I have seen Bilitz play and at 6'10 is very athletic, but rail thin!
I'll be stunned if both the freshman don't redshirt. Its really not about this year at all, unfortunately. It will take this team a while to gel, lots of new faces, and their schedule is absolutely brutal. 10 wins is realistic, 15 not expected, and 8 or less a possibility.

All that said, it will be an exciting year for the Jacks and I plan to follow along with every game.

The Bison are following the same recipe by redshirting all of their freshman last year and have seen signs they will do the same this year. If the cupboard hadn't been so bare I have heard Nagy would have preferred to redshirt Holdren who while having a good year would have benefited greatly from an extended year to work on his game. It's just the nature of where are program is and I would much rather have those guys around an extra year when we are in a conference and or have the opportunity to get in the "big dance". It will be interesting to see what happens with Bassett and Cordova next year. These guys have the build to play DI basketball right now and will provide the depth we need to compete.

Hm, I'd missed Nagy saying he'd redshirt Engen and Bilitz. So be it. We'll just be that much better in 06-07.

I recall Nagy mentioning that shortly after they signed when he was on the Craig & Mike show. Of course alot can change in a year, but I'm guessing they will both redshirt.

i had heard at an Alumni event this summer from coach larson that the plan was to redshirt both the big men still. it's 20/20 hindsight now but i kind of wish holdren would have redshirted last year --- four more years would be awfully nice.

SDSU basketball in Patrick Reusse column

THERE ARE FOUR Minnesota freshmen on South Dakota State's men's basketball team: Matt Cadwell (Cretin-Derham Hall), Bob Bilitz (West Lutheran), Mark Engen (Lamberton) and redshirt Andre Gilbert (Park Center).

The lads will get a full opportunity to test their skills. The Jackrabbits play at Kentucky on Nov. 13, at Illinois on Nov. 18, at Marquette on Dec. 8, at Nebraska on Dec. 8 and against the Vincent Grier Show in Williams Arena on Dec. 23.

The game with Marquette will provide a reunion of Minnesota expatriates since it also has four: sophomores Ryan Amoroso (Burnsville) and Dan Fitzgerald (St. Thomas Academy), and juniors Mike Kinsella (Rochester John Marshall) and Jamil Lott (St. Paul Como Park).

The only problem with this in the Star Tribune print addition Reusse said Coyotes instead of Jackrabbits!

Ruesse apologized today. Sounds like he took some heat.

                      Take this advice

Don't ever refer to a Jackrabbit as a Coyote, or vice versa. That occurred last week here in BTQ, when the South Dakota State Jackrabbits were referred to by South Dakota's nickname. This led to a sizable reaction that revealed the following: True South Dakota Coyotes get as upset to see their name attached to the state's other university as true SDSU Jackrabbits do over being misidentified.

Surprise, Patrick! There are Jackrabbit (and Coyote) grads and fans lurking in the Twin Cities and the upper midwest--who knew? /sarcasm

Just a side note on the contents of Pat Reusse column.
There is mention that the Gust Adolphus alums are discontent with Jay Schoenbeck the coach who is 1-13 against Gailardi. Guess where Jay was before GA? He was on the staff with head coach Mike Daly at SDSU. Just thought I would mention that in case  you wonder where all are good assistant coaches are after leaving SDSU. Jay was a very good coach as I recall.

I know this has nothing to do with BB or rosters. Could not resist. ;D

I noticed today that the Jacks have added one more to the Roster.

Eric Heien a 6'0", Jr. Guard from Gettysburg, SD. He transfered from Mount Marty before the '04-'05 season. His Mount Marty stats from '03-'04 look like this:

Here is a link to a Collegian story on the team that talks about our new guard.
