Many of the WIAC teams are better than most Pioneer League teams, but no matter what, you can't get around that they are D3.

      Re: 2007 Football Schedule

Getting Drake on the home schedule in the future wouldn't be a bad idea as a lil' "warm-up" game, but I wouldn't be eager to set up a three-game contract with them. Many D-2 (and even a handful of D-3) teams are better than the non-schollie D-1AA schools (who really don't belong in D1-AA) as Missouri-Rolla and UW-LaCrosse gave us better games than Valpo, who decided to quit scheduling scholarship teams after getting hammered in the Dakotas two years in a row.

Despite the competitve difference, facing the D-1AA non-schollie team typically looks better than the NAIA opponent, especially if it's a school we've never played or knew that it even existed. In other words. USF is probably the only NAIA school that SDSU could schedule without inciting a message board full of groans.....and that is even debatable......

        Re: 2007 Football Schedule

What have the efforts been like to play Augie and Northern State? The NCC schools are all looking for non-cons and if UM-Duluth is going to go to cedar Falls with only 28 scholarships I bet they'd make the trip to SDSU.

Not sure on NSU or Augie, I haven't heard anything. I wonder if they might have some "political problems" on scheduling other in state schools. I can't figure out what it would be, hopefully someone else knows something.

Northern is likely around 20 schollies (or less) and the game would probably be a bloodbath, like many NCC-NSIC tilts in recent years. SDSU played Augie a couple years ago for Hobo Day and it was a blowout. Of course, USD insists that SDSU ignores its classification staus and agree to a game in Verminville if they were to play in Brookings.......

I forgot about the Augie Hobo Day game. I hope we can keep our schedule with 1AA or above games. An occasional game wouldn't be too bad, but not an annual thing.

Opportunity lost: Drake just picked up a game with Illinois State on August 30th, 2007.

But they do recruit the hell out of the Chicagoland area.

We already have a game scheduled for the 30th.  It the first half of a home and home with Western Ill.  We are really only looking for one more game, probably a road game with another I-AA, would be my guess.

Looks like we need one more game, but I must say that looks like a heck of a schedule for the fall of '07!  8-)

                        Re: 2007 Football Schedule

We're probably looking for one home game (Sept. 8 and Oct. 13 are currently open), especially if Montana buys out of its trip to Brookings....we would likely be stuck scrambling for a crappy opponent at home or another away game.

The looming problem for 2007 is when do you schedule Hobo Day? Oct. 20 is the most logical date, BUT it's the pheasant opener, a date that would kill attendence (Fred would probably prefer to have that be a nite game so he can get his limit and then come back to Brookings for the game). Nov. 10 would likely be too late and Sept. 29 is probably too early......

                          Look at the positives:
                          A regional D1-AA opponent
                          Home Game
Possible 2 home - 1 away series to a larger metropolitan city than SDSU is used to playing in.  Could mean new recruiting territory.
SDSU is not up to full scholarship level and do not qualify for play-off yet so there are other options to consider.
The key component, is that they are D-I. A WIN AGAINST DRAKE STILL COUNTS TOWARD 7 again D-I opponents. A win against D-II, NAIA, D-III schools don't count. Granted, not much benefit in strength of schedule vs. I-AA or I-A only schedule. But better than non-D-I opponents. BTW, Drake is usually in the mix with Dayton and Uof San Diego for the Pioneer Conference championship. UC-Davis is playing that USD this year, we should consider Drake. Plus, playing a MoValley school in football may open door to other OOC games in OTHER sports (basketball, baseball, track, tennis). I'm looking very long-term now, but it would be wonderful to have an on-going relationship with a bunch of the Gateway/Mo Valley teams so that (WAY INTO) future conference changes bring Bunnies to the top as likely candidates for addition into the best, highest matching conference to SDSU.

I would vote for Cal Poly as they are a conference foe and the date lines up well. Pheasants will have to take a back seat to the Jacks.

Although the likelihood that Montana will buy out is there, I don't think we can count on that until we hear from them.  I would assume that the AD has some idea now of whether or not Montana will come in 07.  As far as Hobo Day, I would choose SFAUSTIN on Sept 29th.  I don't think it is too early at all, especially since school is usually starting a week earlier now.  That would 5 weeks into the fall semester, plus the weather would be more pleasant.  Cal-Poly would be a great game for Hobo Day too, but I would think they would draw pretty well anyway since a lot of people saw a great game with them last year for the Beef Bowl.  This way our attendance for 2007 would hopefully get a little boost - playing Montana, Texas St, SF Austin (good Hobo Day Crowd), Cal Poly, and NDSU - we should easily average 12,000.

So let me get this straight... Montana, who along with MT State has been proponents of us entering the Big Tease Conference, want's to BUY us out?

If they were such fans of us, wouldn't it make sense to honor their obligations and not leave us in the lurch?
