Regardless, I still plan to lose my voice on Sat. in the hopes I can help Jacks' defense wreak havoc on the ugly mutts of Carbondale.

He's questionable, and Hill indicated in an interview that it's a shoulder injury, so even if he plays, his effectiveness may be reduced.

There was an offer for tickets at $10. It was under the Bleacher Bum moniker. This is a great offer for those young families to have a great afternoon of football.

The SIU offense seems to be hot and cold in their latest games. I watched part of the first half last week against WIU and they looked unstoppable and were up 21-0 at one point, but then second half they only managed a field goal until finally scoring a touchdown in overtime. The week prior against Illinois St they scored all 35 of their points in the second half after being down 17-0.

I'm interested to see what Nic Baker brings to the offense that allowed him to beat out Stone Labanowitz. He's only 5'9" - so actually shorter than Stone last year, but I believe he is a better, more consistent passer - probably more even tempered too. With Baker to start the Spring season they lost to UND 44-21, then beat NDSU 38-14, beat YSU 30-22, then he suffered a season ending foot injury in their 17-16 win over UNI.

I remember when we faced them last year in regular season that Stone was playing with a hot head and I believe he was eventually pulled. Somebody or something really pissed him off. Maybe it was just his lackluster play. A lot went right for us in that game - not saying it wasn't earned - but it was a near perfect game. The playoff game is probably a better indicator of what SIU is capable of. We will need to play near perfect in all phases to ensure a victory. I expect the team to come out focused similar to the CSU game to start the season.

Excited to get the Valley season going! It's going to an absolute meat grinder this year with UNI, SIU, NDSU, UND, MSU and even usd looking to be capable of being worthy of the playoffs to start the season. This week will tell a lot between our game, NDSU vs UNI, and UND vs usd.

Labanowitz played well in his games last year but he was also a complete headcase. I can imagine that when he isn’t playing well or things weren’t going his way, he brings the team down. I’m guessing Baker is a more stable leader and probably a better overall passer. Lananowitz made some rediculous throws and some of those completions had more to do with luck than his overall talent. I think he played lights out in the quarterfinal game and would not be able to replicate that performance very often.

I’m also concerned for this game, but I really think our D will step up in a big way. They remember how close the playoff game was and know that this might be the best offense they face in the Valley. I’m more concerned about our own offense. I have all the faith in Chris in the world, but I feel like it’s our ground game that needs to set the tone, and that’s hard to do without Davis getting 10+ carries this game. I think our passing game is going to need to be on point in the first half to allow our run game to be efficient. That, or Johnson will get more reps early in the game to balance the load. He looks like a capable back and we need to be able to ground and pound these guys. But we can’t do that with Pierre getting 20+ carries.

Because of all that, my hot take is that we see some type of TE direct snap formations in the backfield a few times this game to utilize the depth at that position and preserve carries for strong. With Kraft, Heinz, Morgan, Cavanaugh, and Seagren, we have the depth to do some things with our TE group. I think we might see a few short yardage carries for the TE group.

                  28-10, Jacks

Tibbs, I was thinking the same thing, a game like this couple be the perfect chance to get more tight end action going, make it harder for line backers to cover them and even just Kraft and Heinz make it a tough match up for defenses. Having some running formations with the tight ends stacked or Morgan lead blocker roll out for passes could give their D a lot to look for.

Potential consequence of the extended spring season?

I sure hope our defense is as good as we think they are. I very confident in our front 7 stopping the run. Mainly worried about stop the passing game and QB scrambles. Need to baker on the turf constantly. Predicting big game from the chaingang.

So far this season, there has been something different about this Jackrabbit team.

They have done well at avoiding let downs and when they have had some minor slip ups (1st quarter against Dixie for the offense), they have been able to shift gears and overcome.

If this is the team that I think it is, I expect a 10 point (or more) win tomorrow.

And that's no shot at S. Illinois... I think they are very good. But I think our team is better, deeper, more experienced. That's just my 2 cents.

Regarding the injury bug…can we really say a broken collarbone and a broken arm are results from an extended spring season. I know Wolf practiced all spring but again even his injury seems more of the freak variety. Im no medical professional but I think these injuries are just abnormal, not a result of playing in the spring. Thankful for all the depth we have.

In fairness, our historic “let down” games haven’t been to the Dixie State’s of the world. They’ve been to mid level conference teams, usually on the road. ISUr in 2016, UNI at home in 2017, UNI on the road in 2018, UND in 2021, etc. I’m not disagreeing that this team feels locked in and like they won’t have a letdown, but I think it’s a little too early to tell. SIU is the best team we’ve faced this far.
