I really don't want to have to make the choice between pheasant opener and Hobo Day. Chances are good that going back to my hometown and hunting with the relatives would likely win out over getting drunk and watching a football game.
Pheasant opener will win every time for me. Tradition in my family and the families of my friends for 20 plus years. Many of us are SDSU fans but many are only casual at best. As for the opener, bigger than Christmas I would say. If Hobo Day is the opener, we will have the game on the radio at the lodge, looking forward to the day we can watch it on TV.
Bigger than Hobo Day, definitely. Christmas, I don't know. But the point about the game on the radio is very valid. If SDns can be out in the field and still keep up on the game, most SDns will do that as opposed to missing out on the hunt.

In my tenure on the Hobo Day committee we had a late September game(Augie). An early Oct. game (UND). But the biggest crowd was against USD (1975) on the weekend of the pheasant opener at over 16,000. At the time it was the largest crowd ever (won on a last second field goal I might add). So Hobo day has been moved around alot and if the opponent is right we will get a big crowd no matter when it is held.
Let's see....Hobo day comes one day a year, Pheasant season is open for around 75 days a year.
I think I could miss one day of pheasant hunting for hobo day.

I know that the CAS attendance record was set in 1985 on the (I think) first day of pheasant season, BUT 1) it was a USD team that was #1 at the time, 2) pheasant season wasn't as a big of deal in the '70s and '80s due to low pheasant numbers, and 3) more out-of-state pheasant numbers now places more demand on hotel rooms and on services (people that might want to come to Brookings but can't get away due to the hunting opener).
If SDSU has to have a Hobo Day on the pheasant opener, than having a night game may be necessary in order to get attendance.
The largest crowd ever to see a football game of any kind in South Dakota came through the turnstiles on Hobo Day, Oct. 19, 1985, when 16,193 fans saw SDSU defeat the University of South Dakota 24-12. USD was undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation (NCAA Division II) at the time.

Hobo Day should be the last Saturday in Septmeber against USD - every year! As long as USD is D2 they travel to here. (PERIOD) Once they move to D1 then consider a home and home. When UDS is the home team rotate the game with other Dakota teams like USF, AUGIE, UND, and UMary. Their fans will travel and probably have friends and family in the SDSU community to help get big crowds and also help build neighborly relations with these schools. I'd rather have these folks liking the Jacks verses the Yotes, Sioux or Bison.
I'd would also like to see Idaho State, Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado come in. UNI would be a cool mathch-up, but Hobo Day should be a game the Jacks can win and send the fans off happy for the rest of the weekend's festivities.

Fat chance of the USD games happening they think they are like royalty since we moved up to D-1, they feel it needs to be a home and home or a no go. mmmmm the flawed politics of USD's athletic department.

With all due respect you seem to have "season opener" confused with "homecoming". I for one don't want to play a cup cake ever year for Hobo Day.

No, I didn't. Homecoming should be a conference game that means something.
And, the last weekend of September is not the "season opener". Hobo should be a Big Crowd day that is outside the "season opener" to draw big crowds out side the season opener and homecoming.

You do understand that Hobo Day IS homecoming, right? :-?
I've decided Lucky is posting covertly. Not really a SDSU fan, clearly pointed out that he didn't know Hobo Day was homecomeing. I'm done wasting time on posts like his.
