Nine of the top ten in Sagarin's rankings from the MVFC or Big Sky. Seems about right.

From a casual FCS fan perspective of not much more than score watching across the country each week, and watching SDSU games and opponents. I'd say there are two top teams in the country, SDSU and Montana State, then a little bit of a gap between them and the rest of the FCS. Another grouping that are all comparable - mostly the teams ranked in the 3-12ish range, then a little gap and another grouping of the remaining top 25. That said, winning a national championship is so difficult that if I was a betting man, I'd let someone take SDSU or MSU (or maybe even both), if I get to take the rest of the field.

Some voters in the Coaches poll don't like the Yotes (kidding although I think the Stats Perform ranking makes more sense). This weekend's game in Vermillion may confirm or dispute the rankings.

SIU moves up in the Stats poll after losing to SDSU. That's respect.
I'm a little surprise that, notwithstanding our victory over MtSU, one or two first place votes haven't slid their way, especially after a week where we looked less than crisp and MtSU beat #3.

Compared to recent years, USD vying for most improved in FCS. The ‘Yotes are now recognized in the FCS Coaches and Stats Perform Top 25 polls as well as in the Sagarin computer-generated, statistics-based ranking. The Sagarin computer-generated ranking shows six MVFC teams ranked ahead of USD but in the win/loss column, USD ahead of every team in the MVFC except for SDSU. This weekend’s game will carry a lot of interest beyond Vermillion and Brookings.
Educated guess (i.e....too lazy to research) USD's #9 rank in the FCS Coaches Poll and #4 rank in the State Perform Top 25 Poll must be the highest rating of a Coyote football team since going D1. That's fun stuff. For those FCS football fans in faraway places, the State of South Dakota must appear to be some sort of hotbed for football.Last edited by JackJD; 10-25-2023, 06:00 PM.

The four teams from the Dakotas, none with 20 years in D1, are all ranked. That's a quick zip up in football quality. To broaden the view, all of the FCS teams in the Dakotas, Montana and IA are ranked in one or both polls. You know that you're over the hill when your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill. - L. Within today's article is a link to a short piece by Herder written yesterday (10/24/23) in which Herder wrote the following under the headline "2023 FCS Bracketology 2.0 -- Playoff Predictions (10-24-2023)":
The 2023 FCS playoff bracket has 10 auto-bids and 14 at-large bids. Eight teams will be seeded with first-round byes.
How the playoff field changes and takes shape every week is fascinating. So after every weekend of games moving forward, I will predict what the bracket will look like.
Below are predictions for the seeds, auto-bids, at-large bids, the bracket, and which teams are on the bubble.

The polls coming out after today’s games will be interesting. I wonder if Montana State will get demoted? I think USD will remain in the Stats Perform top 10 but will drop to around 14 in the Coaches poll. It’s going to be confusing. I think I will pencil out my best guess for top 10 but keep it to myself.
