I understand there are a lot of people upset about not adding a Big for the upcoming season, but keep in perspective the make up of the team and who we bring back.

First off, I would have loved to see a Big brought in to at least add depth, but unless he was a juco transfer, the likely hood of him being more than a fill-in player were slim. Kids coming from high school are rarely ready to bang with college posts right away, and if they are, they usually are going to a power-6 conference school. Coughil would have been a nice get for the Jacks, but he chose to backup Alec Brown in Green Bay, so the team needs to move on with what they have, which are some long, talented individuals.

SDSU didn't lose one scholarship post, and the three that played last year were two true freshman and a true sophomore. This tells me that the development of these three players will have much more of an impact on how the team performs in the upcoming season than anyone the Jacks had a realistic opportunity to add in the off-season, and their ceilings are a lot higher than I think most of you are giving them credit for.

Secondly, the Jacks run mostly a 4 out, 1 in offense, so while having 4 legitimate posts would have been nice, it's not a reason to panic. Keep in mind that two of the Jacks wings are 6'6" (White and Horstman), which will help reduce or eliminate the effectiveness of teams trying to go big against us, as there are few if any posts in the Summit League that can run with/ guard those two.

Third off, I feel a lot of fans misinterpret that our rebounding woes were due to lack of front line size, where I completely disagree with this. The main reason for the teams rebounding deficiency was that of poor defense, not lack of size, as if you are out of position for a rebound, height becomes inconsequential. The good news is that the team has the physical tools to fix this, they just need to be more mentally prepared to do this, and feel it will come with another year of maturity under their belt.

The bottom line is player development will effect this upcoming season more than any player we could have added this off-season, and the current roster has the talent to improve in the trouble areas, and they are more than aware of it. Giving up 105 points to Oakland in the semifinals may have been just want this team needed going into the off-season, as the players have no doubt what they need to work on to take the next step.
^^^^^^^ Yeah, That! This is a great post!!! Well said! On point! Rep points for you!^^^^^^^

Don't underestimate how good Horstman and Monaghan are either. Both have the talent to contribute right away next season.

Also look for Dykstra to have a year 1 to year 2 jump like Wolters had. He's been working really hard this summer.

Sure wish we would have landed some bigs, hard to clog up the middle with forwards.

I agree that they should have landed some bigs; however, this person is not a Jackrabbit fan. He likes to just stir things up.

I'm sure Nagy would have liked it as well if Cody Zeller would have de-committed from Indiana and decided to play in Brookings or if Marshall Plumlee would have decided SDSU was a better option then playing with his brothers at Duke.

Everyone is talking about us not getting a post player which is understandable. However, am I the only one concerned with our lack of athletecism? Lack of defense was obviously an issue last year and I don't see what we have done to improve it. Our poor defense wasn't due to lack of effort but rather lack of athletecism, in my opinion. One on one defense and stopping the ball in transition are areas I'm concerned with.

I disagree that we shouldn't expect better defense with the talent we have. While we don't have Big10, ACC, etc. type athleticism on our roster, it's not like the guys we have are completely lacking athletic ability. Butler was an outstanding defensive team, but I don't think they were significantly more athletic than the upper Summit league squads (still a much better team, obviously). It is about attitude. Our biggest problem last year defensively was that 7 of our top 10 players were Freshman & Sophmores. They didn't buy in 100% to playing great defense on every trip down the floor. The lack of size + experience in the paint absolutely killed us in several of the conference games. When we did force poor/missed shots, we couldn't get rebounds. When we tried to help with post defense, we left open shooters.

With what we have coming back, I optimistically expect SDSU to finish around 3-4 in the conference standings (12-6 record give or take 1 game). If we could have added a Bell-Holter type player as a JC transfer, I think that would give us 2 more wins (14-4). Either way, it would still give us a shot in the league tournament. With as many good shooters as this team has, that's enough to scare anyone in our conference.

Anyone hearing anything about how workouts have gone, how the new freshman are looking and who improved over the summer. I kinda lost my leads when it came to mens basketball for the Jackrabbits and its been pretty quiet so far.

I know Nagy has been upset with the progress made in summer several years ago guys not coming in thebest shape. for some reason, I think the team is working hard this off season and will be primed for practice this year.

Except for that tweet Nagy made on Sept 2....

Life as a student athlete is not an easy thing. It's even tougher when your not is shape. We'll get there.

I've never met a coach who was happy with the condition of his athletes on day 1, it didn't matter if they were in good shape or not.

Good point. I've never met a coach period.

haha.... wait I really don't get that. What I'm getting at is Nagy will never say he is happy with the conditioning and all coaches always say they can get better. What I was asking initially was how things were going. Not whether or not the coach thought they were in shape. But whatever......
