The qb from Arizona's name is Crawford. The Martin kid is visiting NAU this weekend. The coaches are hoping on hearing something on him next week. They have also gotten commitments from 2 other kids from Arizona and a running back and Tight End from Nebraska. overall I heard we had commitments from about 8-10 players so far.

Mike Steffen from Mt. Vernon also committed today. I believe coaches are planning on using him as a receiver.

There have been lots of looks but few commitments by area football players as the recruiting rush heats up before next month's signing period.

With the start of the national signing period set to begin Feb. 2, here's a school-by-school look at who's talking to whom.  .  .  .

              Chandler

Coach Jim Ewan said linebacker Isaiah Jackson has a trip scheduled to South Dakota State, a Division I-AA school in Brookings, and defensive back K.B. Stevenson will visit Hawaii.  .  .  .

              Hamilton

Linebacker Jimmy Rogers (South Dakota State, Adams State) is still undecided, as are linebacker Miles Posz and defensive back Justin Harper, both of whom are drawing interest from Colorado schools Adams State and Mesa State.  .  .  .

RB from NE signed.  Interest from UNO, NDSU, UNK and Iowa State (walk-on).  Looks like the contact was a former NE linebacker who interviewed for a coaching position.  Smaller back with nice H.S. numbers and success.

Arlington running back to play for Jackrabbits

                By Brent Wasenius/Managing-sports editor

The decision is over for Adam Monke.

Monke, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back for Arlington, has accepted a scholarship offer to play football for South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D.

"Everyone in Brookings is like a big family," Monke said. "It seemed like a good fit for me. All the coaches were extremely nice and I'll get a chance for playing time right away."

Monke, a two-time Fremont Tribune All-Area selection, rushed for 1,637 yards and 24 touchdowns last fall. He rushed for more than 3,000 yards in the last two seasons while helping the Eagles to consecutive Class C-1 state football playoff appearances.

The Jackrabbits compiled a 6-5 record last season in their first season at the NCAA I-AA level. Playing at the Division I level has been a long-time goal of the son of Dave and Sheila Monke.

Other schools that were recruiting Monke included the University of Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota State University, and the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Iowa State was interested in Monke as a walk-on.

The South Dakota State coaching staff found out about Monke through conversations with Arlington High School graduate Clint Brown. The former University of Nebraska linebacker interviewed with the Jacks for an assistant coaching job a few weeks ago.

Head coach John Stiegelmeier, who just finished his eighth season with the Jacks, and his staff impressed Monke.

"They wanted to recruit me as a person, more than an athlete," he said. "That was the No. 1 selling point."

The Jacks do return a solid running back next season. Anthony Watson, who will be a junior in the fall, led the Great West Conference in rushing as a sophomore.

"They want to have a dual-back attack," Monke said. "They want to have two guys rush for over 1,000 yards."

According to Monke, the Jacks only have a commitment from one other running back this season and that player may switch to another position. The backs that played behind Watson this year were walk-ons.

Monke graduated in December from Arlington. He is taking classes at Metropolitan Community College and working out seven days a week at Gold's Gym in Omaha.

He looks forward to playing at the next level.

"After I committed, I really couldn't quit grinning," he said. "I'm taking classes to get a head start on (school). I can get right at it in the fall."

You have to like our chances over UNO and USD. Neither of those teams even know what a forward pass is.

From Mav over on the smack board.

The state of South Dakota will be getting the services of two of western Iowa's top high school football players.

Harlan Community senior Kevin Kruse has given a verbal commitment to the South Dakota football program, while Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln senior Chris Johnson has pledged his loyalty to South Dakota State.

Kruse, a 6-foot-2, 200-pounder, narrowed his decision to NCAA Division II schools USD and Northwest Missouri State before selecting the Coyotes. His father, Clifford, said Kruse visited the Vermillion campus last weekend, where he was offered a partial scholarship.

Kevin Kruse called the USD coaching staff Monday night to tell them he was accepting the offer.

"After he made that phone call, you could tell it was just like lifting something off his chest," Clifford Kruse said.

Kevin Kruse was hoping to visit Northwest Missouri State, but hadn't received an expected phone call from the Bearcats to set up the details, his father said, so he decided to act on USD's offer.

Kruse ran for 2,011 yards and 41 touchdowns last season, including a Class 3-A championship-game record 273 yards on 21 carries as the Cyclones blistered Decorah 42-7 for the 3-A title. The 3-A state player of the year also played defensive end for the Cyclones. Clifford Kruse said the USD coaches project his son as an outside linebacker in college.

Abraham Lincoln's Johnson also gained more headlines for his play at running back. The 6-2, 220-pounder ran for 692 yards in the first three weeks of last season, but a severe ankle injury hampered his production the rest of the way. He finished with 1,192 yards on 172 carries, and also played linebacker for the Lynx.

Lynx Coach Bob Forsyth said Johnson's combination of size, speed and character will make him an outstanding college player.

"He'll be a captain for them some day," he said. "He's going to flourish there."

Johnson, who scored a 27 on his ACT, was contacted by a variety of schools, from the Ivy League to Division III. He narrowed his choices to Division I-AA SDSU and Division II Augustana (S.D.), visiting both. He decided on the Brookings-based school late last week.

Forsyth said Johnson is also expected to become an outside linebacker.

"They did a great job recruiting him," Forsyth said.
