrollment a lifelong fan of your school through thick and thin, is much less of a communal and real thing to them. They define community totally differently, they form their own communities, and they do it from a personal standpoint outward, not as adherents to a top-down structure, i.e, a university or a church or a political party. So I would not view the current college crop as disloyal to their school as much as simply discerning consumers of their entertainment time. This is why, I think, you get a much more front-running fan in the younger generation; when their team is not very good, there is no institutional loyalty to bring them back to the stands, and there are infinite places elsewhere to be to be entertained.
While I am at it, Nidaros, you have my utmost sympathies. A 6-1 male to female ratio in college seems like a particularly nasty strain of hell on earth.

Well, Nidaros, given your significant commitments to SDSU, I, for one, am glad that is not the case.

USD will have a chance if SDSU doesn't come out with intensity and grit on the defensive end. I think Boots will try to limit SDSU's touches. They can't run with the Jacks. UND got hot from outside and an inferior team buried the better team in GF because SDSU didn't defend. If the Jackrabbits play to their potential the outcome will never be in doubt. 2 years ago when the women played in Brookings the Jacks came out flat while the coyotes were ready to play, resulted in a much closer game than it should have been. I'm ready and I expect the players are as well. Get a win here and Saturday and then SDSU goes on the road for awhile.

Then again, you might be stuck in the office cranking out tax returns and to busy to go to the game.

How about "Party on the Plains"?
If students need a party to fill their weekends, start it at the game. That's what we did in the 80's. Students went home on the weekends when the Jack's were on the road, but made it a priority to be in Brookings on game days.
