I was surprised to find out that in the NFL...every flag thrown by an official requires a written report due two days after the game officiated.

I'm sure the MVC officials are watched very closely as Pete(I think Pete is his first name) Corrillo(multiple Super Bowl Umpire(white hat)) is in charge of scheduling for the Big 10, Conference USA, MVC and one more conference I can't remember.

IMO, almost every coach in every conference at some point thinks their officiating could be better...it probably could, but so could the coaching, I'm sure.

Kolpack story (not much of a story, to be honest) on Batten:

Actually, I think it was a pretty decent story. Not many other newspapers in the towns of conference foes would do that. And I didn't know the rugby tidbit.

I don't know. I do in the Summit League basketball coaches grade refs after each game so they are always under review. But Bohl made it sound like this is either something new or that they are now getting serious about.

Nidaros, callers may have said that about SDSU, I however do not agree.

Sorry, I was just having some fun. I recall watching the 1986 Hobo Day game in Brookings. That was a big day for the Bison. There was nothing for me to laugh about that day. So what goes around comes around.

I'm a journalism professor, so I read them a little differently than others. You're right, it's nice that Kolpack did that story.

Sporting news said he could be a mid-round pick. Here's a link to the discussion, http://sdsufans.com/board/showthread.php?t=8787

Also, The Sports Network predicts SDSU over NDSU, 38-28.

thats a pretty good prediction for the game. pretty realistic. But i think it will be Ndsu on top....and did you notice this article says sdsu has the all time series lead at 52-39??? isn't it the other way around? anyways. it will be a good game and i expect a win.

we are way better than a 1-5 team....definately not a great team....but not as bad as it looks either

Noticed that they have the stats at the end of the article, saying we have the better overall record against them and saying that last year was 35-34 instead of 25-24

I, for one, don't care one iota about what any of the experts have to say regarding this game.

Throw out all the stats and suspensions and whatever else you think assure SDSU of the victory and consider the fact that NDSU and SDSU just plain don't like each other.

NDSU has nothing to lose, making them very dangerous. SDSU needs to play to win this game. I am afraid we may play it to not lose. If we play timid and cautious, it's a coin flip. If we go out there and knock them down and out early, I think that should be the key to success. Don't even let them think they have a chance with us. If we allow them to hang around (which I believe them capable of doing), we may be in for a serious nail biter.

NDSU has not won in Brookings since 1999 and they have brought many better teams then they are bringing this year.

Lake Jack pointed out the Buy-Zone (sounds like a Best Buy ad promotion) haven't won in Brookings since 1999. I decided to take a look at the series between NDSU and (no surprise here!) could readily see there were eras in which each school dominated the other school. To say that over the entire series NDSU has been dominant, as contended by some Buy-Zoners, is pure buffalo crap.

We all know that one can play with statistics. In looking at win/loss records, all one has to do is select which block of years one wants to look at, and start bragging.

The SDSU football media guide tells us the series record is SDSU 38 wins, NDSU 51 wins, and 5 ties. When I go through the year-by-year records, I come up with SDSU 39 wins, NDSU 51 wins, and 5 ties. There's no question the Buy-Zone have been dominant in some time periods. In other time periods, they've taken a serious beating year-after-year at the paws of the Jackrabbits.

This year in particular, the Buy-Zone want to talk about tradition. They're having a poor year so they look to the past for something to talk about.

SDSU played its first football game in 1889 (a 6 to 6 tie with USD). NDSU was not formed until 1890. We played our first game against the Bison in 1903 -- NDSU cleaned the Jackrabbits 85-0! So, I started with 1889 and looked at the records in 10-year increments and here they are:

YEARS SDSU - NDSU WINS THIRD # IS A TIE
                                1889 – 1898 0-0
                                1899 – 1908 1-1
                                1909 – 1918 5-1
                                1919 – 1928 7-1-2
                                1929 – 1938 4-5-1
                                1939 – 1948 5-2
                                1949 – 1958 6-3-1
                                1959 – 1968 3-6-1
                                1969 – 1978 2-8
                                1979 – 1988 0-10
                                1989 – 1998 2-8
                                1999 – 2008 4-6 Totals: SDSU 39 NDSU 51 Ties: 5

Cut out the 1979 - 1988 era and the series record is SDSU 39, NDSU 41, ties 5. Cut out 1969 through 1988 and the series record is SDSU 37, NDSU 33, Ties 5. I think you can manipulate the time periods and make the win/loss records look about any way you want! Bottom line: the past doesn't tell us much. If the past tells us anything, perhaps only the recent past is instructive because it may foreshadow the immediate future. If you look at the series in terms of the recent past and where the respective programs are heading, NDSU has a lot of catching up to do.

Let's look at just the past 5 seasons. From 2004 to the present, SDSU has won 3 and the Bison have won 2. Add in what we know about this year's records for the teams. None of those stats establish anything conclusively about Saturday's game but they tell us generally the direction the programs are each pointed. I'll take SDSU.

So, when some NDSU fan wants to talk about some past era, just pick your own time and throw it back at them. SDSU has had many eras in which it dominated NDSU too. And, we're in the early stage of one of those eras once again.
