I doubt it, my golf game is pretty shaky. I have the beer drinking that goes with it down pretty well though.

If it is true then so be it. I wish him luck, but he is giving up an opportunity to get a subsidized education at the finest institution for higher learning in the state and sacrificing an opportunity to be part of the history associated with the move to DI. Oh well, opens up an opportunity for someone else.

From the sounds of it, if I was one of the upper classmen on the football team Steffens would be the first guy I recruited for my intramural basketball team.

By the way, why wasn't Yackley mentioned in any of the signing period articles? I know it's a simple question that could probably be answered with minimal research on my part, but why not use the "Jackrabbit brain" instead?

Concerning Yackley, I have wondered the same thing. It quite possibly may be the fact he is technically a "walk on" given his financial situation. from what I have read about him he is probably worthy of a scholarship. We got a great player without using a scolarship.

I think it hasn't been said because he hasn't technically "signed" with the Jacks. He is still free to go wherever he wants, but that will be SDSU. The Argus said this though
"Blake Yackley from Sully Buttes is expected to receive a walk-on spot."

You are correct about why he is not among the listed recruits. Of course, only time will tell if he becomes a great player.

That is too bad for Joe and for us. Without him I seriously doubt that we will be a .500 Division I basketball team next year.

The heralded recruiting class from Iowa of Beran,Loney,Green and Wenig appears to be down to two. One name we haven't discussed is Matt Jones. Has anyone heard if Matt will give it one last try next fall. A healthy Matt Jones would change the outlook for next year and put some more people in the seats.

One thing very apparent as you look at the 2005/2006 roster is going to be our lack of depth underneath. With Green leaving the program and the two incoming 6'10 freshman most likely being redshirted we are going to be thin at the center and 4 position. I wondered if we won't play one of the freshman (Engen or Bilitz).

I'm guessing Nagy will bring another 6'8-6'10 foward from the JUCO ranks for next season. Barte should be the starting center next year, he probably won't be much of an offensive threat, but he will be able to shut down other centers, which is about all you can ask from a center at this point in the program. We're a D-I transition school with no conference, I don't think we're going to be getting a 7'0 athletic center that can play solid D and put up 30 points a game dominating the paint. The next best thing is to make the centers for us and the opponent a wash, and let our fowards and guards try to win the games.

I hope there is another 6'8"-6'10" Juco player available to sign. I agree with ballz, a solid defensive presence in the middle is much more important than an offensive one at this time. With the addition of the redshirts from last year this team should be much improved on the offensive end. If all our center did was rebound and block some shots, I'd be more than happy if he only scored on offensive rebounds and freethrows. Any chance of finding a 6'9" Casey Estling? ;D 8)

If not we may be forced, as JACKGUYII stated to not redshirt one of the two 6'10" freshman this winter. They would both benefit from a year to add some bulk/strength, but I certainly don't want us to be shorthanded in the middle.

I agree a strong, athletic, experienced 6'8 Juco forward/center would really help round out this team. There are a lot of teams looking for this kind of player. I like what Loney brings off the bench but remember he is only 6'5. I'm sure Nagy and company are scouring the country to add another experienced big guy to our roster. If we did indeed add a Juco point guard  as reported on this board it should solidify the guard position and would allow us to potentially redshirt Hornby and give him another year to develop. Maybe there is a big International player looking for a home at a school like SDSU. If the right player is not out there it's probably best not to waste a scholarship this year and wait to add the right player next year. The two South Dakota kids that we are reportedly looking at Tveidt and Cordova would fit the bill for what we are lacking right now.

Jose Frias went a lot of places and a long way from home to reach his dream of playing Division I basketball.

Frias signed a Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play for Scott Nagy and the South Dakota State men's basketball team next season.

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound New York City native, Frias did not play in college last season and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

"It worked out, because I am a Division I player. It was just a matter of how the chips fell," 23-year-old Frias said. "(The Jackrabbits) have a real young team, and I consider myself a veteran, a leader."

In its first Division I season, SDSU went 10-18 in 2004-05, the school's worst record since ending the 1989-90 season 8-19. The Jacks competed in some of their games at the new level but struggled with a limited amount of guards, something that Nagy said he never wants to endure again.

"Jose is seasoned," Nagy said. "He's different than the other kids that we have. We only have one guard - Andy Kleinjan - who has been with us for more than one year. This guy (Frias) gives us some age that we need, some experience."

Frias graduated in 2002 from Hyde School in Woodstock, Conn., where he scored 1,037 career points. He said he went to the prep school to improve his grades before college.

Frias went to NAIA Division II school Maine-Fort Kent in the 2002-03 school year before leaving for California, where he enrolled at Allen Hancock Community College in Santa Monica. For Hancock in the 2003-04 season, he averaged 11 points, five assists and 2.8 steals per game for a 15-13 team.

Frias said he moved home to New York City to be with his mother, who was sick at the time. In the interim, he has been playing in leagues around the Big Apple.

"He's from the streets of New York - he's always been tested," said Rich Hughes, Frias' coach at Hancock. "Every time he plays there, he's always getting competition. It's good for him, because that's where his bravado comes from. He's not cocky, but he's very sure of himself."

Frias is the fifth player to sign with the Jacks. The others are 6-8 forward Mohamed Berte, who is transferring from Indian Hills Community College in Iowa; 6-10 forward Robert Bilitz from West Lutheran High in Plymouth, Minn; 6-10 forward Mark Engen from Red Rock Central High in Lamberton, Minn.; and 6-foot Canadian guard Cam Hornby from Winnipeg.

                              Reach Chris Solari at 977-3923.
