To be a rivalry,both teams have to be good enough,year in and year out, to beat the other.Can't have a "rivalry" when one team is expected to win all the time.Sometimes 'upsets" happen at a teams home court and they "steal" one.If both teams are really good,the head to head games are really intense,and there definately is a strong sense of a heated rivalry.

That's ... not true. Look at the Iron Bowl. Alabama dominated during Bryant's tenure as coach, but that didn't stop it from being a rivalry game.

And by this definition, NDSU isn't our rival since we haven't even "stolen" one in 5 years.

Haha that's funny. I like it. Like you just stated that's not the point of a rivalry. It's braggings and trust me boosters, alumni, students and fans will want SDSU to beat USD just as much if not more than NDSU. It's just better all around if SDSU beat USD in every sport than losing to them.

And it's not like having USD as a rival diminishes the rivalry with NDSU in any way. People act like it can only be one or the other.

I understand some of the USD contingent will be meeting at Bravo's pre-game next Thursday. Anybody know the kitchen staff there?

Seems like the major partner of Bravo's and Pizza Ranch played football for USD. I hope he still has his liquor license. Cant say I know any of the kitchen staff, and lets hope they are above board in serving food.

I have another example. The basketball series between KU and Misery. KU leads 171-91 or something. Football is pretty much even. Its still the most heated rivalry in sports even though KU kicks them much more often than not.

I look forward to NDSU games more than USD games. That's why I consider them our main rival. If SDSU played Northern State, would that be our rival just because they are from in-state? And the reason for the students having to procure tickets ahead of time for this game is smart. If they know how many students are actually going to show up for a game, they know how much room in general admission can be sold. And just because a game can be won for bragging rights does not make it a rivaly game. It makes them our opponent. Once again, you can have your opinion and I can have mine.

Any student who wants a ticket can get one, no additional charge. Students have paid for their tickets when they paid the general activity fee. As bub94 said, the athletic department just wants to know how many students to expect.

They advertised the fact students had to procure tickets ahead of time.
