The official is looking right at Whitehead and would have been in perfect position to see if the ball was trapped. I'd say it was a catch.
We were sitting on the ground in the south endzone during the game. It was a catch. He was basically lying on his back and pulled it in, it didn't get that close to the ground to trap it.

      Jimmy and State Fan:

Thanks from mid field it appeared to be a trap. I was surprised when the offical signaled a completed pass. So thanks again.

I only seen this picture now on three different web sites but its not convincing picture in my mind. Notice No 7 right hand is lying flat on the ground and no where near the ball. If both hands were cupping the ball, I would be convinced. If it was a completion as the offical called it, it appears to be a one hand catch. Given the other facts that State Fan said namely the offical was in position to make the call, the game is over and in the books and I accept that and wish to move on. I just thought since Jimmy Jack had seen the video, that there might have been some evidence of a trap. My questions have been answered.

The ball just bounced up and touched one of his hands and he had the instincts to pull it in. He's a great player.

too bad the refs couldnt look at some of their calls 100 times but anyways the ref that made the right call was in the perfect spot to see everything. I dont think you can single out 1 play in this game and say you lost the game on it. if y'all had made that play against us to win I couldnt say that play cost us the game. I'd have to think about all the other times we had the ball and didnt score. the missed field goal. the dropped balls. the turnovers. it was really a tough game and i seen why y'all are hard to beat on hobo day.

I know McNeese72 is a great guy and most likely a better photographer than I ever thought of being, but this is one photo, that causes some doubt in my mind, not disbelief and that my point. The pass was caught and that's fine. Game over and McNeese won.

We have recruited more speed in the past 4 years than maybe in all the days of the NCC. Some of our former players might disagree. The point is we still need more speed to beat teams like McNeese. I think our guys put a very good effort, but at times, McNeese seem to get the edge by overall quickness. Possibly we are lucky we got to overtime with them. Had we won it no doubt would have been termed an upset by the media.

We now need to start worrying about this Barden guy from Cal Poly. He has been a beast and had Meirkort apparently shaking in his boots. This gives me some concern. So looks like some more good football on Oct 18, 2008.

Thanks Crossfire, McNeese will be winning many more games. Its a class program. You have a reason to be proud.

That is an impressive picture...Doc has a fast shutter finger.

I have a little confession to make about listening to the game. After attending the SDSU Classic Cross Country meet in the morning, I had to jump in my car and drive to a wedding. WNAX came to the rescue and I listened to the entire game UNTIL the end of regulation when it was tied and going to overtime. At that point, I had to go into the church for the wedding which started promptly at 5:00 p.m. Fortunately, one of my sons in Coughlin Alumni Stadium agreed to text-message the play-by-play while the wedding ceremony was going on: my phone would vibrate every few minutes with a report. Had we won, I would have had to jump to my feet and yell -- maybe a big Amen! or something appropriate. But, my wife (also reading the text messages) and I had to suffer in silence.

I thought: what a great game in spite of the loss. Two very good football teams, both having eliminated the word "quit" from their vocabularies, squared off and put on quite a show for the fans.

                    Go Jacks!

Good luck against Cal Poly. They will be a tough team to plan for defensively but if you can make them somewhat one-dimensional with that tough defensive front of yours things could go well. Barden is going to get his due to his size and skill but I do not think they can beat you with just him.

                        Again, Best of luck!!

Having watched the video in slow motion, is there any evidence that Whitehead made a trap catch? That is the ball touched the ground, which would have made the catch incomplete. I thought I saw the ball hit the ground, but maybe its all wishful thinking. Even if it was a trap catch, it would not change anything, so maybe best to move on.
Having been at the 8 yard line down on the field during that play, it looked like a trap. The ball hit the ground just before Whitehead got his hands on the ball. But of course, SDSU's "favorite" official Justin Ingalls called it a catch.

We'll be ready. The pressure is on all on Cal-Poly. With no auto-bid you have to impress beyond a doubt those voters who have a say about the playoffs. We've beat you the last 2 years with Barden and we have 2 weeks to prepare. We can compete with any team in the nation, especially on our home field. For all intents and purposes that was a win on Saturday even though the final score was not in our favor. If we do have a 4 loss season, which is highly likely, intelligent playoff voters will recognized that the game on Saturday was no more than a wash, 1/2 a win or loss at best or worst.

We don't know that. A lot will depend upon what happens with both McNeese and SFA the rest of the season. Of course, none of it will matter if we don't perform well and win at least 5 more games. On to Cal-Poly is more the point I was trying to make.
