I think it's a little too early to throw Frias into the starting mix.  The PG position will have to be won.  I think we have 3 strong contenders with Cadwell, Casey, and Frias.

Remember the kid from Iowa who we signed last year? He thought he'd walk into a starting position and when he found out that he would have competition for it, he skipped town.

I would not be so quick to put Frias in that lineup either. I'm not that high on him quite yet. He started off playing NAIA, then he was an average player for a JC team, then he took a year off. Nothing in there gets me too excited about him. However, I do think that he might be fun to watch. If he has been playing on the playgrounds of NY for this last year then maybe he can bring a little playground to Frost.
Hopefully I'm wrong and this guy does turn out to be a stud. One thing is for sure, I'm looking foward to next years team. It sounds like we have some good guys coming in.
          Go Jacks.

Re: 2005-06 SDSU Men's Basketball Roster

Just wondering about this new guy....23 years old - graduated in 2002. That made him a 20 year old in HS. Can he make the grades? Or aren't we worried about that?

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound New York City native, Frias did not play in college last season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

"It worked out, because I am a Division I player. It was just a matter of how the chips fell," 23-year-old Frias said. "(The Jackrabbits) have a real young team, and I consider myself a veteran, a leader."

I assume you can make your own decision on that.

If he can't hack it, he won't be around long. But he obviously improved himself his first 2 years to be eligible for this year.

I only put him in the lineup based on juco experience and age, I've heard from several people that Cadwell is a very good point guard, and Casey looked pretty good last year as a true Freshman. So I'm sure there will be a lot of competition at that position.

I was going to make this same point. I really think Cadwell will be in the mix as a starting point guard or play significant time at the 1 or 2. I wonder with the addition of Frias if they will redshirt Hornby? Definitely the competition will be healthy and in the end the best players will earn their playing time in practice and what they do on the court in games.

I know warm-ups and actual games shots are different but watch Cadwell and Keller shoot. They shoot the same each time and have a very good release. We will be a better shooting team from the outside next year.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

Looks like the team is complete!
Ummmm... yeah, I would go ahead and take Ben DeWaard out of the line up, and guess that we'll sign another player. Not to be negative to him, but he walked on last minute when the iowa kid left last season, three days before midnight madness. He was a filler, and he played the minutes of one. Why do you think he didn't redshirt and keller did?
We still have one or two scholarships left based on that list.

(Walkons: Casey, Keller, Yackley, DeWard on that list.)

One more HYPR major enrolled at SDSU. I think he can manage, its not really rocket science, plus he can probably get his foot in the door to a coaching career, like austin Hansen, with this major.

                          "
Without being the compliance officer and without being Troy Larson, who both no doubt have reviewed the academic records of this young man, and I say young because I am 64 myself, we should not be so quick to write him off as an academic failure. No doubt, there may be red flags here, but I dont think the compliance officer would have issued the coaches a green recruiting light if there was indication that this individual could not cut the mustard. Lets give this guy a chance. Fall semester is still a ways off.

Also going D1, the Carr report recommended providing more tutoring services. I dont know if that recommendation would apply in this case or not because. like every other Jack fan, I dont know what is in this young man's academic records.

Also moving around does not make one an academic failure, there could be a host of other reasons, ones that were no doubt discussed with the prospective student athlete and his family.

Frias said he moved home to New York City to be with his mother, who was sick at the time. In the interim, he has been playing in leagues around the Big Apple.
How many kids do you know that would give up basketball for a year to go home and be with their sick mother?

I like the looks of this team! There are a lot of really talented players that will be fighting for a starting spot and playing time. This year will look nothing like last year!
