I think it is a combination of a couple things.
1) The losing team is the team that makes the most adjustments. If they didn't make the right ones for the 2nd game, they get another chance. The more times you try something, the better you get at it.
2) Overconfidence- I guess this might just apply to me but earlier I stated that SDSU has a 33% better chance of winning the tourney because they should win their 1st game. I know that coaches and players don't say they overlook teams but I think they look ahead more when they should win. If SDSU is looking at Oakland and IPFW is looking at SDSU, that gives IPFW a edge.
