  • Re: 2011 Recruiting List

Small schools generally put their best athletes at RB or QB. That's why you see a lot of defensive guys, TE's and WR's in college who played QB in high school. Which is also why I played Offensive Guard and Linebacker in high school.

Looks like we've got interest in another high school QB: Tyson Broekemeier, Aurora, Nebraska. His coach says, "... North Dakota, South Dakota State, Northwest Missouri State and Nebraska-Kearney, among others, have contacted Broekemeier."

I've added him to the list.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa...wait a minute...how did you get overlooked for playing offensive guard at State??????? What the heck was Stig thinking pigeonholing you at linebacker. You might have been the next Adam Timmerman!!! You may want to find a good lawyer and see if you have a case for all of the millions you missed out on in a potential NFL career.

Jacks have interest in Nolan Clausen, TE from Ord, NE.

I normally like to only pass on information from published reports or direct family contact, but I have to use a family friend as my source. We officiated their 1st round playoff game last night, and my umpire knows the family and he shared it with me.

Clausen is a 6'4" 220 lb. TE/DE. He was double teamed as a DE most of the night and he continually wreaked havoc in the backfield. After they took a quick 14 point lead they stayed with a conservative game plan, so he had few touches on offense. He was a very good blocker, and by the 2nd quarter most defenders were avoiding any contact with him.

Ok take it for what it is worth... I covered 9 man football tonight Hanson/Avon both very solid teams and watched Hanson's 6-2 200+ pound running back Pierce Smith put up 300+ yards of offense, catch a couple and score I believe 6 TD's. Not to mention played every down on D.

He reminded me of Kyle in that every time he touched the ball, even if he had 3 defenders on him, he kept his feet moving and picked up another yard or two.

I don't claim to know how to evaluate talent in HS to determine D1 capabilities, but I will be watching to see where he goes next year because he will be playing somewhere.

I don't think SDSU is overlooking 9 man fb. There are some capable contributors found at that level. Jake Steffen and his brother who graduated last year come to mind. This young man seems like a gamer.

I don't know if Mike ever played 9-man, Jake did though. I'm pretty sure Greenway played 9 man when he was there.

I believe Conrad Kjerstad played 9 man at Wall.

Generally with 9 man you have to be careful when evaluating talent, a lot of people do the "eye" test and generally every decent 9-man school has at least 1 guy who passes the "eye" test.

A lot of schools move them over to defense. Though that can be said about a lot of "athletes" because defensive backs and OLB are very hard to be found in the FCS level.

Yes Mike did play high school football. Excerpt from the 2007 media guide:

BEFORE SDSU: In football at the high school level, was a four-year
starter who racked up impressive career totals, including 90 touchdowns,
                          25 interceptions and 6,681 all-purpose yards, including 2,771
passing and 2,100 rushing ... as a senior, he led the Stickney-Mount
Vernon team coached by his father, Myron, to an unbeaten regular
season ... rushed 101 times for 825 yards and 14 TDs and was 105-
of-188 passing for 950 yards and 10 TDs ... also had 11 receptions for
                          214 yards and three TDs

No mention of 9 man but I have a grand nephew who played for Arlington against him. You are right about Conrad Kjerstad, he just never came to mind when made my first post on this subject. The point is there is talent at the nine man level. Rest assured the SDSU staff is very careful in their evaluations and very selective.

Joe was saying he didn't know if he played 9-man football. Not just football in general.

Has Stickney-Mount Vernon ever played anything other than 9 man football? If they were playing 11 man during the time that Mike was playing, its news to me.

I think we can conclude Mike was a nine man player and a very gifted athlete.

yes, they were 11 man for at least 2 years maybe 4.

Now Mt. Vernon is alone (I think) and Stickney is with Corsica.
