I'm not throwing in the towel. Its just my mechanism for softening the blow to my ego. I garuntee my phone will be ringing shortly with cheap shots from USD grads. Not much I will be able to say except its just a loss and nothing more. Our record will be 0-1.

Things will look ugly in the Argus tomorrow and I am sure we can deal with it. We want increased exposure and I suspect we'll get it. May even be headline news.

All that said, things had better improve before Winona comes to town or the **it will hit the fan.

        Good night JohnBoy...

One good thing about today, UNO looses to Indiana University of Pennsylvania

We may get thrashed, but bigjake and maverick#1 got nothing to talk about.

Keep Nelson on the bench this half. No need putting him in a position to get injured.

Have to say, I respect the fact that our schedule is as tough as it is. But never thought we'd get beat like this coming out of the gate. UCD is good, but not this much better than SDSU. Next week will be a test to see how our boys respond to a good old fashion butt whoopin'.

On a personal note, I've moved up to Freshman. And this will be my last post for the night. I've hung on too long.

Is something wrong with Nelson?, shouldn't he get some playing time, he was one of the best QB's in the nation last year and we gave him a quarter and a half to work this game. > I don't see the point in sitting him for this long unless we are going with Kardoes more often this year.

UNO loosing is always a positive.

Man, the Leader is going to give us a written beating tomorrow. I hope the players can just ignore it all and find some motivation. It's onbviously missing here.

No one had better be blaming the trip because they gotta get used to it. I'll email a few guys this week and find out what the hell happened. Besides the obvious I guess.

It'll be a long road but worth it in the end. I hope Stig can instill some direction in these guys.

Hey, an interception by Coauette. Thatta way.

Just to let you know, I feel your pain. NDSU had high hopes going into 2002 and the guys went down to Davis and got absolutely stomped at the start of the season. It was 28-0 at half and it could have been 42-0.

SDSU, if they are serious about competing in DI-AA, are going to have to start increasing schollies and getting the FB stadium and whatnot built up. In the meantime, the Jacks are going to have to suck it up and start playing better.

I was just going to ask that same thing. I hope he's not hurt, I haven't heard anything about it.

You could not of said it better Tony. I think we will suck it up, but the administration at SDSU can no longer treat football as a second fiddle sport.

                        Re: SDSU @ UCD

Well I just got back from the game and thought I would add a little insite to what I saw. First it was a little warm, 95 at kick off and in the high 70's at the end of the game. But I'm not too sure that this really determined the outcome of the game. I did not like the play calling by State at the beginning of the game. We threw the ball on nearly every play and I think they should have mixed in the run more to at least give the defense a break.

To me the biggest difference between UCD and SDSU is that UCD was much faster than State. UCD had a really good secondary and State's secondary did not play well at all. The UCD receivers were wide open most of the time. It looked like State was playing zone and UCD just picked them apart.

The other big advantage that UCD had was special teams. Their kickoff man had a really strong leg and kicked the ball to our goal line nearly every time. On the State field goal, I don't know if it was a bad snap or a bad hold but the field goal kicker had no chance of making that field goal. I was watching the kicker and he took one step toward the ball and then came to a complete stop for about a half a second, then took another step toward the ball and kicked it. The ball never got over two feet above the ground.

State did manage to move the ball late in the game playing their 2nd and 3rd string, but came up short at the 2 yard line on 4th down.

UCD had a good turn out for the game, with 8,000 in attendance. Nobody really left early dispite the score. UCD's football/track stadium is not as good as Coughlin. The UCD band was really bad, they wore cut-offs, or blue jeans with matching T-shirts.

Well that is it, I still enjoyed seeing State play and look forward to the Cal-Poly game next month. If anyone has any questions just ask and I'll try and answer objectively.

                          Good report NorCalJack.
Thanks for the firsthand report. I think you have noted some key things. Being outmatched in speed, and play calling. I really doubt having Coach Meadow the o line coach calling the running plays and Coach Wilkensen calling the pass plays will work. This has to be something unique but I dont think it will work. It seems to me one offensive coordinator is the only way to work your game plan. But what do I know.

QB Nelson it was said in the post game show was down with the flu before the game started and after one of those hits, he had double vision and that is why he did not play after the first quarter.

                            Re: SDSU @ UCD

No doubt NorCalJack is right and a lack of speed is the problem.

I was at the University of Iowa during the first couple of years of Kirk Ferentz' tenure there. He had no speed on the field (Hayden Fry left the cupboard completely bare and seemed to forget to recruit at all during his last couple of years.)

The results in Ferentz' first two years were painful (1-10, 3-9) as teams ran circles around the lumbering Hawkeyes. Here we are five years later, and while the Hawks still aren't the fastest team in the Big Ten, they've got enough speed to be among the best teams in the conference year after year. Ferentz took the time to retool, and to do it right and with integrity. Iowa's graduation rate still exceeds the overall student body grad rate. (Compare that to OU, where I am now... the football grad rate is 20-some percent, and men's basketball has graduated one player in seven years. I'd rather lose than win that way.)

I'm sure the SDSU coaches recognize the need for improved team speed. But it'll take time to retool for D1AA (And like Ferentz, I'm sure they'll do it the right way, recruiting student athletes that will make SDSU proud).

In the meantime, there will be some tough moments. Georgia Southern, only 20 points worse than Georgia, will be pretty scary, I'm afraid.
