Football I am not as worried about with students as much. Basketball on the other hand seems to be lacking a large student following. When I was in college from at the end of our D-2 days, my friends and I did everything we could to be at games. We did body paint for the big games and cheered the whole game and such. Now I see students showing up late, leaving early and not interested in the game as much. I feel the new bleachers that were put in where not conducive to heightening the student experience as much as they are to just look nice. Winning will help that, but the campus has how many thousands of students on it at one time. There is no reason that 1/10th of the student population shows up to games. At least 1000 students should not be too hard to get too. For football, when the new stadium is built, put the students and band behind the visitor’s bench and make it much louder for them but also for the main side to hear the band better.
I hope so, because they are going to have to pay for it in student fees, which I have absolutely no problem with whatsoever. If the AD wanted more money when I was a student to redo CAS, I would have had no problem with any fee increases (easy to say coming from a guy that posts on a message board dedicated the the university's athletics and has already graduated.)

I watched Gentile's video and liked what I saw. He's an athlete, that's for sure. I won't lie, I do like that the recruiting pace has picked up, even if it has been forced on us. Not saying we need to have 1,598 offers out right now, but glad to see early verbals from players that want to be Jacks.

As I understand it, the BoR's D-1 guidelines don't permit fee increases to pay for D-1 improvements. The guidelines basically locked SDSU @ the 2003 facility level, as far as student fees are concerned. No state money and no student fees can be used to support anything *new* (e.g. Dykhouse Center)--not the initial construction, nor the maintenance.

We'll see. I for one do not believe for a second that student fees will not have something to do with the funding. Things change, which is exactly what I think the BoR will think as well.

          Sorry for the thread drift.

I have to agree with this. IMO this is where the Presidents of USD and SDSU need to come together and go to the SDBOR for one common goal. They both have needs in the way of Athletic facilities and there's no way all the $$ is going to come from "donors". I'm sorry, it's just not.

How much more burden can we put on the students? The past legislature balanced the state budget primarily by cuts to higher education. Which means the higher education system will need to balance their budget by tuition increases.

It is not the BOR that needs convincing, but rather our legislators. It is not just athletic facilities, but rather higher education in general that needs improved funding. SDSU & USD need to lead the charge to get Pierre to treat higher education as an investment in the future of SD rather than as an expense, as many now perceive it.

I'm definitely not saying a new stadium needs to paid for soley on the backs of the students of SDSU. But...IMO a portion of it should. And it probably will be up to a vote of the student population, as it should be. The SDBOR should at VERY least allow the students to decide for themselves if they want to help out the same institution that they are so proud to be a part of.

Well the students raised fees for the wellness center so it depends how much or how high it will go but students will have to pair a fair share. I would like to see a student fee increase and still allow students into games for free. I am going to tie this into the thread topic now, because of the quality of athletes we are getting and how well the team is doing now would be a good time to try to get the students to open up a touch more because it seems student interest is at a all time high if you ask me. The players can tell the difference with a big student section.

I'm sorry but If your a person who has no interest in the sports @ SDSU they you should not have to help support them. period.

Here are others like yourself who can get a free ride, and you have to hep fund that? How is this a system for fostering a world class education.
I love that SDSU's Teams do great in the classroom. I would also like to mention that I helped organize the extra fee increase discussed in the post above.

I'm just saying I think students would have a right to have hard feelings toward athletics if the did not participate in anyway. Like I did while in school.

If you want students to help shoulder the burden, Take away the portion of the Ath. Dept. budget that they cover, and charge them to get into games.

That way they pay for what they "use". (A lot of students do not have time to go watch the sports while @ SDSU)

I know most of you here will not agree with this, and that is your choice. but remember when it comes to paying student fees... you have no choice...

Well last year the Students' Association did a very unscientific poll and asked every student that walked through the Union, about 2400 in a day, if they had to raise their student fee's what would they want it towards. We had options for Parking Ramp, Wellness Expansion, PAC, Football Field, and the option for nothing. The #1 vote getter was a parking ramp. The second highest was nothing and third was a parking ramp. If you have read VJ Smith's book on the history of SDSU, the campaign "Stadium for State" shows that the students back then didn't want to pay for a stadium and even now still don't.
Personally, I would be willing to pay $32 extra per year to have an awesome stadium if we only did a $1 student fee increase, but right now I am about 80% sure that a student fee increase would not pass.

I fear the students have not change much in fifty years, student life is about getting the sheep skin and moving on and making those big bucks somewhere and somehow. I think the one difference now is that students are more encumbered with student loans than they were fifty years ago. Jay Larsen's position did not exist back then. Then too, there are some very generous alums who will give generously to projects that do not include athletics. These folks just don't see the same vision that most of us on this board see.

                            So back to recruiting.

I didn't see this young man's name on the list of offers.

                            Nate Hammon-QB Milton, WI.
