Here's the Coaches Poll with FCS games through September 1. Jacks and NDSU still #1 and #2. Montana and Montana State exchange places after Montana had a struggle against Missouri State (which is getting some votes but is unranked). USD won but dropped one place. Incarnate Word, this weekend's home-opener opponent, moved up from 15 to 11.

Don't know the scoring system, but it seems that there should be more than a 6 point spread between 1 and 2 when the Jacks have 17 of 22 first place votes. Polls don't mean a lot after the first game anyway when some teams play ranked FBS teams while others play D-2 teams.

It would depend on the dispersion of the coaches' votes. Here are additional details from the AFCA site.

Stats Perform Top 25 FCS Poll as of September 8, 2024 (from NCAA.com website):

Comment: Last week, Incarnate Word was ranked 11 in one poll and 12 in a second poll. This week,...in this poll they dropped just one place to 12. That seems to be a subtle "compliment" to SDSU.

            Jeff Sagarin's computer analysis....Link to Sagarin's Ratings: http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm

Here are the top seven Sagarin-ranked FCS teams through September 7:

            59. SDSU

            109. Central Arkansas
            111. North Dakota

What teams are ranked 60 through 65 (between SDSU and NDSU)? They are:

            60 Colorado
            61 Mississippi State
            62 NC State

              Sagarin says...after 9/14 games:

We moved up one place in the Sagarin ratings after the 9/14/24 games. Remember Sagarin is not an opinion poll but is a computer ranking system based on a number of factors you can study here:
              http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm

The top FCS teams according to Sagarin's computer at this point (last week in parenthesis). I've added three to the list so that we have the top 10 FCS teams in the rating system.

              58. SDSU (59)
              72. NDSU (66)
              85 Montana (95)
              100. Montana State (100)
              102 Central Arkansas (109)
              105. South Dakota (104)
              107. North Dakota (111)
              109 Idaho
              118 Southern Illinois
              123 Sacramento State

Polls should be out tomorrow: The two FCS rankings featured on NCAA.com, the AFCA Coaches Poll and the Stats Perform Top 25 Poll should be announced tomorrow and we'll see if the Jacks retain their #1 ranking after winning against D2 Augie. The NCAA's Stan Becton likes to post his ballot on the NCAA site. He didn't have the Jacks #1 on his ballot a week ago and today (9/15) has dropped the Jacks to #3 behind his first-place nominee, Montana State (is 3-0 bur didn't play 9/14) and his second-place nominee, Idago (win over FBS Wyoming). Becton voted for NDSU at #4.

I guess I could see the argument for ranking Idaho #1, not that I'd agree with it, but I can't see ranking the Bobcats first.

Their wins are against opponents who are either winless or one-win teams (the latter being Maine whose win was by a FG against Colgate). The Bobcats' next opponent is Mercyhurst, another one-win team whose victory was against DII Wheeling. Sure, Mercyhurst is newly FCS, but I'd be curious how poll voters would view Mercyhurst versus Augustana.

Becton is essentially punishing the Jacks for a loss to the #14 FBS program in the country, whose next two opponents are the conference foes just above them in the rankings (the Utes and K-State).

Interesting that Jacks didn't lose any first place votes, but NDSU lost one (and the Bobcats gained one).

Thanks for this. I'm surprised the Jacks are still #1 in each poll. I assume that there haven't been a lot of eyes on the actual product that any particular team is putting out. We don't pass the eye test at this point.

Just curious, which top 5 or top 10 teams have passed their optometrist exams?

Good question this early in the season. Villanova is 3-0 on the season and ranked #5 in each poll but sits at 125 in the Sagarin computer analysis. Chattanooga, with an 0-3 record, is ranked 23/24 in the polls and 149 in Sagarin's computer hard drive. Sagarin's ratings make better sense with each passing week. The early polls seem to be heavily influenced by last year's performance. All good fun to see who is talking about your favorite team.

Right now about the only 2 teams that have are Montana St. and Idaho.

They look that way at first glance, but the computer rankings have them 42 and 51 spots back of the Jacks. They both have FBS wins against bad teams, which doesn't help them with the computer.
