We need to get Jackrabbit Nation to vote for Nate in the Bob Cousy Award process! As of this morning, Aaron Craft (Ohio State) leads with 27+ percentage points, and there are point guards from Michigan and Miami that are 2nd and 3rd. Nate is in fourth place with 9.6% of the voting, out of 12 players. Here's the deal: You can vote each day through March 7th. The top vote getter counts as one (fan) vote for that player when the committee meets. I'm not sure we can overcome the Ohio State lead, but I do believe the committee will know the entire voting pattern, and if we could elevate Nate up to second or third...I think it would weigh on the committee's vote...especially when they reduce the field to five finalists. It does take a little effort (that is helpful to our rabid Jackrabbit fans), as you have to vote, and then you receive an email that let's you validate the vote, and you can then see the up-to-date totals of the vote. If anyone is interested in sports writing that is significantly better than most sports writing on the internet (and many newspapers), read the Craig Hanford reporting on Nate Wolters and SDSU at Fort Wayne which is linked by HoboJack. When you arrive at the first sentence of the second paragraph (referring to the writing being strongly encouraged to always go see Nate Wolters), there is a link embedded in the opening phrase of that sentence -- go there. That article, written by Daniel Spewak about Wolters and SDSU at Kansas City, is the best sports-interest reporting I have read in a long while.

Craft isn't even the best point guard in the Big 10. Anyone who would take him over Trey Burke should have their head examined.

If South Dakota State senior guard Nate Wolters wasn't on the radar of NBA teams before last week, his 53-point explosion last week is sure to have changed that. What are Wolters' chances of sticking in the league, and who does he compare to in the NBA? Lets take a look.

Not only did Wolters pour in 53 against IPFW, including nine 3-pointers, he followed it up with a 36-point outing against Oakland on Saturday. Both games came on the road, making it all the more amazing.

While the 6-foot-4, 190-pound point guard currently comes in at No. 95 on Chad Ford's Big Board, own Jay Bilas writes today that he could very well have a future in the league.

"Wolters is a scoring point guard who recently put up 53 points, including nine 9-pointers, against IPFW. A player who reminds you a bit of former Kansas star Kirk Hinrich, Wolters is a good ball handler and passer, and has the size (6-foot-4, 190 pounds) and skills to play in the NBA. He averages 23 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 40 percent from deep and 82 percent from the line. Well summarized by Bilas. He is a "prospect" because of what he has demonstrated at the collegiate level. Is he worth a draft pick for a team so they have the first chance to try him out? That remains to be seen. He will certainly get the opportunity at the NBA level and I hope it is as a result of being drafted.

That said, only 60 players go in the draft. I have no idea what percentage typically make an opening day roster. The turnover in the NBA is tremendous. I also don't have any idea how many players typically "try out" for teams each year. The draft use to be 10 rounds or more but that limited players too much and now only 2 rounds and 60 players are limited to try outs with the team that drafted them.

So, will some team feel like Nate fits their scheme and has enough talent to expend one of the limited number of draft picks they get? Time will tell. He is obviously making an impression that seems worthy of the opportunity but it is about a lot more than that.

That number surprises me,since only 60 players get drafted each year. The 30 first-rounders are almost a lock to get a roster spot because they have guaranteed contracts. Second-rounders don't get guaranteed $,and many of them don't stick because of that. Plus,a lot of foreign players get drafted in the second round and don't come to the US for a few years. But when they finally get to the NBA,they would still be considered rookies even if they were drafted 2 or 3 years ago. Still,70 seems like a high number - thats 2 plus rookies per team.
