  • NO DOUBT it was a BAD second half for Grono. maybe as bad a 2 quarters of FB as he has had in his career. My guess he makes no excuses and he plays VERY WELL the rest of the way!

that said, the first drive (and only TD drive) of the second half, we hit multiple good pass plays on routes breaking toward the middle of the field

after that pretty much every route was breaking toward the sideline. YES Mark is a QB on a D1 team and he needs to be able to make that adjustment, but come on!! how about throw in some of the routes that were working to help him get his mojo back!!

the ONE pass we hit late was to Jaxon J, guess what?? YEP a route breaking to the middle of the field

if this is play calling, i hope they recognize it. if it was just Mark choosing only those routes, then somebody needed to tell him, Hey buddy take a couple of the easy throws and keep the ball and the chains moving

because the ONLY thing i can imagine as a reason that we struggled SO MUCH in the second half against this D is they totally loaded up to stop the run and Mark had a bad half, maybe there was something else??

but i will also say, I think we could have just run it a lot more. once we get to the negative 40, i am not sure we could not just run it every time. YES we were not breaking off the big runs like, i thought we would if we committed to the run, but ya know all you need is 3.5 yards/ carry

it is not sexy but i think we would have done that. but the way it was going we kept trying to throw on one of the first 2 downs and getting NOTHING and then getting behind the chains

DEFINITELY heard it)) i thought all three players gave a great interview!! and i do not always say that. but they all had very meaningful and insightful things to say!!

also loved it when someone yelled in the background of the Sanders interview and Caleb said it was one of his uncles. had to be a fun day for him to play like that close to home and in front of family

I think the problem was the penalties that negated the ability to stay on schedule. That seems to be the Achilles heel of this team. Hopefully they can turn it around, but I suspect the word is out and teams focus (and remind.officials) of it

Should definitely expect to see DL, LBs, and the occasional DB jump along LOS to get Jacks to have false starts

i guess i would have to go back and see. how many false start or procedure calls did we have? i actually thought we only had two. and one of those we overcame on the TD drive to begin the second half.

the holding call on Hiens was holding but i thought uni was getting away with the exact same thing the whole game

i thought the missed throws, either missed completely or missed in a way that ruined YAC, were significant. obviously the two intentional grounding were huge

The problem is that almost all of them do not happen because of that.

I agree, but defenses will have little to lose, and possible penalty yards to gain

In case anyone missed it, Sac State beat Weber State 33-30, and yes, the game featured another errant snap by the Weber long snapper leading to a safety. Montana State needed this play to finish off Arizona State with a game winning field goal.

Also worth noting is the following, which I believe to be from a reputable source since he's worked with the JI team. LGR previously mentioned the merits of the MSU win in the Indiana State thread -- 1 versus 2 seed was also discussed in that thread

                    Jacks were called for:
                    • Three false starts
                    • Two PIs
                    • Two holds (offense)
                    • Illegal formation
                    • Two intentional grounding
                    UNI was called for:
                    • Holding
                    • Illegal formation
                    • False start
                    • Offside
                    • Ineligible man
                    • PI
                    • Illegal substitution
                    • Leaping
I noticed a couple holds by UNI that were missed, but I think there was at least one play late where Jacks could've been called for ineligible man. Honestly, I thought this was one relatively well officiated, and not just because the leaping penalty gave the Jacks a FG mulligan.

                    • Not that it means a lot in the grand scheme of things, but I have to imagine the combination of Sac State bearing #5 Weber in Weber and our struggle today that we will fall to #2 in the polls.

Lest the Legend of Tommy Mellott become exaggerated, the heave helped the Bobcats defeat Northern Arizona rather than the Sun Devils.

It's interesting that Fraase focuses on the Jacks win against the Bear instead of delving into the Hornets' schedule. The Hornets have the following wins:
Opponent Location Current Record Record Then Score
                        Utah Tech Home 2-6 0-0 56-33
                        UNI Away 5-5 0-1 37-21
                        Colorado State Away 2-6 0-3 41-10
                        Cal Poly Away 1-7 1-2 49-21
                        Northern Colorado Home 2-7 2-3 55-7
                        EWU Away 2-7 1-4 52-28
                        UM (#7) Home 5-3 5-1 31-24
                        Idaho (#14) Home 6-3 5-2 31-28
                        Weber State (#5) Away 7-2 7-1 33-30
The Hornets have defeated one ranked team on the road. Contrast that with the Jacks defeating three.

Regardless, if the bracket turns out like Sam Herder's most recent one, I'd be fine with it.

We were called multiple times for the same penalty, 3 false starts, two PI's and two holds, and two intentional groundings we should of adjusted/ learned that maybe the refs were looking hard at those things. 10 infractions to 8 for UNI. But doubling up and even tripling up on penalties is kind of troubling.JMO

Be interesting to see Sam Herder's ballot tomorrow.

I would be surprised if the polls flip because Sac.State also barely beat Weber. But if we both win out, I think they get the #1 seed because of their FBS win and being undefeated.
