Monday morning is expected by many sources to introduce the Jackrabbits as the new #1 ranked FCS team. Here's a preview, the FCS Football Review for Week 7:

FCS FOOTBALL REVIEW: WEEK SEVEN TAKEAWAYS (by Craig Haley)

Either the No. 1- or 2-ranked team in FCS college football was going to lose on Saturday, but No. 3 as well?

Hey, such is life in conference play, even more so when it involves rivalry games.

Highlighting some of the bigger storylines of Week 7, here are seven takeaways:

Jackrabbits Down Bison, Will Become No. 1

South Dakota State was the top seed in the spring 2021 FCS playoffs, but the Jackrabbits have never been No. 1 in the national rankings. That will change on Monday because of their 23-21 rally past top-ranked North Dakota State in the subdivision’s seventh all-time meeting of its top-two ranked teams and just the second ever in the regular season. Colby Hueter’s second-quarter interception in the SDSU end zone helped keep the Jackrabbits (6-1, 4-0 MVFC) within 21-7 at halftime, and they went on to score on their first four possessions of the second half – Amar Johnson’s 16-yard touchdown run and three Hunter Dustman field goals, including a go-ahead 18-yarder with 3:49 left. The Jackrabbits have captured the last three Dakota Marker matchups against NDSU (5-2, 3-1).

Is a #1 ranking in opinion polls Important? We have tough games ahead— would a #1 ranking just add some unnecessary noise and motivation for opponents?

Athlon Sports “FCS Football: Top 25 Power Poll Following Week 7” has SDSU 1 (2 last week) followed by Sacramento State at 2 (4); NDSU 3 (1); Montana State 4 (5); and Weber State 5 (6). The Montana Griz fall to 11 (3) after their loss to the Fightin’ Ecks of Idaho, now 16 ( not ranked last week).

A #1 ranking would be the first for the program. Doesn't mean anything in relation to our season goal of winning a championship, but it's something that matters to recruits and public perception.

Montana could get back into top 5 with win at Sac State. Interesting upcoming weekend of football

I guess being #1 is good for chest-thumping purposes, but really what it indicates is a top 2 seed...home field all the way to Frisco--that is, if you keep grinding and winning.

It guarantees absolutely nothing as of right now.

...but it is fun to think about how it annoys and irritates a few rival fans!

It's interesting to see what people think, but this ranking has a lot of holes.

I would personally rank Sac St. over MSU. Big Sky will sort itself out so this will be realized in life. But hard to argue that the Big Sky is the top conference in FCS right now.

NDSU should be below Weber St IMO.

Jackson State has no business being here. They play less than nobody.

Why the love for Chattanooga? Their best win appears to be over Eastern Illinois by 18 (ISUr beat EIU by 28).

But of course this is just for message board fodder. Plenty of questions will be answered yet on the field.

i am curious WHAT are the magical bits of information that Sagarin puts into his computer that makes it spit out Sac St and anyone else ahead of the jacks?

this seems to really bring his system into question?

as i recall Sac were the big sky champs last year. they jacks went ON THE ROAD and beat them. yep we played a very conservative second half but we beat them head to head at their place, and there is more than good reason to say that this year's jackrabbit football squad is better than last year's

is Sac for some reason so greatly improved that they should be clearly expected to jump over the jacks this year

anyway not a huge thing. i think more than anything it just takes away credibility from his system. the jacks are in good shape where it matters and things will mostly get taken care of on the field, but i am taking ndsu right now to beat Sac by double digits as the road team

Simple. It really values FBS wins.
Jackrabbits: Long ears, strong hind legs, gritty, relentless, fearless.

Do a search on Jeff Sagarin and you'll find information about the information he uses in his computer calculations. Sagarin's system "improves" as the season unfolds and he has more information. A computer can't measure the fight and heart a team may display on a given weekend but Sagarin's rankings, in a broad sense, are instructive.
