“It was amazing that every single one of those games came down to the last possession,” Brown said. “It didn’t matter who was having a good season or who seemed to be playing well at the time – you kind of knew it was going to come down to one point. Every possession at the end, you held on for dear life knowing it might be your last.”
If that quote talks about the Jacks and Coyote I will have to disagree. I can't speak for the 80's and beyond but I have been following since 1991 and rarely did a SDSU vs USD game come down to a last possession. I actually can hardly remember a game that did come down to the last possession. They were emotional games but not many of them were decided by 3 points or less. I would venture to guess that 80% of the recent games were not within a single possession at the end.

I do, however, have the first ever illegal Hobo Day shirt I bought as a SDSU student. It is my Hobo Day '95 "If you don't remember what you did last night, it never really happened." i wonder if that is appropriate to hand down to later generations in my will...

I am really hoping that with the move up to D1, that the creativity (read: not vulgar) of the student shirts will also increase. The "Naters gonna Nate" shirts are a great start. I wonder what it would take for Nate to actually wear one during warm-ups or introductions. Now that would be legen....(wait for it)....dary

I am not sure what you are disagreeing with. This quote was from a guy who actually played in the games and, if you had read the quote, it referenced his own experience. And since I know Steve and since this is eminently checkable, I went back and looked. His memory is as dead-on as his jump shot. (Steve remains the fourth-leading scorer in Jacks' history)
Counting the last game of his sophomore year in the '75-'76 season through his senior season in '77-78, the Jacks played the Coyotes seven times (they played in the North Central Conference tournament Steve's last two years). The scores of those games, in order, were:
                78-77 (Jacks win)
                92-85 (win)
                75-74 (win)
                78-77 (loss)
                62-61 (win)
                77-75 (loss)
                76-75 (win
                )
Seven games with a total spread of 14 points. Five of seven games decided by a single point. Kind of the definition of a final possession game, don't you think?
You might want to remember that this rivalry didn't start in 1990.

I will predict the Jacks to win 89-70.

If my memory is correct, that era was 'pre-three-point shot'. The guy was amazing. We'd joke that you could blind-fold Steve, tie his hands and lock him in a closet in Scobey Hall (for visitors: opposite side of campus from Frost) and he'd still make as many baskets as he wanted.

Scored 50-plus in a State B tourmament semi-final. Opponents played slowdown in the championship to stop him and I think he had something like 25 of his team's 35 points, and they won. He was from Bryant and he was legendary around there for shooting something like 500 shots a day, rain, shine or snow, from the time he could grip a basketball.

Maybe. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if it is closer. USD has some good players: Westbrook, Gruis, Krogman, etc. They're not World-beaters, but they won't be a pushover. It's a rivalry game... anything can happen.

It appears I missed some great Jack Basketball in the 1970's. I am interested in knowing who the team and coach was that used the slow down game against Steve Brown. About the only coach who used this style of play that I recall was Carrol Heir and his Huron Tigers of 1958. Two of his players went on to be on the 1963 Championship team, Nick Brod and Denny Busch, late uncle of Mike Busch. The Huron team that year even stopped a good Jim Marking Watertown team three times that year. With the shot clock, you could not play that type of game today.
Also in the 1963 championship game Wittenberg used a slow type game, and I often wonder if the fact that Busch and Brod had played that style was a contributing factor to our win. More name dropping, Wittenberg was coached by 23 year old Eldon Miller, who went on to coach at Ohio State and UNI to name two of his stops. The prior season Miller had been on the roster at Wittenberg.

It may be more of a rivalry for us old timers. To most of the young men playing it might be just another game. In time it hopefully will develop into the rivalry of old!
When you put on that jersey, the name on the front is more important than the name on the back.

I'd take that. I was thinking 82-66 Jacks.

BTW: The Jacks are a 15 point favorite in Vegas.
