I'd vote for just one traveling trophy: the Dakota Marker. No more.
One poster referred to USD joining the MVFC...my guess is that's far from a sure thing and, personally, I hope we remain in different conferences for football.

I suppose if we are looking for a big heavy trophy for players to boost after the game we could have the Rushmore Rock with a miniature carved Mt. Rushmore that the guys could try to hoist over their heads.

The rivalry didn't have a trophy back in our D-II days...it doesn't need one now!
I think the administrations of the two schools need to get together and promote the coming, inevitable revenue-sport meetings as something with a positive spin. . .
Something like The Great Rushmore State Reunion or something like that. (Thinking of an alternative to the Kansas-Missouri "Border War" (which the KU and MU administrations have tried and failed to re-name the "Border Showdown") or the Oklahoma-OK State "Bedlam" games, but rather something along the lines of the Georgia-Florida "World's Largest Cocktail Party"--but that's of course utterly politically incorrect nowadays.)
Whatever it is, both schools' administrations will need to promote the heck out of it as being a positive thing to bring the state together, otherwise it'll likely just get ugly again (people being people, and me being somewhat of a pessimist regarding that human nature.)

Totally agree with this, Btown. I think that the traveling trophy thing is more of a border-rival scenario. The home state rivalry, State vs U. shouldn't need such a prop.

Oh c'mon, it's the oldest state/u rivalry in the country. One of the oldest rivalries outside of the Ivy League, even. The rivalry's 120 years old this year. Not much stuff in this state is older than that.
One way to discourage "bad fan behavior" during games in Brookings is to make sure as much of the stadium is full of SDSU folks as possible. I would hope that if the game is in Brookings, season ticket holders would have first crack at buying single tickets for that game.
By my calculations, that should leave about 400 seats for USD fans.
The same applies for basketball-although I believe we will see sellout crowds and a huge demand for season tickets for basketball within 5 years.

That kind of history deserves a trophy.
For all of those reasons you just mentioned. The rivalry, if and when it is resumed, will stand on its own. No need to sugar coat it with some silly trophy.

Well that's what this is all about isn't it? Revenue? SDSU athletics is not about the student athletes, or the education, or making them better citizens and better people. It is and should be all about money.
I have been against playing USD for a long time, I used to believe that there was nothing to gain from the game. I have changed my mind. As much as it pains me to say it, USD is pretty good, they have some quality wins this year and have been competitive in all games except UNI. I hate to say it, but it would be a very good game by 2011, and a quality win for us if we beat them. I would prefer the game to be played at CAF, the dome just cannot cut it. Howard Wood, only if they bring in some temp seating to allow the capacity upwards of 15K.
It is harder to find reason NOT to play them anymore. I say do it, the game would be huge, it would be great revenue, plus I don't think it wouldn't take away from the NDSU or UNI games.
Bring on the Yotes!
I believe there was a trophy in the DII days. It was a little brown jug that went back and forth between the schools. Not sure what they called it but I saw it somewhere in the athletic department and it has all the past scores etched on it.
