Forced out might not be right. From what I understand, around 2017ish, Stig knew that he was closer to the end of the his career than the beginning of it. He told Sell, "Hey, sometime in the next decade I might hang it up. When that time comes, I would recommend you take a big look at Jason Eck, Dan Jackson, Jimmy Rogers (I have heard there were 4 names, so someone else as well.). Eck left for Idaho HC, Jackson left for FBS, all that was left was Jimmy.
Jimmy was (ironically enough) offered Washington State's DC job by Dickert. Jimmy went to Sell and Stig and said, "what do I do? I'm making $125,000 (I have no clue what he made as our DC?) as SDSU DC and I have been offered close to $1,000,000 to be Washington State's DC (now their DC is being paid less, but 2 years ago that's what Jimmy was offered.)"
An agreement was then made that Stig would step down, Jimmy would become HC for $300,000. Coming off a National Championship and the potential to lose Jimmy to a (at that time) P5 school, was the right timing to transition coaches. In a way, Stig maybe retired a few years earlier than he had planned on just so the job could transition to Jimmy. Or maybe he was ready to go, who knows.
