I hate to let the facts get in the way of a thread but, my degree is in history (and political science).

Here are the FACTS about the crowds that the SDSU vs. USD game drew in the recent past:

SDSU vs. USD

2003 at Vermillion - 8,681 (our largest home crowd in '03 -- NW Missouri State 8,697 - St. Cloud 8,464 - Hobo Day)

2002 at Brookings - 5,023 (our largest home crowds in '02 -- Chadron State - 6,196, UNO - 7,581, UND - 11,581 - Hobo Day)

2001 at Vermillion - 7,284 (our largest home crowds in '01 -- St. Cloud 9,323 - Augie -12,418 - Hobo Day)

2000 at Brookings - 6,112 (our largest home crowds in '00 -- Northern Colorado 7,623 - Minnesota State 10,145 - Hobo Day)

Wow, that's weird. Not to smack or anything, but NDSU/UND games historically would be either sellouts or overflows in either Fargo or Grand Forks. The last three NDSU/UND games at the Fargodome were all over 19,000 and the two that were played in GF had crowds of 13,500 and 12,300 respectively. Then again, probably SDSU/USD probably heated up the most in basketball, if I'm not mistaken...

There are some observations that might suggest that these numbers are of the past, where one program was really in the tank and SDSU was just average and was just starting the transition to D1 FCS. Mierkort came to USD in 2004 and what these numbers represent are John Austin's program, which was less than spectacular. Some will argue that Mierkort's record at USD is inflated with cupcakes and probably so, but I do think his program is much more competitive than any team that Austin put on the field. I dont see these figures as predictors of future game attendence. Both programs are trying to reach a new level and I would like to see a few games played just to see where these programs are.

If SDSU were to beat up on USD and the crowds fall off because of that, then maybe SDSU would be wasting their time playing USD. I dont think that is the case at all. I think it would be a great game.

People from USD keep saying that people all over the state are looking for this rivalry to resume. Just were are those people besides the 200 or 300 dyed in the wool USD fans? The Argus has not published a bunch of letters begging for the rivalry to begin. So who have you got in your pockets that permits the useage of we and lots of people, a flickertail or two?

Bisonator has expressed surprise that the SDSU-USD match up did not draw better numbers and its because one or both programs have been average or really down. NDSU and UND in the last years of the NCC were top programs and they drew crowds. Just about any rivalry dies if there is competition drop off or if the competitiveness disappears all together.
I don't think the state of South Dakota had that sitution in the past and I mean the last few years of the NCC, but the future might show something else and more attendence.

I dont deny SDSU has drawn some great crowds the past few years without USD being on the schedule and I would hope we continue. Our program has to continue to progress though and so does the one in Vermillion and then maybe there will be standing room only crowds.

I dont see any reason not to resume the rivarly, but will all those people who want this rivalry to resume show up? Will they put their butts in seats and their money where their mouth is by buying a tickets to watch or will they bitch about the game not being on the tube?

Thats exactly my point. I do feel though that without competition between the two programs for five years or more, do we know where does each one stands in terms of competitiveness? We may not. I see no reason to dodge the mangy dogs down south. Lets take them on.

Coach Meierkort just said on the argus leader sports web, that USD would travel to Brookings two years in a row to makes the happen. Both have open dates. SD State get this scheduled!

I watched the video too, and its the first interview I ever witness of Ed Mierkort. He is not a bad guy, and might be a darn good coach. Also I believe he got his ME at SDSU. What he said was that some top offical be it SDSU or USD have to take the initiative and make this game happen. We dont have Fred Oien to kick around any more, so have no idea who Ed was referring to. Mierkort only acknowledged conversations with Stig where he offered to come to Brookings twice.

There are several differences between these series. South Dakota is a basketball state. The football team is playing better then ever, and attendance is going up, but people still long for basketball. The basketball team has struggled but it's still talked about even though football is coming up and has a chance to make the playoffs. North Dakota(State) had a great basketball team the last few years but they don't travel like they do for the football team. We'll see what happens if the team takes a step back this year.
UND and NDSU were always near the top of the conference. USD and SDSU normally were middle of the pack and lower. Winning has a lot to do with bringing fans out. Weather people want to admit that or not.
The top crowds every year were Hobo Days. Didn't we play USD at the end of the season in 2002 and 2000? I know the weather sucked last year but we had a game on TV that had less then 2000 people show up(just a guess). I felt bad for the 20 fans of the other team because they had to look into the wind. All SDSU fans and the TV crew got on the west side to get out of it. It looked like nobody showed up for that game. I don't think USD would have brought many more fans but there would have been a few. The only hugh crowds we get in Nov is when we play NDSU.
I heard Mierkort, too. Stu brought up that SDSU might not want to play because of the playoffs. Would you rather play USD or teams like Cal-Poly, Georgia Southern, McNeese State if you wanted a win to get into the playoffs? I'm not saying SDSU would kill USD but they would have a better chance of winning that game. He seems to think some players are going to ND because they aren't brought up on the in state rivalry. That does draw in some SD athletes. ND has better facilities so SD needs them to want to be a part of that game. He said he graduated from SDSU and respects them. He didn't say anything bad about the program. He just feels embarrassed that the football teams don't play. He also said that he was proud that the women's basketball coaches stepped up to the plate and got it done.
Ed said that he'd agree to both games(2010 & 2011) at SDSU. I think after that he'd want a game at USD but there is no reason to at least fill up the 2010 date with a home game against them. There shouldn't be a contract to play them every year. But if SDSU doesn't schedule somebody good or USD, I'll look at it and actually wonder, why not. It's a home game, large crowd, winnable(playoffs), etc...

UND and NDSU were also routinely playing for national championships for the last 20 years of DII while USD/SDSU very rarely even made the playoffs for football. That tends to have an effect on attendance

I agree with you, and that is my point. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. Seems to me that many remember this rivalry way better then it was. If people thought it was going to be a good game, or the weather was going to be good, or the game was important they showed up if not they didn't. How is that different from most games that are played at CAS?

I do think we will play USD agian and I think the first few times it we be a big deal, but I do not think that a USD game is an automatic big crowd. History is on my side.

Coach Stig just said that the conference schedule is tough enough that he can schedule easier teams in the non-conference schedule, on the "Sports Show".
Mierkort also said that NDSU has called them. He also said that Illinois State, Southern Illinois and UNI want to play them. That makes several conference teams that want to play them.

Many do. Many are wrong. Hobo Day is the grand finale of Hobo Week.
