I can remember the Jacks facing Central Missouri State in 1987 and Northwest Missouri State in 2003.

Missouri State is a game that worries me. Jacks better get their heads in order before going into this one. This game has gone from a should win to a must win. Hopefully last week was the start of one of those end of season streaks we have become accustomed to.

Is it the "pain train" that makes your team sooooooooooo good at stopping the run? Or is it something else..........

        Re: Missouri State

What in the heck is a "pain train"? Around here we just line up and play football.

Missouri State's defense is not good. We've had our bad moments on defense, but they were against Cal Poly, McNeese, and UNI. Missouri State gave up 35 to Washburn (D2) and 28 to SEMO (seriously?)

We have one of the better offenses in FCS. We could score 40+ this weekend. And while Missouri State has a good offense, they're not going to score 40+ at CAS.

        Bears 28
        Jacks 42

I hope the hunters already have 15 birds in their freezers and can join us at CAS this weekend.

Of course we do. We're not communists so we play 1) outdoors and 2) on real grass...the way God intended.

The next year was our first year of transition. There was to be a return game in 2004 in Maryville, but they cancelled or they bought out not sure. NWMU did not want to risk another loss and ruin their rating in D2. So I believe that the series with NWMU is 3-1 our favor. Not that it matters and as I stated, Saturday will be the first meeting with Missouri State.

I do remember the game you sited. That was the Platte native first year as head coach at NWMU. I know I am going to murder the spelling but I believe the name is Mel Tjeersma. He graduated from Southern or USD Springfield as it was known before closing. NWMU had lost about as many games as Indiana State and that coach wanted to win this one game real bad as I remember. He has had nothing but success since then, but they seem to avoid all FCS games for non conference play in order to get to Florence Alabama for the D2 Championship every year. They have not played Missouri State for years. Also we have beaten Central Missouri another D2 twice in the 1980's.

If this Miles guy at Indiana State has as much coaching ability as Tjeersma, I would expect things to be different starting next year.
Anytime a correction/addition has the Jacks winning two more games is good with me. I only remember the '95 & '96 games because of personal involvement. I'm a little surprised I did not remember the 2003 game. I would not have remembered the game in the '50's as my parents were both toddlers at the time.

No need for the carharts I guess. What time can we fire up the grills in the backyard?

I hope its 9 AM. Could be 10 though. A friend in the AD's office just sent me a text that said, "9 or 10?" when I asked, so that is of no use at all for your predicament. Sorry MD.

The 1950's game was in 1956, and yep I was there. I was a 15 year old sophomore in High school and a football player wantobe. The year 1956 was a rugged season and SDSU finished 4-5 over all. SDSU had a good team and were picked to win the NCC as I recall, but they had a bunch of injuries like we are experiencing this year. They started and lost to Montana State 14-33 and then played NWMU and won 7-0 and the next game was one of the first flights for a SDSU football team. They flew to Tuscon Az and lost to U of Arizona, 0-60.

The game I remember more than the NWMU game was the Augie game. The legendy Bob Burns had left Washington High to coach Augustana. Many at the time thought it was odd that a Roman Catholic was coaching a Lutheran college. But the Augie Admin saw a very good coach and his personal faith was very secondary. They were right. It was the first SDSU loss to Augie and the first time I saw how a on side kick was used to win a come from behind football game. SDSU had a lead but lost in the closing minutes 20-21. Plus just before half time, the refs and the timer got things messed up and Bob Burns argued with refs for nearly 15 minutes and as a result they put time on the clock and SDSU had to come back from the dressing room for one more play. The image of Burns, wearing a business suit and topcoat, and arguing is still very vivid in my mind. Needless to say, he was booed very much by SDSU fans and students. The last play of the half had no affect as I recall, but I think Burns wanted to show the NCC that he could not be bushed around and that he was more than a successful high school coach.

SDSU beat UND 14-13 and lost 14-19 to USD and NDSU, but I think injuries were taking their toll.

Like we hope this year will turn out, SDSU won the final two games against UNI in Cedar Falls and Morningside. BTW Morningside had a great team and had clinched the NCC title before coming to Brookings. I hope this is not digression but I do see a bit of a parellel here. Lets hope for a strong finish this year like our team did in 1956. We got a lot more on the line besides a strong finish.

I used the media guide as a mind jogger btw.

I don't have a good grasp on what there will be for a crowd Sat. The weather will be ok, not good, not poor. Have a feeling the student crowd is going to be less than spectacular once again since it's not 70+ degrees. We used to joke in college they had a class at NSDU students had to mandatorily take for football game attendance and cheering. Maybe SDSU should take a look into this.

                        How about 9500 for attendance?

I don't have any idea of what to expect either. I'd be happy with 9500 but not surprised with 6000. Perhaps being in the thick of the conference race will help put a few more butts in the seats.

Yes, they are going to be at all home games and also sending a 100 member pep band to the NDSU game. I got this off their newsletter.

I'm going to go out on a limb and speak for everyone in the Jackrabbit Nation and say that this is fantastic news! Can I get an amen?

If we want people to show up for the late fall games then they need to feel like big games. Having The Pride there is a part of that in my book. Winning the Big West last year was great! We have a chance to keep things going and start to build a winning tradition of our own at the FCS level. The quality of the games has been fantastic. Judging by the attendance, there are a lot of people that feel this excitement as well.

Also, big props for a pep band making the trip North!

We can finally put all of this crap behind us, focus on getting behind the team, and cheer them as they try and win the Valley Football title this year!

I'll be there Saturday with bells on! Oh, that's right. One battle at a time.
